Franklin Gutierrez Goes Lead-Off?

Tag, You’re In.

With Grady Sizemore apparently getting the day off, Franklin Gutierrez is in Grady’s spot – both in center field and in the lead-off role.  Yes, Gutierrez, the man with a .260 on-base percentage.  Thankfully, he led the game off with a home run off of Scott Kazmir.*  We’ve been looking for a lead-off guy for a while now despite Grady’s successes at the top.  I really doubt that Franklin is the answer there, but at least he capitalized on the [one-day] opportunity.

Rick’s buddy Ryan Garko left the game with a leg injury in the third inning.  See what happens when he runs out plays?  He was replaced by Rick’s other buddy Andy Marte who has since gone 2-for-2 with a two-run double.  Karma?  Perhaps.  But I’ll take it.

*He’s since grounded out twice

Leg injury? Is that what they’re calling it? He better have a leg injury…

F-Gut doesn’t care about your menial stats like “batting average” and “on base percentage”.

The D-Rays are making a strong case for the AL East crown. Too bad this wasn’t 2007 and they were in the Jake/Prog for a do-or-die game 5. We’re ruining them so far on the season, and this is our last series against ‘em. 5-1? that’ll win you a shot at the World Series.

what an awful 6-run, zero out meltdown by the bullpen.

Perez fans FOUR guys in two innings. Kobayashi gives up three earned with NO innings.

Is there any further discussion about this?

Sheesh, I go into a meeting with the Tribe up 6-4, and when I come back I check the play-by-play…

    Bottom 9th: Tampa Bay
    - E. Mujica relieved R. Perez
    - J. Bartlett doubled to deep left
    - E. Hinske doubled to deep right, J. Bartlett scored
    - G. Gross homered to deep right, E. Hinske scored
    - M. Kobayashi relieved E. Mujica
    - A. Iwamura singled to first
    - B. Zobrist walked, A. Iwamura to second
    - C. Pena homered to deep center, A. Iwamura and B. Zobrist scored

    …six batters, twenty-four bases? Seriously?

    Twenty-seven hours until preseason football…

I understand that a three-inning save would have been a rarity, but why not keep Perez in? His pitch count was not unusually high, he was excellent, and although Wedge wants Perez’s role to be as a setup man, who’s he setting up for? We’ve fully admitted that we have no closer among us and need to get one via free agency. So why not go with a guy who’s pitching really well at the moment, rather than take a chance on Mujica? (And before someone says it: I would NOT think Wedge to be a genius if the choice worked out in our favor…I’d think him lucky that Mujica had a good outing).
