Playing A Little “What If”
May 28, 2008Rafaels Take Turns Blowing Saves
May 28, 2008I apologize for breaking up this Cleveland Indians party today, but after this afternoon’s game, I need something else to talk about. Enter the Cleveland Browns.
I mentioned yesterday that the team had been trying out a veteran lineman to bolster what could be an injury-plagued guard slot. And while that’s all good, the main need continues to be the cornerback position.
Thanks to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, we have a list of what looks to be the best defensive free agents available. (Warning: What follows the “jump” is not pretty by any means.)
Cornerbacks:
Nnamdi Asomugha (franchise player)
Ty Law
Jerametrius Butler
Andre Dyson
Kenny Wright
Chad Scott
Duane Starks
Kiwaukee Thomas
Fred Thomas
Roc Alexander
Dexter Wynn
Chidi Iwuoma
Wow, that wasn’t too fun, huh? So, we have Ty Law (who has already been called “too expensive”), and a guy that would demand a handful of draft picks to get in a trade from Oakland. Even if we were to trade for Asomugha, he’s due nearly $10 million next season.
So where does that leave us? I hate to use the cliché “rock and a hard place,” but this, my friends, is just that. Phil Savage will have to roll the dice on someone, or just really hope that one of those undrafted players pans out. We’re dangerously thin at cornerback, and will be banking on two guys without a lot of experience.
Not good for a team looking to step things up on the defensive side of the ball.

At least we are deep at the safety position, so we can use guys like Brodney Pool as a nickel back in a pinch and then have Mike Adams take over at FS, and maybe Gary Baxter can….oh nevermind I won’t even bother finishing that thought. But Cousins was a good pickup, and maybe if we get one of those guys he can be our 4th guy and then…well then things aren’t terrible so long as Mcdonald and Wright stay healthy and keep improving
We havent had a premier cornerback in recent years and the whole idea of beefing up the d-line was allow a “lesser” cornerback be able to be ok back there.
I dont expect Savage to do anything drastic but I wouldnt be suprised to see us roll the dice with an undrafted guy to fill some depth.
Thanks for breaking up the Indians non-sense. The funny thing about those corners is #5 on the list. Didn’t we just cut him? There’s another round of cuts coming sometime in the near future. Savage has got to be praying someone decent gets dumped and they can make a move quick. Philly is still overloaded at CB too, but neither one of those guys is going to be cheap.
Wow… I can’t say I’m surprised that the list is that thin, but I still think Savage will make some sort of move to get some young kid with a little experience. I’ve heard Youbouty which would be good. He’s the kind of player I’d be looking at. Young, relatively inexpensive and has a (Cliche ahead!) “higher ceiling” than older players.
whered you hear about Youboty? 🙂

This looks like the exact same list we’ll see in the free agents list when the new Madden game comes out.
Translation: Not a good sign.
I think we are going to be fine.
If Corey Williams and Shaun Rodgers play to their ability and get pressure on the QB … (and stop the run) … You’ve already posted about the LB corps and we know we are fine at safety.
The Cornerbacks we have on this roster are capable of playing nicely in this system.
Easy E is solid and will only get better in time, and I’m not sure about you guys but Brandon McDonald became my favorite DB on our team last year towards the end of the year. If he can continue that intensity and knack for the ball I think can do his job in this defense.
Now I’m not saying Phil should sit on his hands, we do need some depth… behind the guys we have.. but I see no reason to mortgage the future to get a top notch CB when we have two solid guys playing the corner already.
