Ohio State Football: SI Cover Jinx?

I’m typically not one to harp on the superstitions of the whole SI cover.  Madden cover, sure.  Just ask Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb.  But SI?  Not at all.  The Browns’ Jamal Lewis made the cover last year and the Browns put up one of the more memorable seasons in recent history.  But how often does the #2 team make the cover, with one, three and four being on the inside flap?  Not that I’m complaning…

I am sure the anti-OSU people out there will love this, and that SEC fans will feel disrespected since Georgia andFlorida got snubbed.  One thing that I do give SI credit for is the fact that they put Todd Boeckman on the cover, and not Terrelle Pryor.  Pryor has received a ton of attention over the last year, and for them to ensure that the actual starter was front and center was a great move.  It’s about this year given all of the seniors that came back for one more run.

Twenty-four days…

(Note: Rick pointed out that these covers may be regional, and depending on where the issue hits news stands decides the true cover.  Somehow, I still feel that this wouldn’t stop SEC fans from complaining…)

    Per SI, the cover is a regional thing. The OSU players are only on the cover in the midwest, so the SEC honks will never know-

    I want to know if the other teams are sitting down on the cover in their region…

    Also, when you put 5 teams on the cover I think it kind of negates the cover jinx.

    I don’t like the move of having Boeckman on the cover at all. The other 2 guys in that picture are going to be top 10 (possibly 5) picks in this years NFL draft, Boeckman is going to be day 2 if not a free agent signing. There are way better impact players on this team, Malcom Jenkins and Robiski come to mind.

    Boeckman is alot like Craig Krenzel in my opinion, a mediocre quarterback who will probably win a championship because of the incredible defense and outstanding offensive talent around him. All he has to do is not mess up enough to lose a game, and even if he gets to that point the golden messiah of OSU football (based on media speculation) is waiting on the sidelines for his chance to step up.

    Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t have liked Pryor being on the cover either, but I think Boeckman was a poor choice.

    Excellent detective work, Wendigo.

    Rich Rod scheduled a practice during the photoshoot – that’s why UM didn’t make the cover. Wait, what?

    Hoy-
    2 things, first I don’t think OSU will win a championship if Boeckman doesn’t improve. Second, all the pictures feature the QB. I’m sure they wanted some continuity.

    I’m an SEC fan and I’m not complaining
    i know your joking but, I think that Ohio State does deserve to be on the cover above Florida, since your team is conceived to be better
    and Georgia is not nearly as good as everyone thinks. They’ll lose in week 3. So Ohio State can have the cover :)

    If I had a nickel for everytime I’ve heard someone tell me how average Krenzel was…. especially from people with the last name Hoy. Makes me wonder if it’s the same guy.

    Regardless, right choice of QBs on the cover. Pyror will get his chance.

    Rick, I agree I think for us to win we need Boeckman to improve.

    Graham, living in SEC turf, I hear about the teams alot as fans try to prove why their team is better then the bucks. Georgia is a tad overranked. I don’t believe they will hold up in the top 5 through the halfway mark of the season. Florida comes in with alot of potential again this year, but an injury to Tebow could rip and dreams right out from under them as their offense is designed around him almost to the point where without his scramble and bootleg plays, coverage would lock in.

    Hoy,

    If I recall correctly, Mel Kiper had Boeckman rated as the top Junior QB prospect in the 2008 draft. I believe Kiper projected him to go in the 2nd round if he would have entered the draft.

  • Hoy

    @ Brianrut
    Kiper can project whatever he wants, I don’t think theres anyway he goes on day 1. Krenzel still went in round 5 after winning a national championship, and Boeckman doesn’t seem to be any better.

    @Rick
    He may improve, especially with everyone waiting for him to mess up and start calling for Pryor, that may very well drive him to improve.

    However I think we can win a championship even if he plays about as well as he did last year, maybe he could learn to not pull the trigger on the deep ball so much or get a bit more arm strength.

    @Cjz
    dutch?

    Kiper draft expertise is a bit iffy. Not saying I could do much better but once he gets outta the top 30 picks or so his prediction average falls considerably.

    @Hoy,
    I knew that was you with the Krenzel line. 500 miles 4 states and a few years since we’ve talked football. Good to see we’re trolling the same amazing sports coverage. (see what I did there WFNY guys) Email me hoy, cjzethof@gmail

    Leadership…Krenzel> Boeckman
    NFL Measurables…Boeckman> Krenzel

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Scott

    But in Krenzel’s defense, he was a molecular genetics major (as the broadasters made that known EVERY week). No one ever said that would get you a passer rating over 55…

  • Cjz

    Excellent point Scott. Now that I look back, maybe the broadcaster were doing that so when in 6-7 years, we could have this conversation and not worry about Krenzel starving on the street.

    Also wasn’t Troy Smith Jr projected first round the year before he entered the league? He ended up as what? A 7th round pick?

    There is no truth to the SI cover jinx.

    Go Bucks!
