February 8, 200802/09 Morning Minute: Who Is This Guy?
February 9, 2008I have to tip my hat to the IT department here at WaitingForNextYear, they know how to grab a good story! Check out this email from Pat Riley to Steve Kerr…
Steve-
First off, thanks again for handling your end of this trade with class and respect. I hope that Shaq finds the healing waters of some desert oasis and can lead you into the playoffs and beyond. We are thrilled with Marcus and Shawn, as is our fan base, and hopefully they will restore us into contention in the Eastern Conference again soon. (That really shouldn’t be all that difficult huh?)
The reason I’m writing is to ask a favor. See, I sort of forgot about something when we traded Shaq to you. You may remember reading about our December 19th game with Atlanta. With 51.9 seconds left to go in OT, Shaq picked up his 5th foul but the officials claimed he had fouled out and was not permitted to play the remainder of the game. We ended up losing that game, but won a protest and the game is scheduled to be resumed from the time that Shaq was given the foul. It is to be finished prior to our March 8th game against Atlanta. Perhaps you are beginning to understand the situation.
The rules state of course that no player who wasn’t on the roster at the beginning of that game (back in December) may play in the game. That means Marion and Banks will not be allowed to participate. It is further complicated since the one player that the dispute was about will be in Phoenix.
So here’s the favor I’m asking. Do you think it would be possible for us to borrow Shaq for the day? I checked the schedule, and you guys are off that day. On the 7th you host Utah, and then the 9th San Antonio comes in for a game, but the 8th is an off day. I can’t imagine you would hold a practice in between the two, so would you be willing to let Shaq suit up for us one last time? It would only be for a minute, literally. I wouldn’t ordinarily ask except wins have been pretty hard for us to come by lately, and it seems silly to follow through with this protest without the guy we protested should have been allowed to play.
Give it some thought and get back to me. Thanks Steve!
Pat
