Could Romeo Crennel Be Suspended?
February 7, 2008GAMBLOG Picks Of The Week
February 7, 2008A good friend of mine forwarded me a piece from today’s chat with ESPN’s Chad Ford (subscription required). Within it, Ford was apparently discussing the Cleveland Cavaliers and their current rank amongst the NBA as well as the East. And then he said this…
The Cavs are doing well in a bad conference. I still think they’re not in the same league as this year’s Celtics or Pistons and I think everyone in Cleveland knows that too. The problem is that they really don’t have the assets they need to pull off a big trade. Their best bet is to try to pawn off their $6.5 million in expiring contracts and perhaps Drew Gooden for a good player. But I’m not sure it will be enough. They need another star. Too bad they balked at a deal this summer that would’ve sent Gooden, Varejao (in a sign-and-trade) and some of their expiring contracts to Phoenix for Marion.
You read that right. Marion. As in Shawn Marion. The power forward, defensive powerhouse that typically is among league leader in steals and blocks every year, while putting up 20 points and 10 rebounds per night. That Marion.
While I understand that Cleveland needs a point guard more than anything, I have a feeling that we as fans are being led down this path to believe that Danny Ferry is actually trying to bring a top-notch player to this city. Making phone calls and low-balling just to make it look like you’re working isn’t going to cut it. I’m not sure how valid his efforts have been to bring Mike Miller to town, but now that Boston has acquired Kevin Garnett, LA traded for Pau Gasol and now Miami has acquired Shawn Marion, it isn’t looking good for Cleveland.
LeBron is saying the right things for now, with his thoughts that the Cavs will “be alright” even if they do not make a move, but if this Marion deal has any sort of truth to it, you’re going to have a ton of upset fans. Assuming that even matters…

Hmmm…someone wrote about this deal in the summer. Hmmmm, who could that have been…oh, wait…it was Halftime Adjustments…

I was unaware that a formal offer was made – I do recall playing around with the name, but just assumed that it was wishful thinking…
The trade in the halftime adjustments post is Hughes and Donyell for Marion. How on earth is that the same as what this post says? Give me a break
I still think giving up both Gooden and Varejao is just too much for this team to take. That’s the whole problem with this whole franchise. They’re so razor thin at every position that no matter what kind of trade they do, it cripples them. I’m still in the “the only way this team will eventually get better is by letting these bad contracts expire” camp. But we’ll see.
I completely agree. I don’t want the Cavs to make a move just to make a move, but I think the Cavs would have been fine with Marion, Jones and Marshall to play the 4 (and spell Z every once in a while).
I am definitely in the ‘wait until next year’ mode now. I don’t like the idea of Bibby or Kidd coming here just due to the fact that it would kill what small core the Cavs have. I would rather let bad deals expire and make better free agent choices (please Danny)
you didn’t read the whole thing mike-
“Good suggestion Pat, I was thinking we might have to give up Drew Gooden to get Shawn. In the trade I made work we gave Phoenix Gooden and Eric Snow. Word is that Snow might retire, and that would help the Suns with the luxury tax issue they are facing.- Rick”
Pat’s suggestion was Hughes, but I thought that Phoenix would neither want, nor trade for Hughes. My suggestion was Marshall instead of Varejao, and before the season began I thought Marshall had decent trade value, but the season has killed any value he had.
Not saying it was an offer on the table, but I did throw it out there when rumors of Marion’s availability were brought to light.
