Let The Experiment Begin
April 16, 2008More Trouble In Cincy
April 16, 2008I’ve been meaning to write about this for a couple days now. The fine folks over at Scouts Inc, the scouting section of ESPN, decided to do a “redraft” of the 2005 NFL Draft. First of all, these things are kind of dumb. As I always say, hindsight is always easier than foresight. That being said, though, these things are just meant to be for fun. And that’s fine. But take a look at what Scouts, Inc thinks the Browns should have done with their #3 overall pick in 2005.
“3. Cleveland Browns — OT Jammal Brown, Oklahoma
’05 team needs: QB, OT, NT, ILB, S, CB, DE, WR
Actual selection: WR Braylon Edwards, Michigan
It would be hard to argue against selecting Edwards, who was one of the top players in this class. However, we are looking back to 2005 and at that time the Browns had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL without current LT Joe Thomas. Based on the state of the offensive line back then, the Browns should not have passed on Brown, who is now an excellent starting left tackle.”
Really? Check out the photo above. That’s the replica of Braylon Edwards’ Pro Bowl jersey. In Scouts, Inc’s own rankings of WRs in the NFL recently, they ranked Braylon as the #7 WR overall in the NFL. Sure, Jammal Brown is a very good player and he did go to Pro Bowl in his 2nd season, but the Browns have Joe Thomas anyway, who went to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season. Granted, the point of their pick is that the Browns didn’t have Joe Thomas back then, but even taking that into consideration, and just knowing then what we know now about these players, I still have a hard time believing the Browns would take Jammal Brown over Braylon Edwards.

I should have added….it sure is funny to look back at team needs in 2005, and to see how few needs the Browns now have in comparison.
QB? Check.
OT? Check.
NT? Check.
ILB? Still a need
S? Decent, but not great
CB? Could use a little depth
DE? Check.
WR? Check.
The Browns are far from perfect, but boy are they a LOT better off in 2008 than they were in 2005.
Check out pick #10. Derek Anderson to the Lions. He has come a long way from the sixth round
Good point. I missed that one. Browns really got a steal when they got DA, no matter how much I don’t yet trust him.
woah Rock…we have a phe-nominal ILB in Jackson and Davis is durable. Now that we actually have a defensive tackle worth his salt we may actually see how good Jackson is. This is a man who led the ACC in tackles most of his college career.
I have no problems with Jackson. But Davis looked slow and ineffective all year last year. And there’s not a lot of depth there. It’s not the Browns’ most pressing need, but I think it is indeed still a need.
