December 16, 2008Per Browns media relations:
Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers and left tackle Joe Thomas have been named to the 2008 AFC Pro Bowl roster, the league announced this afternoon.
In his first season with the Browns, Rogers leads all defensive linemen on the club with 72 tackles, including 51 solo. Rogers also leads the Browns with four and one-half sacks, 15 quarterback pressures, seven tackles for loss and has also blocked two kicks. This will mark Rogers third appearance in the Pro Bowl, as he was previously named to the Pro Bowl with Detroit following the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Thomas was named the starter at left tackle for the AFC. Thomas has started all 14 games at left tackle this season for the Browns. Thomas will make his second consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl after his rookie showing in 2007.
“We are happy and proud of Joe (Thomas) and Shaun (Rogers) for being selected to this year’s Pro Bowl,” said Browns Senior Vice President and General Manager, Phil Savage. “Joe continues to be a model of consistency and Shaun has played at a high level all season.”
In addition, Joshua Cribbs was named first alternate as returner and first alternate as special teams players. Browns K Phil Dawson was named second alternate, while LB D’Qwell Jackson and LG Eric Steinbach were named third alternate at their respective positions.
Josh Cribbs, alternate? I must say I’m a little shocked.
Talk amongst yourselves.

OK, I’ll be the first…
“The plaque for the alternates is in the ladies room…”
Rogers? Yes. Cribbs? Yes.
Thomas? I bet Trent Cole last night might disagree.
That’s one of my biggest issues with this coaching staff: rookies that show any promise seem to regress (Wimbley, Edwards, Thomas, just to pick on our first rounders).
I’m gonna be the first one to admit that Leon Washington deserved to be a pro bowler as a returner before Cribbs. Now as far as cover man on kicks and punts, no doubt in my mind that should be Cribbs’s ticket in. Dude is all over the field tackling people. For a team that can only get FGs on the board you would think the kicker would be the first one selected.
Sidenote….
How bout Nick Mangold goin to Hawaii as a reserve. Prolly the best Buckeye lineman i’ve seen in my generation (Orlando Pace up there as well).
As long as Holly doesn’t join him on the beach…
Didn’t they win state this year? I remember they did a Today Show appearance together the year he got drafted.
Was it in 16×9 picture format?
No Scott, that was RAC and Reid talking after the game last night.
No, boys–there’s two “B”‘s in “Cribbs”….well done, Rick.
Thomas really does not belong this year, but at least Rogers is being rewarded for a monster year. Cribbs is certainly the most glaring omission, though Phil should be there as well–too bad New England fans know how to work the interwebs. And I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but Favre? Really? Based on what exactly, his league-leading INT total? Another example of why fan voting needs to be given less value or eliminated altogether.
Cribbs was 10 in kick off return and 15th in punt return. No way he should go.
Thomas hasn’t played as bad as people think he has. He pretty much dominated Mario Williams for about 98% of the game and people look at 2 or 3 plays and say he’s been bad. Last night against Cole he had to make a choice as to whether or not to take the inside man or the outside. There was no back to help block or even chip Cole and the Guard was unable to handle the inside guy, coupled with Dorsey and his inability to get rid of the ball. Makes Thomas look like he did a poor job. That wasn’t necessarily the case.
Cribbs should be there. I’m glad to see D’Qwell get a little tiny recognition, guy has been a monster for us this year even though every other LB is terrible.
Rogers, I mean can we say anymore?
And Dawson gets snubbed, what else is new. Guy is like the 3rd most accurate kicker of all time and has never made a Pro Bowl.
I say Favre skips out on the pro bowl, even if he is healthy to play in it. Don’t know why, just got a feeling.
He’ll probably be too busy buying his plane ticket to hawaii and then trying to give it back or trade it in for a trip to florida instead
Orlando Pace is the greatest offensive lineman to ever play at OSU. Bar none. Mangold is good, but nowhere as dominant as Pace.
Cribbs should be there. Thomas was better last year, but so was the whole offensive line. Rogers had a monster year. Dawson, mehh.
@ Julie: I think Favre would buy a ticket to Hawaii then decide he’d rather hang out on the bayou throwing football with his friends and wear Wrangler jeans.
Then he’d realize he wants to play in the Pro Bowl, and Aaron Rodgers will take his place on the bayou. He will not wear Wranglers.
