Yeah, let’s not forget that the success of the Marlins came at our expense! Likewise the immediate success of the Jaguars and Panthers made NFL owners change some of the expansion rules, making life tougher on the Browns. Then again, drafting losers didn’t help either.

“Imminent danger of losing LeBron James in a couple of years”?
(Just assume I bothered to add the obvious Inigo Montoya quote here)
I thought that would be a hit…
Maybe ’cause I’m not from Cleveland, but I hadn’t really noticed that. It is pretty interesting that the Marlins & D’backs both won all their titles, starting with the Indians loss to Florida in ’97 and the Indians have never even been back for a second shot. Even the White Sox and Red Sox have ended their title droughts, and the Cubs appear to be next! At least the Indians aren’t acting like it’s the 1970’s or 80’s. They’ve been competitive.
The NFL puts a ton of pressure on expansion teams to draft well in their first few years and if they don’t, you get the Browns and the Texans. NFL expansion teams get the rejects of every other team in the league and then get their high draft picks, and thats it. Both the Browns and Texans used their first picks on QB’s that turned out to be busts and that cost both teams a lot of money and 3 wasted years of trying to turn a bad QB into a winner. Whenever a team uses a first round pick on a QB and he doesn’t pan out, that team has to start over and it takes years to recover. Expansion teams absolutely have to draft well since they have no room for error, and when your the Browns and you fail to hit on any of your top 3 picks in your first 3 years of existence (how can that happen???), you are screwed. That is a lot of time and money going into failures. That goes for the NBA too, the Bobcats haven’t really gotten anything from their lottery picks and look where they are.
When Carolina and Jacksonville came into the league it was a little easier. Carolina was 12-4 their second season. Jacksonville made it to the conference championship game in their second or third year.
Funny how he doesn’t mention the Texans, Raptors, or the Grizzlies…
