Kellen Winslow Had Staph, Wanted Trade

Well, apparently it was not swollen testicles after all?  In a post-game interview with WKYC following yesterday’s loss to the Washington Redskins, tight end Kellen Winslow confirmed that he did in fact have another bout with staph infection.

Last week, the team (mostly Romeo Crennel) claimed that it was in fact Winslow that wanted to keep the situation under wraps when it was actually the team’s decision.  In what turned out to be a pretty emotional interview, Winslow voiced his displeasure with general manager Phil Savage and his lack of contact during the recent hospitalization.  Winslow then went on as much to say that he considered requesting a trade before this week’s deadline.

With the recent rumors that the Eagles were interested in his services, coupled with the emotion that he was feeling while hospitalized and then losing the way that the Browns did, it comes as no surprise that the interview was ended by a teammate that overheard what he was saying; obviously, just to play it safe as we have all seen what Kellen can do with an open microphone.

Another bout with staph for the Browns?  All-Pro tight end requesting a trade?  Upsetting loss?  It’s bound to be a rough week in Berea, Ohio.

    Good, get rid of him. While you’re at it, get rid of Braylon and Andre Davis too. This team is full of guys who are overpaid. Steve Heiden has busted his a$$ the whole time we’ve had him, only to be on the bench because of the self-proclaimed “soldier” who is the biggest crybaby ever.

    Start Quinn, get some humble yet qualified players, and let’s win some games.

    For crying outloud.

    It is time to bring in Quinn. After seeing the tiff between DA and Vickers, I think that was a microcosm of how the players feel. They are not behind DA. He has lost them. You would NEVER see a player push away Manning, Brady, Favre, or Romo. When they speak, people listen. I think Quinn has held the clipboard long enough. Let’s see what the kid can do. Can’t be any worse than Anderson.

    This proves that the rumors were true…. Kellen Winslow does have a gigantic set of balls.

    After the Browns honored their contract after his stupid motorcycle accident and continued to pay and support him – he has no right to demand a trade any time soon.

    I’d never ever get rid of Winslow, hes one of the bright spots on our team. He plays hard every down. Just because he gets fking emotional after a loss and says something dumb (ie wanting to be traded) in the heat of the moment should NOT negate his spectacular ability on the feild. If every city turned thier back on a superstar who said they wanted to be traded then professional sports would be a revolving carosel (koby, tony g, manny ??). I know deep down hes just angry at how the situation was handled and how the team performed.

    LOL, yeah, it was out of sweet charity that the Browns kept their contract with K2 after the accident, not the fact that he’s an all-world talent that could help the team. Plus, they didn’t “honor” their contract, they reclaimed a huge chunk of his contract. But regardless, you think the team would wait for a 7th round pick to get better like this out of the sweetness of their kind heart? Not a chance.

    And how can ANYONE call K2 a “crybaby”???? This guy has played through more injuries and more pain than anyone else, all to help this pathetic organization that refuses to try ANYTHING to help itself. Winslow is mad at the team? GOOD. I am, too. At least SOMEBODY is willing to admit that things are screwed up on this team.

    and westside tim, i think andre davis took a pay cut at the beginning of the season and its assumed that this will be his last. if thats any consolation for you…

    I think some of you are being really short sighted and unfair.

    First off, nobody can question Kellens heart. NOBODY. He put his body on the line plenty last year. Played hurt, and still played hard. NOBODY was talking this “get rid of him” crap, when he fought his way to a pro bowl season.

    Now, after being the 476th victim of staph in this organization, and feeling shunned by his GM (and probably watching the rest of the guys play with no heart or intensity) he’s frustrated, and the first thing you do as a fan is attack him.

    You ever wonder why superstars dont stay in Cleveland? Ineptitude from management, and ridiculous fan attitudes probably contribute a great deal to it. I understand the C-Town inferiority complex, but you dont attack the one guy who gives 100% on a team full of marshmellows.

    Wherever K2 goes, if he goes… I’ll be rooting for him.

    I think people should look at what K2 actually said, and not jump to their own conclusions:

    “Winslow said he plans to make a statement through his publicists Monday. He also reiterated to ESPN.com Sunday night that this is strictly a disagreement with upper management — not anyone else — with the way the Browns mismanaged a serious health issue.

    “I love my teammates and I love my coaches, but I disagree with the front office with how they’ve handle this,” Winslow said. “I’m going to play for the Cleveland Browns regardless because I love playing here. I’m not going to let anyone take the love of the game away from me. I’m going to keep playing like I’ve been playing, which is hard every down.”"

    Thanks for the quotes, Rock. He totally came to the support of his teammates in his KYC interview, stating that it was a top-down issue.

    I’m not sure what needs to happen around here for the staph to warrant some sort of action. It is pretty outrageous at this point…

    Even with the swollen bulls-eyes DA still overthrew him by a good ten yards. For all the bad things that happened yesterday if we even get adequate QB play we win that game. Anderson was just awful.

    And honestly, can we put a hearing aid in DA’s helmet? I haven’t read one thing from any other team’s QB about not being able to hear the plays.

    On the Staph thing, and maybe I am stating the obvious, but this has to be ridiculous. Is there someway to completely irradiate the stadium? Like a big microwave? I kid….but seriously something must be done.

    As for Winslow’s comments, one thing is apprent, this year’s season and its faults rest squarely on the coaching and manger’s shoulders. What kind of team has players getting in alteractions in front of 91,000 opposing team fans? A poorly coached and managed one. Granted, there is no reason the players should’ve done that, but frustration happens, and its the coach’s responsibility to cool that stuff down. Vicker’s didn’t suddenly snap on the field, that stuff builds up. Fire Crennel, put Savage on notice….this is unacceptable.

    I’ll be anyone on here that if Winslow does go to another team with at least a decent quarterback he will tear it up. If he went to Philly, holy cow his numbers would be crazy.

    Theory 1 – Winslow is ticked that his numbers are down. It’s tough to get big free agent money, if you don’t do anything on the field. DA is not helping Winslow get his $$$$.

    Theory 2 – Winslow is ticked that DA is inconsistent and the team is losing.

    Theory 3 – Winslow is ticked that he keeps get staph infections.

    I think it’s 2 parts Theory 1 mixed with 1 part Theory 2 and a sprinkling of Theory 3.

    I agree with Victory (well, not the jump in Lake Erie part….but the rest) and CJG. I will never ever understand people’s problem with K2. He said one stupid thing in college, and now, 6 years later or whatever, even his own so called “fans” have never given him a chance. Yes, the motorcycle accident was dumb. He knows that. Have you ever heard him talk about it? He deeply regrets it, and he’s paid dearly for it. But it isn’t it time we move on from that? Why are people so angry at one of the only 2 or 3 skill position players who gives 100% of his heart on the field? I just don’t get it, and I suppose I never will.

    Dont you think that maybe part of his frustration stems from a lack of a new contract this past off-season? I think thats the best way a GM can “show his appreciation.” Instead of a new contract he got more competition with Rucker now sitting in the wings.

    I think most NFL teams know what K2 is capable of. DA isnt hurting Winslow’s payday that much.

    Well, I think Winslow’s right that he’s worth as much as any other TE is now, but he signed the current contract he’s got. He put himself in that position. I know he wants a new contract, and the NFL is the one sport I don’t mind players asking for their contracts to be re-worked, because the NFL is the one sport that doesn’t guarantee your contracts. The NFL teams can cut you is you don’t perform, and they do this all the time. So if a player has 3 great seasons in a row, and wants to restructure his contract, I don’t mind that.

    But, in my opinion, I think this about so much more than money. I’m not saying I’m right, it’s just my opinion.

    This Mary Kay Cabot interview is fascinating. I truly wonder why staph infections are so much more rampant in Cleveland than elsewhere? Is it really just bad luck?

    Nah rockking you right on the money lol. Its about savage it seems. Winslow would start for any team in the nfl except probably dallas and san diego. Gm’s know what k2 can do. Btw i love his i’ma f’n soldier comments when in college. Pryor gonna be the same way and are you guys gonna hate him also?

    I can see his frustrations…for over a week he has probably recieved a lot ribbing from other players and such for all the embarrassing internet testicles stuff and he couldn’t do anything about it b/c the Browns wanted the staph to be on the “hush hush.” Then he has to deal with another week of bad D.A. on the road in a game in which the Browns could have won handily with a more competent QB.

    Seriously, couldn’t Savage at least have sent a gift basket or flowers to the hospital? The GM is supposed to handle ALL of his responsibilities, which include PR and acting like a proper head of an organization.

    Since Savage’s drafts have consistently been so abysmal is it too much to expect him to show decency to a hospitalized team leader?

    I’d like to hear what Savage has to say about it. I know there’s a lot people saying Winslow shouldn’t expect the GM to call him while he’s in the hospital, and I can see that point of view, but man, I gotta tell you, if I were the GM of a team, and my star TE and the best football player on my team was lying in a hospital bed with his 2nd staph infection and was being asked to keep it quiet, I’m pretty sure I would have picked up the phone, given him a call, and checked up on him to see how he was doing. It just seems like common sense.

    The staph matter makes a mockery of the Browns. This is something that should not be happening under any circumstances and the players have a right to be angry.

    The staph problem obviously lies somewhere at the Browns’ facilities. The Cavs or Indians don’t get staph infections. Other NFL teams don’t get them. Insanity is doing something over and over again knowing it doesn’t work. Hence, the Browns’ decisions.

    wow, this is why i effing hate being a cleveland fan sometimes…because i get compared to some of you idiots making comments above. K2 is, at worst, the 2nd best player on our team, and yet because he’s unhappy that he got a life-threatening infection, we should just get rid of him. it makes sense…i mean, then all of you complainers will have something to bitch about next year when we don’t have have an absolute STAR at TE.

    Rock, i know from talking to you that K2 is prolly your favorite brown, which i’m coming close to agreeing with you about. i give you credit for “leading” me in that direction..lol. i also give you credit for being able to consistantly filter through the S%$# that always gets put on your site from stupid readers and fans……..

    The more I read about this, the more I get the impression that the Browns have a scheming organization that keeps things too close to the vest.

    seriously what is happening to this team? too many fights going on between team mates, too many undisclosed informatin about players, and way too much BS going on the field. Who’s gonna want o play for this team if this is whats going on in the media? no one thats who.

    On the flip side i’ll be at the jax game this weekend hopefully seeing the team that wooped on Dallas… i pray.

    This team has a history with Staph and it was not clearly ever taken care of by the Browns. With the many years we have seen Staph infections riddle the players, why has this not ever been more of an issue than keeping the players healthy? Win first, health second. Phil, KMA!
    Go Phil Savage, and take Romeo with you, with no regard to either of you. This team can do much better without either of you, period!
