Gems From the Net…
May 22, 2008Trade Machine Fun
May 22, 2008It wasn’t all too long ago that the Cavaliers were hot on the trail of former Ohio State star Michael Redd. After a little deliberation, Redd decided that he would like to stay in Milwaukee, where he could knock down consistent 20-point games. Unfortunately, all of that scoring that Redd has been able to provide has the Bucks drafting in the lottery for the second straight season.
Last season, the Bucks re-signed point guard Mo Williams to a fairly large deal. Given that they selected Yi Jianlian last season and will likely select another solid rookie, it doesn’t appear that Milwaukee will be vying for a championship for the 2008-09 season. Thus, General Manager John Hammond is considering looking for another team to take on the aforementioned Redd and the $33 million that he will be due over the next two seasons.
The NBA Draft Lottery is history and the selection order for the 2008 draft is set — for now.
Rest assured, there are going to be a slew of changes before the June 26th draft. Several teams have already been fervorishly working the phones, laying the groundwork for potential trades. One of those teams is the Milwaukee Bucks. […] Redd is unquestionably the Bucks’ best player, the one who would bring back the most in a trade.
Now, the question is: Would we still like the services of one Michael Redd? Rest assured, had he been on this roster over the past season, there would have been at least one more win for the Cavaliers given Redd’s notorious buzzer-beater on February 26th.
Redd is a prolific scorer, excellent three-point shooter, and has been a supurb free-throw shooter throughout his entire career. For those that are all about the PER, Redd boasts a rating of 18.90 – comparatively better than every player on the Cavaliers, save LeBron James (29.23) and Zydrunas Ilgauskas (18.76). In fact, he’s almost as “efficient” as Wally Szczerbiak (13.99) and Sasha Pavlovic (7.28) combined. In fact, adding Redd to the Cavaliers would provide us with our fourth player with a PER above league average.
Dan Labbe of the Plain Dealer has already started his campaign of “Paint the Town Redd,” and has many fans behind him. However, with the amount of money that Redd is due over the next couple of years, Danny Ferry and company will have to be certain that this is the guy that they want. Remember, when Redd signed with Milwaukee, Ferry’s move was to add Larry Hughes, Damon Jones and Donyell Marshall – two players that are no longer with the team, and one that may already have one foot out of the door. Three seasons later, are we willing to give it another crack? A better question is: Should we?

That is a huge chunk of cash to put into one player, but I really like Redd’s ability. I would still like to see a great PF in here more than redd, but I am not really sure that is an option.
I am looking for more of a post player at the moment, but like MacNip said, i dont see that happening soon in the future. Though I would really like Redd. We would only be paying him a little over 17 million this year. I have no problem with us trading our 1st round pick and maybe 2 expiring contracts to get him. He only has minor defensive issues, but under Mike Brown, I’m sure that can be worked out. I’m all for pursuing Michael Redd
Redd might put up all star numbers playing next to Lebron, but I think he was more than just minor defensive issues, he is a liability on defense. I’d rather get Shawn Marion, who not necessarily available, is what I would like to see
Redd can’t possibly be worse on defense than Wally, and Brown managed to convice ‘World to put up a pretty good fight against Ray Allen. I would not be worried about the defensive end of this deal.
To me, this is a no-brainer. Redd was the right guy 3 years ago, and continues to be the right guy to play next to LeBron. Not only someone who can convert on most of the open looks that LeBron will provide him with, a guy who will spread the floor and relieve some congestion in the lane for LeBron’s driving ability, but also a guy who can put the ball in the hoop while LeBron gets a rest from time to time. That’s a player that hasn’t existed on the Cavs since Ricky Davis was shooting at his own hoop. This is like hitting the reset button…a couple years too late, but we get the right guy and start to forget that the Larry Hughes era ever happened. Do it, now. This immediately changes the face of the Eastern Conference…again.
I’ve watched him play defense closely….trust me its really bad. But a good system might be able to fix that, he usually has to guard an opponents best player and maybe if he doesn’t have to do that he will be more effective
[…] is campaigning hard to bring Michael Redd to Cleveland. In response, WaitingForNextYear debates whether the Cavs should go after Redd. While Cleveland fans might prefer a big-time post-scorer, they’re unlikely to find any who are […]
