A Little Help From Our Friends…
October 24, 2008Open Thread: Penn State at Ohio State
October 25, 2008The Cavs won their final preseason game in convincing fashion, though it seemed Washington sent the Generals instead of the Wizards. Cavs 107- Washington 80.
It was WFNY night at the Shott in Buckeye land, as Dan (far left), Scott (middle) and myself (right) each brought our wives to get our first live look at Mo Williams and the new look Cavs. It was a good evening for the Wine and Gold.
James had 26, and Williams added 15 as the Cavs offense looked sharp (yes, I just typed that.) Passes found the open man, and the Cavs played unselfish ball. The more I see a starting back court of Mo and Delonte, the more I like it. Last year at this time the Cavs were starting Larry Hughes at the point, with little backing him up. Friday night the Cavs had two legit point guards in the starting 5. Very nice indeed. Lebron was able to move without the ball, and made some great passes himself. Norman Dale would have been proud of this team.
There were a few other ‘interesting line-ups’ as we put it. Lebron, Mo, Delonte, Wally and Ben Wallace were on the floor for an extended period of time. Lebron was playing the four, and even posted up on one posession. (He quickly passed out of it to an open shooter in case you were wondering.) The Wizards were also in a small line-up, and so it wasn’t a huge mis-match. Gibson, Wally, Andy, Lorenzen and Sasha made up another strange line-up that played a lot more minutes than I figured together. It is not a line-up that the WFNY crew would approve of for any length of time.
Other high points-
With 9 seconds left in the first half, the Cavs called a time out to practice an ‘end of half’ play. Scott and I wondered out loud if it was going to be the Lebron dribble, dribble, dribble shoot play we have come to know so well. Well, Lebron got the ball, but found an open Zydrunas Ilgauskas cutting to the basket for an easy duece. Nice.
Kelly (my wife) came to the conclusion that Delonte West looks a little like Mr. Tumnus from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It has to do with the hair/beard combo.
Dan ran into Danny Ferry in the hall. Photo to prove it.
Unfortunately, after many had started to head home, a grusome accident occurred when a Cavs ‘Scream Team’ member was performing a stunt and landed terribly on his head and face. Play was stopped for quite a while as medical teams attended to the young man. Both teams were visibly shaken and even gathered together for prayer. A much different scene than the playoffs last year. GM Danny Ferry surfaced in the section next to us and looked very distraught over the accident.
WFNY sends our thoughts and prayers to the young man.
It was a good night, hopefully it was a sign of good things to come for the Cavs!

Yea i watched it on tv. Mo looks very fast. It was good to not see dribble dribble dribble hoist lol. Hickson is a idiot btw being late lol. I also noticed gibson is bad on defense and lebron is a savage on defense. Lebron gonna be on college gameday tomorrow so watch it! Go buckeye’s!
Caught a bit of the game on TV, but only about the first 7 minutes (on in the background at the bar). Only really saw that the cavs played well early.
Can’t wait for tuesday and the season to start.
The thing I liked most was the difference in attitude. The Cavs weren’t only running on steals and obvious transition plays. Mo pushes the ball almost all the time on misses when he can, and even with Z on the floor it works. I stand corrected from the earlier comments I made about this team not being able to “run”.
If LeBron can play without the ball more, he’s going to be deadly.
We all know this, but it bears worth repeating. Last year we had two contract holdouts, James got back from a grueling summer schedule, and we had larry hughes. Bad…
This year we have help for James, a relatively peaceful and cooperative training camp and preseason, and James had some rest (I think) since winning a Gold Medal. I look forward to a fast start to the season.
GO CAVS!
I thought the offense looked good last night. More movement, better passing…even Andy and Big Ben got some easy buckets. Looking forward to Tuesday fo see what happens.
I watched every minute of the game. Mo never stops moving when he doesn’t have the ball. It was good to see somebody not staring at lebron with they mouth wide open when he had the ball. One thing that is known is that wally will not be starting cuz he shoots way too much. We already have mo bron and z that need to get shots over wally. We gonna be gooooood this year
I was at the game too. I thought the Cavs looked really good and the more I watch Mo Williams the more I like him. I also like Mo and Delonte together. I think LeBron is going to be even more dominating this year than last year, if thats possible. And if Ben Wallace can play more like he did with the Pistons than the Bulls/Cavs then the sky is the limit for this team. Also, arguably the two most important pieces to this team, other than lebron of coarse, is Wally and Eric Snow. Come the trading deadline, they represent 20 million in expiring contracts. This will be huge in trying to pick up a power forward or shooting guard.
Also, I saw the injury that happened to the scream team performer. It looked as if he lost conscience in mid air during a flip. But I hear that he did have movement in all his extremities. So that is good news. Keep him in your prayers.
I can’t wait for the season to start so i can begin to get over the disappointment of the tribe and browns. The cavs looked good last night and I hope they can carry into the regular season.
I like the WFNY shirts… Where can we get one?
My other observation: JJ Hickson reminds me of a lab puppy with those huge paws that keeps falling down the stairs: he’s got all these physical tools, and he’s going 100 MPH all the time, but he just doesn’t know what to do with them yet. Give him time.
