(Dispatch Preview)

After a gut-wrenching loss to Edmonton, the Jackets finish out the “first half” of the season tonight against Calgary. In desperate need of points after letting the Oilers game slip away, they face a tough task against the Flames, who have had two days off, and who have won nine out of 12 (though, losing their last two). The 25th Man

Josh Barfield, Ryan GarkoPerusing the Internet for material, I came across a very interesting piece from SI.com’s Tom Verducci on the state of second-tier free agents and the lack of money available for them. In it, there was a blurb about how the fiscal situation of many teams last year (combined with the ego’s of certain players, IMO) forced several former stars into retirement, like our friend Kenny Lofton, Mike Piazza, and Sammy Sosa.

The money wasn’t good enough, so they were out of work and never were heard from again. The same thing is happening this winter on an even grander scale. Ken Griffey Jr., Garret Anderson, Nomar Garciaparra, Moises Alou, Luis Gonzalez, Pudge Rodriguez, Frank Thomas, Cliff Floyd, and Jim Edmonds could all be in that same boat – looking at either a minor-league or a one-year, low budget deal if they want to continue their careers. That hasn’t stopped Indians legend Omar Vizquel, who clearly just wants one more day in the sun. He has signed a minor-league deal with Texas. [Read more...]

Dante Lavelli, You Will Be Missed

There is not much that I can say that will do justice to Cleveland Browns legend Dante Lavelli.  By now, you have likely heard that Lavelli passed away late last night at the age of 85.

Lavelli is widely considered one of the greatest receivers to ever wear the orange and brown.  He hauled in 386 passes for nearly 6,500 yards during his career – spanning both the AAFC and the NFL – placing him second to Ozzie Newsome in both categories. Lavelli’s 62 touchdown catches place him right behind Gary Collins.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975, and will forever be remembered with teammates like Otto Graham and Lou “The Toe” Groza.

For more, I reccomend checking out Bob Dolgan’s report that is featured over at Cleveland.com.

NFL Draft Preview: Rey Maulaluga

Over the next few weeks, leading up to the NFL Draft, the WFNY team will disect the various draftees that may (or may not) fit into the system of the Cleveland Browns.  We’ll highlight strengths, weaknesses and the intangibles while leaving the comments for any reader commentary.

Potential Draftee: Rey Maulaluga – ILB, University of Southern California

Rey MaulalugaWhen a team is set on running the 3-4 defense, the best players on the field are typically the four linebackers.  We’ve seen the success of several teams that run the 3-4, with Pittsburgh and Arizona (two 3-4 teams) facing off in Super Bowl XLIII.  It goes without saying that the Cleveland Browns do not exactly have the tools necessary to be successful in said scheme.  Thus, the position of linebacker will be one that must be addressed during this off-season.  And when it comes to linebackers, few inside backers are getting the attention of USC’s Rey Maulaluga.

Whether it is for being on a team that is known for their all-around success, or whether it is for grinding with ESPN’s Erin Andrews, Maulaluga received a ton of coverage during the past college football season.  He totaled 73 tackles with 2.5 tackles being for a loss.  Maulaluga intercepted two passes, with one of them being returned for a touchdown – against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Remember that one?

While We’re Waiting…

While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing.  Have something you think we should see?  Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

“George Kokinis spent a second day visiting with the Browns on Tuesday, but there was no indication that an offer to become the team’s general manager was made. Owner Randy Lerner was not in the office, said a source. Kokinis, the Baltimore Ravens pro personnel director, visited with new coach Eric Mangini and his coordinators, and also with other Browns’ front office executives, including President Mike Keenan. If Kokinis doesn’t take the Browns’ job, he sure has learned a lot about the inner workings of one of Baltimore’s division rivals.” [Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer]

Larry Hughes Trade Watch

Remember when the Bulls thought they came out on top in this one?  Sure, Ben Wallace may not exactly be what he once was, but hey… Via By The Horns’ Matt McHale:

There are certain things in life you can’t wait to be rid of. In-laws. The flu. Hangovers (also known as flu-like symptoms). The nasty “rash” you “picked up” during your freshman year of college. For the Bulls and their fans, Larry Hughes is that rash. He’s already dropped rock-like out of Vinny Del Negro’s rotation, and, frankly, it says something about Hughes’ character that Jud Buechler could average 10 minutes per game for a 72-win Bulls team and yet ”Big Shot Larry” is riding the pine for a Chicago squad destined for around 35 wins and another trip to the NBA draft lottery. [...]

Not surprisingly, there isn’t exactly a healthy market for delusional shooting guards who are best known for taking too many bad shots while earning a cap-killing salary.

There are rumors that the Nets may have an interest in Hughes’ “services.”  I know that some Wizards fans wouldn’t mind having him back, though I’m not too sure why.  Perhaps it is a bit of “those were the days” type stuff?  I’m not sure.  I’ll let Craig take it from here.  He’s usually full of wonderful Hughes-based thought.

Jackets Preview Game #46

(Dispatch Preview)

The Jackets continue to play solid hockey, and continue getting cracks at teams right in front of them in the standings (Colorado and Vancouver last week, Edmonton tonight). This is their second-to-last game before the All Star break, and tomorrow’s game in Calgary is going to be a tough one. So, tonight’s tilt with the Oilers is that much more important, as every point is critical for the Jackets now, especially against teams right next to them in the standings. [Read more...]

Fourteen Indians Heading to WBC

Shin-Soo ChooNot long ago, we caught word that Grady Sizemore would be heading to the World Baseball Classic to man the outfield.  Soon thereafter, we praised Cy Young-winning Cliff Lee for opting to train with the Indians this spring, instead of partaking in the festivities.

If you are in the camp that prefers Lee’s decision over that of Sizemore, you may want to stop reading here.

The 2009 World Baseball Classic may feature 14 members of the Cleveland Indians as they take the field during the month of March.  Of those 14, eight members would in fact be from the 40-man roster and they would be featured on a handful of different teams.

What To Do With Wally

Wally SzczerbiakIf last night’s loss in LA was any indication, the Cavaliers have to get bigger in the post if they are going to contend with big, athletic, front lines. Now I’m not saying that every team has a front court like the Lakers, with a 7-foot center (Andrew Bynum), a 6’10 power forward (Pau Gasol), and a 6’10 small forward (Lamar Odom). But the Lakers exposed the Cavs lack of depth up front without Zydrunas Ilgauskas. While reports say Z’s foot is progressing better than expected, we all know he is just one awkward move away from serious damage. I think we can all agree that without Big Z, this team is not going to win the NBA Championship as it is currently constructed.

Without Ilgauskas, Anderson Varejao has moved into the starting lineup and has played well for the most part, though he has slumped of late. Some would say Varejao’s overall game gets exposed when he plays too many minutes. He is at his best when he is fresh, playing in spurts and in the fourth quarter of close games. Ben Wallace is getting himself back into form after the flu ravaged him for 10 plus pounds. Regardless of how good Ben can be on the defensive end and on the glass, he is still offensively challenged. J.J. Hickson continues to show a little spark offensively and as a shot blocker, but he is still a major work in progress defensively, and never met a shot he didn’t like. Lorenzen Wright is filling in admirably, but he is clearly not the answer, and Darnell Jackson has been buried by Mike Brown. [Read more...]

The 5-Hole, CBJ News and Notes – 1/20/09

Every Tuesday, WFNY’s The 5-Hole brings you up to date with the goings-on of the CBJ…

The Week That Was

Week: 2-1-0, 4 points

Overall: 22-19-4, 48 points (3rd division; 10th conference)

With just five games to go before the All-Star Break at the beginning of the week, the Jackets were not only in the midst of the playoff hunt, but are also in the midst of trying to get healthy. More importantly than that, however, they continue to play with fire and energy, and are continuing to be rewarded. With two of their three games this week against Western Conference foes hovering in the same neighborhood of the standings, each game takes on a little more importance if the Jackets hope to continue their playoff push. Was Braylon Edwards Allowed to Play Basketball?

Braylon Edwards BasketballWhen I first heard that Braylon Edwards was a guest at [Tigers center fielder] Curtis Granderson’s celebrity/charity basketball game, I thought little of it.  I mean, we all know that Braylon is philanthropic.  We all know that he has strong ties to Detroit, Michigan.  And we all know that he’s a pretty athletic guy that most people would pony up to watch play a little five-on-five.  However, once I got a chance to look a bit more into the game, I find myself wondering if the Browns were aware that Edwards was suiting up for the event.

One look at the picture to the right, and it is pretty evident that Edwards wasn’t just out there to loft up a few 15-footers.  There are several photographs of Edwards attempting a bevy of slam dunks, and there was even an account that one of them was completely botched.  No offense to people like ESPN’s Dana Jacobson, but she isn’t exactly the person that I’d pen as an expert at the Mikan drill.  Given that, these types of games can get pretty sloppy – would you want your top receiving target out there throwing down slam dunks in transition?

“The game we have all been waiting for! LeBron vs. Kobe. Cavs vs. Lakers. Who would have thought that the game would be dominated by the role players tonight? Kobe and LeBron combined for 18 of 47 shooting with 11 turnovers.” [Steve Avery/LakersNation]

Cavaliers Preview Game #39

Cavaliers vs LakersCleveland Cavaliers (31-7) vs
Los Angeles Lakers (31-8)
Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
Monday, January 19, 2008

TNT/FSNOH/WTAM

Here we go. The Cleveland Cavaliers kick off their first extended Western Conference road trip of the season. In all reality, the season is about to really get interesting now. The Lakers, Blazers, Warriors, and Jazz on the road, then home for a tune up against Sacramento before hitting the road to play in Orlando. And then February isn’t any easier. Lakers, Suns, Pistons, Raptors, and Grizzlies at home, and the rest of the games on the road. The end of February sees the Cavaliers play a 4 game road trip that extends into March. Their opponents on that stretch are the Rockets, Spurs, Hawks, and Heat. A home game against the Bucks, and then it’s back on the road to Boston. So yeah, while this has been an unbelievable season so far, the Cavaliers are now getting to the meat and potatoes of their schedule, and it begins tonight with a great matchup against the Western Conference leading Los Angeles Lakers.   [Read more...]

Coast To Coast

Coast To Coast is your bi-weekly (as in, twice a week, not every other week…or does that mean it’s semi-weekly?) look at the NBA outside of Cleveland through the perspective of the Cavaliers. Because how else will we find out who the Wizards might trade to Cleveland?

Lets start by looking at some blogger rankings. The first one is one that we took part in, and the second one is one that we did not. First, the latest round of NBA Blogger MVP/ROY Rankings are in, and this time they were hosted by TruthAboutIt. No big surprise, but LeBron is in first for MVP and O.J. Mayo is in first for ROY awards. Please check out the whole list for all the analysis on each of the selections provided by some of the best bloggers out there.
[NBA Blogger MVP/ROY Awards Round 5: It’s Unanimous, Guess Who]

The second list is With Malice’s NBA Blog Power Rankings. This one was maybe surprising, maybe not, but the Cavaliers were voted #1 in the power rankings. Again, check out the full list for the full array of quotes and breakdowns provided by some great NBA minds.

Dear Braylon Edwards

Boy, that escalated quickly… I mean, that really got out of hand fast.  First, you started dropping passes.  Then we started booing you and making fun of you.  Then we even started mocking your commercial endeavors like 5 hour energy.  Then you yelled at us for hating you because you were from Michigan and claimed to have carried the Browns to a ten win season.  And then we kept going making you the punchline of all our jokes until you basically became the only one to blame from this season other than Romeo Crennel.

Look, it never should have gotten to that point.  You had a tough year.  There were some bad breaks.  Both your QB’s went down and had tough seasons.  Your offensive coordinator seemed to have a sophomore slump as well.  You didn’t have anybody to draw attention away from you as Stallworth was out and nobody emerged as a third wide receiver this year.  On top of that, Winslow was hurt, which just meant a defense could lean just a bit more in your direction. Kokinis Could Be GM Today

All my WFNY brethren are seemingly photoshop geniuses.  I have thrown my hat into the ring with this picture on the right.  What’s up now, boys?  Try and keep up, ok?  (I used PowerPoint because I don’t know how to use PhotoShop.  I know.  Genius, right?)

Yesterday the Ravens dropped their playoff game to the Steelers and that could mean the Browns will finally have a general manager.  George Kokinis has always been the frontrunner for the job.  Well, since Scott Pioli turned the Browns down and they hired Eric Mangini, anyway.  Now that the Ravens are out of it, George Kokinis is expected to return to Cleveland today for interview number two and potentially a job offer from Randy Lerner.

All indications are that Kokinis was avoiding becoming a distraction yesterday at the AFC Championship Game.  According to Tony Grossi yesterday, GK was avoiding the press box so as to avoid becoming a distraction to the Ravens’ goal of defeating the Steelers. Imagine that. A guy as GM who might try NOT to be a distraction? [Read more...]

Breaking Down The Delonte-less Cavaliers

Delonte West injuredThis week, the Cavaliers begin their west coast swing, starting with tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers. A week ago, this was all set to be a marquee matchup between 2 of the NBA’s top 3 teams, record wise. That’s still true, but for the Cavaliers, this game will be much more difficult thanks to the loss of Delonte West.

The win against New Orleans on Friday night was huge for Cleveland. It gave them a much needed boost of confidence that they could still beat elite teams without Delonte. Watching them sulk on the court during the game against the Bulls after West went out with the stitches and fractured wrist, it was clear they just never regained themselves. So by beating a really good Hornets team Friday, the Cavaliers were able to depart for the west coast with some momentum and confidence.

That being said, though, teams will often have to find new ways to win when they lose a key contributor. By no means are the Cavaliers the only team this year to face tough personnel losses. In fact, the Lakers themselves have had to deal with injuries to Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar, and Luke Walton. The key for any team who is missing an important piece is how they adjust and find ways to still win. The Cavaliers will be no exception.    [Read more...]

And Then, There Were Two

Detroit Lions FansOne of the legendary pathetic organizations in all of pro sports, the Arizona Cardinals, have reached the summit. After their 32-25, blowout, choke-job, come from behind win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Glendale yesterday, the Cardinals punched their ticket to their first Super Bowl in franchise history. This is an organization that started in Chicago, then moved from St. Louis to Arizona. During the Arizona years, the Cardinals have seen hundreds of players come and go, and only had one playoff win to speak of. That was until January 2009. Three improbable victories later, Ken Whisenhunt, a former Bill Cowher disciple in Pittsburgh, has gotten his team to the promise land to face his old team.

Cleveland Browns FansDuring the Super Bowl era, of the teams that have existed for more than 50 years, only three teams hadn’t made an appearance on the game’s biggest stage. You can cross the Cardinals off that list. To quote the great George Costanza in “the contest” episode after Elaine dropped out – “And then…..there were two.”

The Detroit Lions and your Cleveland Browns. [Read more...]

Oh…and I think there may be some sort of basketball game being played tonight.

“Just leave me alone about this stuff,” [Kobe] Bryant said. “I’m dragging my feet coming over here because I could’ve answered the questions before [the media] asked them.”  It is understandable Bryant doesn’t want to get into the rhetoric. Neither did James, who skipped talking about the game all together before the Cavs boarded their jet to head west for the start of a four-game road trip.  It is also understandable because for all the comparisons between the two and the guaranteed national television dates set up around their meetings, it simply hasn’t been much of a rivalry. At least, not quite yet” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]
