Well, At Least We’re Deserving

Just found this bit thanks to Bugs and Cranks.  For the record, I would love to see the Cubs win the World Series, assuming that it was not against the Indians.  If anything, it would allow us to be done with this whole curse thing and direct all attention back to our dreadful history.  From ESPN’s Page 2…

That’s choking to me. Best record in the National League and not even coming close to winning any of the three games. They choked.

Man, Chicago has had plenty to cheer about over the years. They’ve had the Bulls, the Bears, and even the White Sox bring home championships. Until they have decades with nothing, they get no sympathy from me.

    YEAH!…so there…Cleveland rocks.

  • Ben

They had Jordan and 6 titles. They had Walter Payton and one of the most dominant football teams that I have ever seen. They had the 05 Sox.

What have we had??? I just want to see a championship in my lifetime. That is all I want. If the Cavaliers were to win a title in the next 2 years with LeBron I will drive him to NY if he wants to leave. Just win. Once. Before I die.

God, I’m only 19 and yet have seen some of the worst times in our history as sports fans…. But, I still love this city, no matter what. It’s about the name on the front of the jersey, not the back.

I loved that bit about Cleveland in that article. It seemed to completely ignore that the reason Cleveland fans are suffering isn’t because since 1995 they’ve failed to win it after 7 attempts, its because before 1995, they hadn’t been to the playoffs in 41 years! I’m 27 and in my lifetime the Indians have been amazing compared to the way they played during a majority of my Dad’s life. Feel bad for the old Tribe fans, not the young ones. Although, feel bad for us young ones too.

Good point MadCowz… this was an argument I used to have with Red Sox fans in college before they won anything. They would try to carry around the burden of not winning the world series since 1918.

I finally snapped. I would look at these people and say, well, if we were both born in, say, 1979 and neither one of us has seen a championship in our lifetime, does it really matter what happened before we were even old enough to care about sports or even alive?

The bottom line is this. Nobody deserves anything. If the Indians ever win a championship it will rely in a large portion on luck because these teams just need to get hot at the right times and end up with a decent team before all the stars can leave to make a quadrillion dollars in another city. Baseball is a cosmic joke of inequality and inequity, even though I still love it desperately.

That’s why it is a good thing we have basketball and football to worry about.

The Cubbies did not choke. Playoffs is a different season so who cares what you did to get in you got in and that is all that matters. It is all about peaking at the right time and all of us that played sports actually understand that. During a season (esp one as long as baseball) you go through up and downs and you peak..then you decline. It is not a choke. Give credit to the other team sometime, it seems that all we do is look at the regular season as an indication when it comes playoff time when it doesn’t matter. Zambrano wasn’t pitching well the last month and that hurts a team.

Look at the super bowl last year. I picked the G-men. Because i hate Tom Brady? No, but because no one could beat the G-men at that time. They had something the Pats had never seen, a pass rush. They just peaked at the right time and at that moment in time were the BETTER TEAM. Maybe they weren’t on paper but they were performing as the better team and at the end of the day you have to perform not submit your resume from the regular season.

My boyfriend and i, who is a die hard cubs fan, have arguments about this all the time. He gets all emotional and looks to me like i have no clue what he’s feeling. I just look at him and say “hello cleveland fan!!” he just blows me off like i still have no clue. I was with him during the last game against LA and was praying the cubs would win just because i didn’t want to hear his **tching and moaning… didn’t happen. Yes the playoffs are a different game but seriously those guys played the worst baseball the first two games than they have in years, they choked. The last game i think they got beat fair and square, La was playing much better than they were, there were no errors to blame the loss on.

gw335204…what do you call the all errors the cubs had? That’d be choking son. Not peaking.

  • gw335204

Tampa…I didn’t say the Cubs were peaking. Since Manny has been a Dodger they have been the best team in the NL. It’s a different season in the playoffs..the regular season doesn’t mean anything anymore. Look at the Rockies the year before. Were they the best team talent wise on the field..no, but they did peak at just the right time. They shouldn’t have even been in the playoffs but it doesn’t matter what you do to get there its just being there. It’s a clean slate in the playoffs.
