Two Turtle Doves? Not Hardly…

The 12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas roll on today! Congratulations to Tampa Brett, who was randomly selected from among yesterday’s official entries! Tampa Brett will receive his choice of WFNY Hope shirts!

Today, we have a slight change. Thanks to diminishing math skills, we are changing the number of words for your responses to 64. (The last year of a Cleveland Championship.) Here again are the qualifications to enter the giveaway:

Each day of the contest, we will ask a question for you to answer. Respond to the giveaway post with a comment formatted like this- restate the question, then answer it in EXACTLY 64 words.

- You may only enter once each day. You are free to comment on each other’s answers, however.

- The winner will be chosen at random from the qualifying entries. Winners will be notified the following day by email (make sure the email address you registered to comment with is a real one!) You must be at least 18 years old to win, and only one winner per household during this giveaway please.

The prizes range from tickets to the Tribe home opener, to books, to jerseys, and even a few WFNY items thrown in there too. (Yes, shameless self-promotion!) No complaining about which prize you win, those have been randomly selected for specific days of the contest. Sound good? Hey it’s free stuff, how picky can you get?!  All answers have to be submitted by midnight, Cleveland time. Don’t worry about having the same answer as someone else, just put it in your own words.     Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I going to go with Bill Cowher. I don’t give a crap about history or what it was like to play with Brian Sipe. This lunch would be a full court press to convince him that it is in his best interests to coach the Browns. Or get him hammered in order to get compromising pictures leaving him no choice but to become coach.

    A lunch date with Albert Belle. How could you pass this up? The possibilites are endless. What is the thermostat is set above 60? Would “Mr. Freeze” smash it with a baseball bat? The conversation about his removal from Hall of Fame voting, despite being one of the most productive players of his, (and All) time? Finally, I’d so carpool with him. (Halloween anyone?)

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would have to go Austin Carr. He of the eloquently called Cavs games. What better way to spend your meal than listening to Mr. Cavalier ramble incoherently about the Cavs, Cleveland, and life in general. Imagine him shouting “throw the hammer down” while I chew my steak and question why did I choose him? Of course, we’ll be eating “DEEP IN THE Q.”

    Which former Cleveland player would I like to have lunch with and why?

    I’d like to sit down with Casey Blake. Sure he’s not the most popular tribe player, but after reading endless articles about his clubhouse antics, I bet the guy would be hilarious to spend the afternoon with. Besides, I’d get to hear a bunch of Joe Borowski rips, priceless! I’d also take pointers on how to grow such a wicked sweet mountain man beard.

    Which former Cleveland player would I like to have lunch with and why?

    I would love to have lunch with Omar Vizquel. During the run in the 90s he was my favorite player and I would enjoy talking to him about the talented teams he was on in 1995 -1997. I would enjoy getting the dirt on some of the players on those teams and we know that Omar is willing to dish it…Jose Mesa anyone?

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    This is an easy one — definitely Pedro Cerrano. I’d love to ask him whether Jobu was in any way responsible for his rise to the Presidency after his playing days were over, what with his famous renunciation at the end of the ’89 season; and if he has any regrets about the downward spiral that led to him hawking insurance after he left office.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would choose a man whose career with the Browns is brief but legacy in the state of Ohio is quite impressive. That person would be Chris Spielman. Reasoning being, he is someone that I respect quite a bit. He took a season off to care for his wife that was battling cancer. Plus, he is a great color commentator for the ESPN family.

    Despite the urge to write Jose Mesa and a hacksaw, I’ll go with my favorite athlete growing up – Mark Price. I want to know if he feels like a forgotten superstar, how much greater he thinks he could have been without bum knees, why he was so much better at calling plays than calling games, and ask him to tutor Wallace on free throws.

    A lunch with Larry “Brickshot” Hughes would be in order. I want to hear his sob story in his own words. I would also hold him accountable for his lack of enthusiasm to play in Cleveland and his selfish behavior. I would have to pay extra attention to him while he eats his meal because we all know how likely he is to choke.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    There is only one choice: Bernie Kosar. Besides being my childhood idol, I’m sure he could tell some amazing stories. If he gets “loose” enough (and we all know he would), I’d have him spilling the beans about Belichick, Romeo, and his unabashed love for Ken Dorsey. Maybe we could have lunch during a Browns game so I can hear him yell, “SINGLE COVERAGE!!!”

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    Bob Feller is my first choice of a former Cleveland athlete to eat with. Besides being an amazing pitcher for the Indians, he seems like a great person. During WWII he enlisted in the Navy. I can’t image any of todays stuck up athletes being this selfless (I am sure there’s a few like Pat Tillman). I know he would have some amazing stories.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I’d eat lunch with Al “Bubba” Baker. Why? Because he would bring the food, and I greatly miss that barbecue. Also, he is one of the best examples of former Cleveland players who have stuck around and established some serious roots in the community. We could also have a nice chat about how Romeo came in as a “defensive” coach and was a failure.

    I’m picking Shawn Kemp. I could ask him for some pointers on how to bed so many ladies, and how he thinks he matches up against Lebron in the area of “posterizing”. Plus, you know with an appetite like his, we’d be going to Old Country Buffet or somewhere where I could stuff my face, and not be the biggest slob at the table.

    If I could have lunch with any former Cleveland athlete it would have to be Bernie Kosar. A part of me recoils at the mere idea that I would pick anyone other than Jim Brown, but I have to be honest with myself: Bernie got me interested in Cleveland sports, and I would love to get his signature on my old kiddie Kosar jersey.

    John Rocker because you know that dude has a lot to say about everything and anything. He would have no filter and I’m just kinda down with that. Plus, I could bring my mlb.com purchased Indians Rocker 49 jersey, which was delivered 3 days after he got traded to the Rangers and have him sign it. Plus I’m sure we’d eat hearty. Rock on!

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?
    I would simply have lunch with the one and only Phil Dawson. He’s the only Brown who has been around since 99’ and he has seen every player that has come through that locker room. He would be able to tell me all the BS that has gone on behind the scenes, which player’s really wanted to be there, and why they aren’t good.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    While I hope LeBron becomes the best player to ever play his game, I’d sit down with best in his sport, Hector Marinaro. Fourteen time all-star, six MVPs, and three championships (yes, in Cleveland.) While soccer doesn’t get the glory, you have to respect a man who was cut during his rookie year, changed positions, and went on to score more than 1,400 goals.

    K-Beezy, I would imagine that organizing a lunch with the head coach of the JCU soccer team wouldn’t be terribly difficult — especially if you live on the east side. Give it a shot, you could be one of *two* winners today, eh? ;-)

    I would want to have lunch with Satchel Paige. I never saw him pitch, but I want to know his journey. I could read a book, but that wouldn’t be the same as hearing it in person.

    It would be an incredible honor to meet the man who could’ve been the best pitcher in Major League Baseball history had he been given the chance.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would most like to have lunch with Mark Price. Back when I was just a small child, my father had season tickets for the Cavs in the old Coliseum. The old Cavs were really the first team I ever fell in love with. Some of my best memories from my childhood will be in that forgotten arena and with that great, great team.

    It would be Derek Anderson. I have always wanted to be in the center of a cheering crowd and something tells me nothing would cause a louder cheer in a restaurant than DA’s propensity to choke, this time on a chicken bone. Hearing the long con leading to his last Browns contract would also be interesting as well. Is picking DA jumping the gun?

    Danny Ferry. Since he looks identical to my father (it’s kind of scary), I think I would be able to ask him anything. Like when you were playing, how did it feel to wear those electric blue uniforms and what was running through your mind when the Cavs drafted two centers in the first round of the 1996 draft (does anyone remember Vitaly Potapenko?).

    Lou Boudreau, hands down. As good as anyone else that ever played sports in this city was, he actually won something. I’d like to know how that feels.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would choose lunch with Rapid Robert Feller. I think it would be a great chance to hear the former World Champion talk about a host of topics including playing against Williams, Mays and DiMaggio. I would ask about his time in the service and his stories about Hall-of-Famers, nuances of the game, his part in baseball’s integration and if he had any regrets.

    My lunch with a former Cleveland player would have to be with Scot Pollard. I have so many questions to ask him that I wouldn’t even know where to begin! Why should kids “do drugs” like he said into the camera last year? Which drugs should they do? What happened to the other “t” in his first name? Did he lose it in a bet?

    This one is hard, there are so many angles to take, humor (Larry Hughes, DA) Lobbying (Bill Cowher), or the pure historic (Jim Brown, LBJ). However I have to pick Phil Dawson, he’s been the face of my favorite franchise since their return. To talk to him about all the kicks he’s made, situations he’s been in, players he’s played with, would be incredible.

    I would choose Kevin Mack. He was my favorite player when I was growing up. My brothers and I would always fight over who could be him when we played backyard football. I would want to hear about how he overcame the problems in his life. He is the reason I love big running backs and secretly hope for Beanie Wells in the draft.

    Easily Jason Michaels. Jason Michaels was the best platoon outfielder the Indians have ever had. He is also a great bench asset. If a bench clearing brawl were to occur, you know Michaels would be there kicking an ass or two. Just ask the cop in Philly whom Jason knocked on his ass. Pronkville? Yeah right. They should have made Jason Michaelsville in left-field.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would choose Orel Hersheiser hands down!! I would love to understand how he could put on his ‘game face’ every day he pitched regardless of the circumstances surrounding him. He is one of my most favorite true heros and certainly a man who respects the game as well as the players he pitched to. I admire him as a spiritual leader for athletes.

    Of all former Cleveland players, the one I would like to have lunch with the most is Chris Spielman. While he never played in a regular season game with the Browns, he had the courage most professional athletes do not and that is retire to be with his cancerous wife. His dedication to family and passion for football would be the ultimate life experience.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    …I got to thinking, “Hey, what if I could have lunch with someone I despise instead”. Therefore, I would absolutely love to have lunch with former Indians closer, Joe Borowski. We could go to the Sizzler and I could punch him in the face. Repeatedly. Why? Because every Cleveland fan deserves something nice at Christmas.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    My lunch would be with the hero of the indoor soccer pitch. The man who stood in goal for the Cleveland Crunch for years. The man who has taught hundreds (thousands?) of children all about the beautiful game, soccer. This man is Otto Orf. Not only is his flowing hair magnificent but his goalkeeping skills were quite above average as well. I choose Otto.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    I would definitely choose my favorite Tribe player growing up: Kenny Lofton. He was at the top of the list for steals most of his career in Cleveland, and did the team well throughout the mid and late nineties during the playoff runs and two world series. It would be interesting to hear about differences between the late 90s team and the 07 team.

    Which former Cleveland player would you most like to have lunch with and why?

    As a hockey fan and growing up watching the Cleveland Lumberjacks (anyone remember them) I would go with Martin St. Louis. He plays for Tamba Bay now, so Id like to find out why Melrose got canned so fast, they seem to like the topic on sportscenter. Hes someone that most people who know him and follow hockey dont know he was in Cleveland.
