12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas

It’s that time of year again. I love Christmas time. I’m not a huge fan of shopping and crowded streets, but you do what you have to do. We here at WFNY wanted to give you, our loyal readers a gift this season. While we can’t afford to send you all something, we thought a prize giveaway was in order. So allow us to present you all with: WFNY’s 12 days of a Cleveland Fan’s Christmas!

Here’s what you have to do to be eligible:

- Each day of the contest, we will ask a question for you to answer. Respond to the giveaway post with a comment formatted like this- restate the question, then answer it in EXACTLY 54 words. (Number of years since Cleveland’s last major pro championship!)

- You may only enter once each day. You are free to comment on each other’s answers, however.

- The winner will be chosen at random from the qualifying entries. Winners will be notified the following day by email (make sure the email address you registered to comment with is a real one!) You must be at least 18 years old to win, and only one winner per household during this giveaway please.

The prizes range from tickets to the Tribe home opener, to books, to jerseys, and even a few WFNY items thrown in there too. (Yes, shameless self-promotion!) No complaining about which prize you win, those have been randomly selected for specific days of the contest. Sound good? Hey it’s free stuff, how picky can you get?!  All answers have to be submitted by midnight, Cleveland time. Don’t worry about having the same answer as someone else, just put it in your own words. It isn’t a contest to see who is a better writer. Remember though…EXACTLY 54 words!

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    This one I witnessed in person. It may not be ‘the best’ statistically, but as a fan of his, it was awesome to see. Sandy Alomar’s game winning homerun in the 1997 all-star game. The only time a player was named MVP of the all-star game in his home stadium. Good player, better man.

    Game four of the 1992 Eastern Conference finals. Cavs beat the Bulls by 14 points and the best moment of the game was when Danny Ferry was ejected for punching Michael Jordan in the grill. Who knew that that man would later become the same guy to make two huge trades for this squad?

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    When Lebron James man handled the Detroit Pistons in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Scoring the teams final 29 of 30 points was simply amazing. I was watching the game in Orlando with Ohio friends who weren’t into sports. I was telling them at the time, “you are witnessing history right now”.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    2005 – Fourth of July. Pronk hit two home runs, went 3 for 4. It was dollar dog day which provided other impressive feats, but Travis proved to be the most impressive competitor that day. To top it off he hit a third homer of the day that evening in game two of the doubleheader.

    I gotta agree with TB. I was at the Viewing Party at the Q for that game with my dad, and the place was jumping like they were really there. That will always stand out to me.

    “What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?”

    Cleveland Municipal Stadium – circa 1992. Another Lousy Tribe game versus Oakland. Sixth inning – a guy jumps out of the stands in right center causing a five minute chase scene straight out of the Three Stooges. As a grand finale, he slides into home, jumps the rail and dashes into the stands. A great performance.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    Fausto Carmona in Game 2 of the ALDS in the magical 2007 season. Carmona didn’t let the freakish invasion of bugs break his concentration. Instead, he masterfully threw for 9 innings and gave up only 3 hits and 1 run to the Bronx Bombers. In the end, Cleveland won 2 – 1 in 11 innings.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    When I was a mere lad of only thirteen, I watched my hometown hero, Bernie Kosar, who had beaten Pukesburgh in Three Rivers to snap a losing streak of 16 there, beat the Squeelers yet again while passing for 414 yards on 28 completions with 2 touchdowns and only 1 interception. It was heaven!

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    ’95 ALCS. The Indians led Seattle in the eighth, one to nothing. With men on second and third, Randy Johnson uncorked a wild pitch. One run scored–and then out of nowhere, Kenny Lofton miraculously rounded third and beat the throw home. It was only one play, but it sealed our World Series appearance!

    The single most impressive moment that I can think of happened just this past summer at Jacobs, I mean Progressive Field. During the nightly hot dog race, the gallant and beautiful Onion easily beat the heavily favored cheater, Ketchup. It truly was an inspirational, underdog beating the bully moment.
    Like Rudy, but with condiments.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    By far, the most impressive performance I’ve ever seen was Boobie Gibson’s 3-point shooting clinic against the Detroit Pistons in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 2007. Just watching someone from a team that was supposedly a “one man team” light up a veteran team for three after three was unforgettable.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    My college roommates and I witnessed in the best summer of our short lives, Lebron James’ rack up forty-nine points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in a double over time victory over the Detroit Pistons in game six. Most notable was Lebron scoring the final twenty-nine of thirty Cavalier points.

    What is the most impressive single game performance you have witnessed by a Cleveland athlete?

    Well, since the question doesn’t specify “Cleveland athlete in a Cleveland *uniform*”, I’d have to go with a performance I witnessed about twenty years ago. An infield single that became a home run — without any errors committed. Of course, my brother was eight at the time. His Tris Speaker team won the game, too.

    1994, Jacobs Field, Indians v. White Sox, tribe gaining on the Sox in the standings before the strike. Young Kenny Lofton completely unnerves pitchers, steals bases, hits a homer, makes a spectacular catch in center and throws out a runner trying to score on a sac fly. Hard for a position player to thoroughly dominate a baseball game, but that day he had the world by the cajones …

    I was privileged to witness several legendary performances by Omar Vizquel and Roberto Alomar for three seasons. There was one particular game in 2000 when the pair pulled off incredible double plays three innings in a row, and after returning to the dugout, were called back for a curtain call.     Yeah I’m also going to have to go with Lebron’s “48 Special” in game 5 against the Pistons two years ago. In my short life I had lived through the Indians dominance in the 90′s, but I’d never seen a single Cleveland athlete do what he did. That was the definition of “beast mode”.

    Watching from a Tel-Aviv hotel at five AM local time, Lebron dropping the Pistons in Game 5 of the 2007 finals had my jaw dropped, and the entire hotel awake as I could not contain my amazement. “WITNESSING” the King do his thing from the holy land, does it get any better than that.

    The best performance I ever witnessed IN PERSON was actually just one hit. It was Kenny Lofton’s last home run as an Indian, possibly as a professional baseball player. I have never seen Jacobs Field so crazy. While he only got one hit that night, it was a clutch hit that I’ll never forget.

    I went with in person (and figured lots of people would take the game 5), although I would have to say that Carlos Baerga’s two home runs from different sides of the plate in the same inning would qualify as my top moment ever. Man his moustache was sweet.

    It has to be 1993 at Cleveland Stadium vs. Pukesburgh. METCALF had a 91 yard punt return for a TD in the first half and then took a 75 yarder for another TD in the closing minutes that served as the difference in a 28-23 Cleveland win. Will never forget the stadium’s chaotic atmosphere!

    In 1998 I went to Fenway to watch the Tribe. Jaret Wright unintentionally started a fight. It ended with a husky Jim Thome charging the mound against his hunting buddy Rheal Cormier. Once the fighting started I put my Tribe cap away so as to avoid a beating. Jim Thome hurtling himself was awesome.

    As much as I loved Lebron’s trouncing of Detroit in 2007, it was Boobie’s performance the next game that was most impressive. Nobody was shocked when Lebron went off, but nobody saw Boobie coming. Here a little known newcomer hammered the last nails into the coffin of the playoff powerhouse pistons. It was perfection.

    My most favorite and impressive game would be when Jose Mesa swung open wide the gate onto our Jake and the fans stood in awe and confidence that we would surely count the game in the WIN column. I remember standing cheering him out to his pitcher’s mound screaming YES!! YES, YES, YES, YES !!

    September 2007 I attended a Tigers versus Indians game. The Indians quickly fell behind by four but tied it by the eighth. In the eleventh Casey Blake hit a walk off homer. It was his second in four days and led to the Indians sweeping the series and basically guaranteeing they’d win the Central.

    Game 3 of 2007 Playoffs against Detroit. My dad surprised me with tickets to the game when I came home for a visit. This was the first game after the “Guaransheed” with the Pistons up 2-0 heading to the Q. Lebron played 46 minutes, and brought us back to life. Sheed got tossed!

    After Game 5: King is an understatement. I think god is fitting. I’m so tired and so worn down to express myself coherently. We finaly have a good moment to join The Drive/shot/fumble, red right 88 game 7. We have Game 5, we lived to see it, and it will change cleveland sports forever.

    As a huge Cavalier fan and a huge Detroit Piston hater, my favorite Cleveland moment was watching the Cavaliers eliminate the Pistons from the playoffs in 2006. Seeing Rasheed thrown out in frustration was priceless! Detroit basketball…no way!!!

    So I could have gone with the status quo and talked about Lebron but I want to talk about a Monday Night Football game I went to back in about 8th grade. Browns vs 49ers. Bernie Kosar’s last great game. Nothing better than watching Bernie light up the 49ers while pissing off coach Bill.

    Great one. I was in the car at a highway rest stop with my parents driving home from my brother’s college. They were both walking back from the little restroom building, and I was in the car listening. As Metcalf took that second kick back (and Nev Chandler was going BONKERS) I just starting laying on the horn in the rest stop parking lot to get my step-father’s attention. I’m sure everyone else thought we were nuts, but I didn’t care.

    Troy Smith, an athlete from Cleveland, and the Buckeyes romping the Wolverines, in perhaps the most exhilarating OSU-Michigan game ever, during the 06-07 season. It was my first year of school and my first Michigan game, and I really couldn’t ask for a more than that edge-of-your-seat, last-second, non-stop action.

    July 18, 1995. Bottom of the ninth. Carlos Baerga walks to load the bases. As he goes to first he claps his hands in encouragement of the next batter coming up — Albert Belle who hits a grand slam home run off of Lee Smith to win the game. It was Kenny Loften mug night.
