January 31, 2008Picks Of The Week – January 31, 2008
For those of you who may not be familiar with the GAMBLOG segment, it started at my old site when one of my friends and readers, Matt, approached me with the idea to write a weekly blog within my blog about his pick(s) of the week. I agreed that it seemed like a good idea, and so GAMBLOG was born. Now, I am bringing this feature over to the new site, so here we are with Matt’s picks. As always, should you choose to use these for any illegal purposes, you are doing so at your own risk. These picks are just for fun.

Well my perfect record is definitely on the line this week. This is the game of all games, (I could just see the kids from the Sandlot movie having a field day nicknaming the Superbowl) the game we’ve all been waiting 365 days for, or roughly 16,071 days and counting if you’re a fellow Browns fan.
This year the Superbowl features the undefeated New England Patriots and the suprising New York Giants. That’s right, it is another matchup of Brady vs Manning however this time it’s Eli instead of Peyton. Which means it’s a matchup of the two most nonchalant quarterbacks in the league. These guys could be at the opera or about to play in the Superbowl and you couldn’t tell the difference. That being said their play while under pressure has been drastically different throughout their respective careers. That is, until this year’s playoffs, where Eli has quieted most of his critics for now.
Truthfully I have no bold prediction for this game and therefore I’m going to make a calculated decision based on the following possibilities. Logically in any given game there are 4 outcomes; either team can win in a blowout, or either team could win in a close game. With the Giants getting 11.5 points, they win ATS in 3 of the 4 scenarios. The only concern obviously is the Patriots ability to blow any team out on any given Sunday. But the Superbowl rarely produces blowouts, right? Wrong, 23 of the 41 previous Superbowls have been decided by more than 11.5 points. You begin to see my dilemma. I’m going with the theory that the Patriots haven’t blown any one out in a while, and there is no such thing as being “due”.
I’m picking the Patriots to win the game, but rooting for the Giants. I say that now, but I will probably be rooting for whichever team is losing at any given point in the game. And then at the end, I will probably be rooting for the Patriots to make history by achieving the first ever undefeated season.
Official prediction:
New York
mjgreg’s current record ATS is 3-0

Well it didn’t go down like I thought it would, but nonetheless, taking the Giants and the points was the right call. Gamblog is 4-0!
MJGreg, you need to take that hot streak over to http://pregame.com. I’m certain you’d love the discussion forusm over there!
