Breaking Point?
October 20, 2008The Airing Of Grievances
October 20, 2008But the BCS rankings are out, and Ohio State is fifth (FIFTH!) in the computer poll. The fact that Penn State is seventh is a bit odd, but to be ninth overall at this point in the season is not bad. The Nation will obviously be pulling for Penn State this weekend just so Ohio State can’t screw things up again; and I can see their point. Though, part of me wants to believe that this team is different than that of the past two years…But I digress.
Just to point out some more wrinkles in the current rankings, Texas is obviously atop the list. However, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are still remaining on their schedule and both happen to be in the top 10.
It truly looks like if Ohio State can beat PSU this week, there are only a couple more chips that need to fall for the Buckeyes to move further up the rankings. Of course, whether or not they deserve to is a total different argument.

What’s the difference between the Computer Rankings and the BCS Rankings?
The computer ranking is a portion of the overall rankings.
Ohio State shouldn’t have to take flack for last year’s game. Like Dante in Clerks, they weren’t even supposed to be there that day. Ohio State didn’t politic their way into the National Championship. Nobody got ripped off. Ohio State just sat there as everyone in front of them CHOKED it all away. Yet again, people just get mad at Ohio State rather than the teams that were unable to take care of their business in the weeks leading up to the big selection process.
Right now there are 8 teams that are able to stake a claim to the title game. Just don’t lose and it probably won’t be a problem.
I don’t appreciate your ruse, ma’am.
My what?
Your ruse. Your cunning attempt to trick me…
One, two, three, four, FIF!
YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO RENT HERE ANYMORE!!
No chance the human polls put the Bucks high enough to make the NC game. 30 point blow out wins would not convince the human polls. Sad, but true.
Oh and …
It’s important to have a job that makes a difference, boys. That’s why I manually masturbate caged animals for artificial insemination.
and…
My friend here is trying to convince me that any independent contractors who were working on the uncompleted Death Star, were innocent victims when they were destroyed by the Rebels.
I’m a little hard-pressed to understand how this works. People get mad at tOSU for backing into games, but Southern Cal loses to unranked Oregon State and lands at #5, in front of UGA who lost to the #2 ranked team in the country? I guess that makes sense.
It would take 2 losses by every BCS conference team to get OSU into the title game, not because they arent good enough, but because of the national perception.
Doug Lesmires has a good article on the BCS standings and USC’s human poll rankings. How do they get ranked higher than an undefeated Oklahoma St. team that beat number two Missouri on the road?
If Ohio beats Penn St. things will start to get crazy.
I try not to worry about it. People will hate no matter what. We put ourselves in this place by not showing up at USC. I’m happy with the Rose Bowl if we win out. Only problem I would have is if we actually deserve the NC (better record than other teams) and dont get in, then I will sh*t a brick. I kind of expect something like that to happen, so I’m trying to prevent the heart attack now by not caring.
The PSU/OSU is a lose/lose situation for both teams.
If PSU wins, OSU wasn’t a good team in the first place and they were already exposed by USC.
If OSU wins, PSU was totally over-rated and would not have been undefeated if they played anyone out of conference.
The rest of the nation can eat a big fat crap sandwich about this. With all the Lakers, BoSox, Yankees, Cubs, USC, UT, OKLA, Celtics, Brett Favre crap that gets shoved in my face, the rest of the nation can deal with the Buckeyes playing in another title game.
Go Bucks, just keep taking care of business and let the rest of the nation do all the talking, whining, and losing.
Does anyone here think that OSU is one of the two best teams in the country? After playing just 2 good games all year (Minnesota and MSU)? I sure don’t. I am actually scared of the prospect of making the Rose Bowl, because that means that we might have to play USC again. Sure, with Beanie and Pryor we are a different team, but do they prevent USC from scoring 35? No, and USC would have easily scored more if they wanted too. I hope OSU beats Penn St and makes the Rose Bowl and all that, but they haven’t shown that they are even close to one of the 2 best teams in the country
Ricky, if you are scared then go hide in the corner. I’m not scared of OSU playing USC again, this time with Pryor and Beanie playing the whole game. There will be no gift pick 6’s in this game. There will be no Maurice Wells running straight into his o-line for no gain. OSU is a completely different team now.
A wise man once said, “To be the best, you have to beat the best… WHOO” – we’re a national program and we take all oncomers…
What are you guys talking about? The big 10 is terrible this year, and if Penn State does not win the big 10 becuase they lose to Ohio State this weekend, that means that the “best” team in the big 10 lost to the best team in the pac 10 35-3! That would be horrible for the conference.
Ohio State is turning into the Washington Generals of the bowl season. What major conference team will beat up on them this year?
I also think the major cause of poor bowl performance by big 10 teams is the long layoff between the last big 10 game and the bowl game. Other conferences have more conference play or a championship game, and seem to come into the bowls much less flat than big 10 teams.
