Gambling Odds: The Future of the Cleveland Browns

Derek Anderson Fumble

You have to love a day in age where you can gamble on a team even when the actual players will not see the field for at least seven months.

While eight other, more fortunate and successful teams take the field this weekend, Browns fans have the following issues at their disposal:

- The future of Derek Anderson, and…

- The future of the Front office

Thanks to Bodoglife.com, we have the following items featuring our beloved football team:

**

What will the Cleveland Browns draft with their first round pick?

Corner back/Safety 2/1
Defensive Line 2/1
Linebacker 9/4
Offensive Line 7/2
Field (any other position) 5/2

What will Derek Anderson’s role be for week 1 of the NFL season?

Cleveland Back Up 7/5
Starter for different NFL team 7/5
Cleveland Starter 5/2

For which team will Scott Pioli be employed to start the 2009 NFL season?

Cleveland Browns 1/3
Denver Broncos 4/1
New England Patriots 3/1
Field (any other team) 5/2

Where will Mike Shanahan be at the start of the 2009 season?

Jets 3/2
Browns 4/1
Other Team 5/1
Cowboys 8/1
Chiefs 10/1
Out of coaching 5/2

I’m not sure about you, but 1/3 odds on Pioli to the Browns is pretty interesting.  Feel free to put as much weight on Vegas as you like…

I’m not a gambler, so if someone could enlighten me, what exactly does “9/4″ or “1/3″ mean?

    Thanks in advance!

    @lisol:

being the degenerate that i am: 9/4, for example, means that if you were to place $4 on the bet and win, you get $9 in return. its basically “9 for 4″

so in other words, by vegas only saying they’ll give you $1 for every $3 you put down, they’re pretty darn sure that scott pioli will be in cleveland next year.

Easiest way to do it is to add the numbers together and then use the second number as a liklihood.

For instance, the Pioli 1/3: If given four independent chances, he’d pick Cleveland on three of them. But in terms of payment, you would have to bet three dollars just to win one. So, you bet three bucks, he picks Cleveland, you get $4 (including your $3).

But if you bet New England, you can win $4 by only betting $1…

    Make sense?

Thanks Scott and Mendy, appreciate the breakdown.

Aaron Curry vs. Rey Maualuga what do you think the odds are on which one of these guys will take in April? Aaron Curry is who the browns should take with the Fifth pick, this guys is the real deal. Rey Maualauga is a year younger and played at a school that put him in big games, but the talent level around Maualauga covered up his flaws. Tell me who from USC you would want to build a team around from the past 5 drafts. Curry is a tough kid who has a nose for the ball and has the size to play inside, and the speed to move outside. If the new coach keeps the 3-4 we need talent at our linebackers, if we don’t upgrade this position will be in for another long year in 09.

Are these the same oddsmakers who said that the Browns were an 8 to 5 bet to make the playoffs this season? Until the Browns achieve some level of stability, I won’t be wagering on my hometown team. The stock market is a safer bet.

Does anyone really WANT to come here? I wish for a Pioli in the office and a Shannahan on the sideline, but we’re gonna end up with some shmoe upstairs, and another college coach/coordinator on the sideline. The Browns depress me anymore. Prove me wrong Randy, please, prove me wrong.
