Report: Eric Mangini Hired by Browns By Week’s End

Eric ManginiI find it a little odd that this report is coming out of Boston, but WEEI (their 850 AM) has the following:

WEEI’s Michael Holley is reporting that Eric Mangini will be named the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns by the end of the week. Mangini would replace Romeo Crennel, who like Mangini was a former Patriots defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick. [...] Holley also reports that Pats G.M. Scott Pioli will not follow Mangini to Cleveland, likely heading to Kansas City or staying put in Foxboro.

Reportedly, Holley has personal ties to Mangini.  Alas, those that took the 1/3 odds on Scott Pioli coming to Cleveland appear to have quite the sunk cost.  Also, those that said you’ll be selling your tickets come a Mangini hire – especially prior to hiring a GM first – please feel free to contact me at any time.  If you need a refresher on Eric, we got you covered.

    Lerner must have a hardcore man-crush to be making this happen so fast, and prior to a GM hire. Personally I was pulling more for the Pioli/Mcdaniels combo, only because I think McDaniels could help Quinn out a lot, but I guess we’ll see what the Man-genius can do, hopefully not turn into a Man-joker.

    At least we know that Randolph conducted an exhaustive search, interviewing all attractive candidates, and soliciting the advice of trusted advisers and consultants with experience in making NFL front office and head coach searches. Oh, wait… he relied on his own experience to make this decision?

    Here’s the million dollar question. With Mangini does RAC have a job waiting on him as an assistant? ESPN’s been pusing reports that he would love to come back in one way or another to the Browns, and Mangini presents those opps.

    THIS SUX!!!!! I got excited this morning when I heard Rizzo say that Randolph was waiting to talk to Shanahan before he hires ManGina. I also was hoping that since Spags “wowed” the Browns, and they were interviewing Heckert, that maybe he would go that way instead. Well I guess I can dream like I have been dreaming of a Superbowl all these years!

    If you sell your tickets because of this and stop being a Browns fan, don’t bother coming back when the Browns eventually get good again. I’m not sure if Mangini is the guy that will make us good, but thats besides the point. We aren’t Lions fans here, we are Browns fans. The Browns have been bad for a while now, but our fans have stayed with them, selling out every game. The Lions have been bad for a while now, but they never sell out games anymore. So again, we aren’t Lions fans, don’t stoop to their level, have some pride in your team, and don’t be a pussy because they aren’t hiring the guy you wanted

    Ricky is right. I bet everyone who has been hot for spags were the same crew who were clamoring for RAC. People keep comparing RAC and Mangini but the more apt comparison is between Spags and RAC.

    Ricky, I have been a season ticket holder since I moved back here in 2001. If I (or anyone) doesn’t feel like spending their money on tickets then so be it. I spend $450 a year on them. Not much I know, but $90 of it is for worthless preseason games which irritates to me already. And add to the fact that I have seen NO general improvement in any area from seven years ago, well that REALLY irritates me.

    I, like Randy am strongly considering getting rid of mine and going to the September games and watching from home the rest of the way. I would still be a Browns fan but I won’t pay for it. Does that make me a lesser fan than somebody who has season tickets?

    Actually, brad in atl, I think the RAC-Mangini comparison is very appropriate. Spags is in high demand, seemingly interviewing for every opening. RAC may have had plenty of interviews (Rooney Rule), but Lerner was the only one who wanted to hire him. And it’s the same with Mangini. Why the rush? Where are all his other suitors? Absent a job offer from the Browns, he may be looking at a high school gig.

    I’m so sick and tired of people bitcing about Mangini. The man has had winning seasons in two of the last three seasons, probably with less overall talent than we have. Do you know how many winning seasons we’ve had since 1999? Two. Two winning seasons in nine years. Hell, we’ve had three since 1990. I think Mangini is a good, possibly great choice for this team. We have a plethera of talent, but no one that can lead them. We need Manginius and his ‘lil buddy to come here. Then take Aaron Curry in the draft.

    Ricky…..you have your opinions, I have mine. Let’s keep it that way.

    I’ve been a Browns season ticket holder for many years, and a fan since 1970. This is not about not being a Browns fan, on the contrare my friend. I’m not a sychophant, and Randy Lerner has no business making these decisions. I don’t want a coach and management team that is belligerant and arrogant towards it’s fans, and that is exactly what Mangini will bring-do your homework. Been there done that, enough is enough.

    If you are willing to accept and be content with anything this Browns management does because you’re a “fan”, than so be it and all the best. I won’t castigate you, don’t castigate me. I am very passionate about this and what I feel is being done to this team and this town-hopefully on that we can agree.

    I chose two years ago after seeing Romeo Crennel in action that I wouldn’t go to another home game under his regime and I am glad I made that decision-I have absolutely no issue in terms of rebuilding and watching losing football as long as it’s under competent control. This is supposed to be entertainment, no embarrassment. Randy Lerner has shown me that he cares nothing about his loyal fan base…….what he’s showing you is up to you.

    Just wanted to add, I’m not necessarily a Spagnuolo guy, nor am I in anybody’s corner, really… I don’t work for a search firm or have inside info on any of these guys. I just know that when I look at Mangini, there are red flags all around him. And just like Romeo, we again appear to be hiring the one candidate *nobody* else wants. That should concern any fan.

    Word is that Mangini will bring in Bill “Billy” Callahan is his Offensive Coordinator, a key position don’t ya think? Will Billy C. come equipped with Schwinn training wheels?

    That’s the issue, that’s what you get when you bring in this type of coach-instead of one with the gravitas to bring in a major league/professional coaching staff. The coordinator positions are vital to success, and if Lerner didn’t THIS TIME review that with Mangini prior to his hiring than the Browns are totally ManKok’d.

    Not acceptable, not this time. This job calls for big league experience.

    (Kris) Jenkins said he has spoken with former coach Eric Mangini – “one of the best men that I’ve met in my time on Earth,” Jenkins said – since he was fired and said he would continue to. “Just because we don’t work together doesn’t mean that I can’t keep in touch,” Jenkins said.

    A four-time pro-bowler tootin the horn for the next browns head coach aint bad right?

    Don’t worry guys, this is just Ricky being Ricky. He is incredibly “holier-than-thou” when it comes to his fandom, and we are all just mere bandwagon jumpers and ingrates compared to him. We should just accept any and every thing the Browns do as unassailable gospel and never show any sign of frustration or displeasure with them, lest we appear to be unworthy fans.

    i don’t care who you hire as coach, this team ain’t gettin better until the players on the field get better, whether that be from improvement, or replacement.

    coaches get too much credit too much blame.

    we were singing the praises of rac a year ago, when he probably didn’t deserve the credit, and now we called for his head when it clearly wasn’t his fault.

    browns fans. ha.

    Far be it for me to tell everyone to calm down because I am as excitable as anyone, but please calm down.

    First of all, this is an unsubstantiated report like Tron says. Second of all, if anyone is going to sell their tickets it is based upon the horrendous results of the past X number of years. Nobody is buying and selling their tickets at the whim of whatever the last bad decision was. It is a collection of a lot of bad decisions over a lot of time which has made the asset of buying certain Browns tickets basically WORTHLESS. It is a personal choice and can be justified any number of ways by any number of people. Someone’s fan stature cannot be judged except on whether they attend games and arrive late / leave early like Dodgers fans, if you ask me.

    Anyway, the other thing to keep in mind is that no matter what Randy Lerner does, we are going to be very skeptical. I am going to say that I was a fan of bringing in Butch Davis. It worked out miserably, but it sure seemed like a good idea at the time.

    I was a fan of bringing in a calm, old-school coordinator like Romeo after the flashy Butch Davis debacle. It just turned out that Romeo was deficient in too many areas for the Browns to take advantage of his attitude and demeanor, which are both excellent. That, as we all know, didn’t work. I was upset with management for KEEPING Romeo after the Carthon debacle, but even I loosened up after the 10 win season.

    My point is that you just never know when you are going to be wrong. I would have fired Mike Brown after last season, and / or the season before. Then he came in here, opened it up to his coordinators, embraced change and the early returns are pretty good. Maybe I was wrong about Mike Brown? You just never know.

    I will give Eric Mangini a shot if Lerner hires him. And then I will judge him.

    If this city continues to sell out each and every game, great. I have had season tickets for the past 7yrs and sat through some miserable garbage as most of you have. I will not be renewing my tickets next year. Question my fanhood if it makes you feel better. Aside from the actual tickets, it gets expensive to be a fan. It’s not all about the money though. I never questioned the money in the past, but coupled with what we’ve been handed from this organization and lack of effort or caring from most players, I now question the money. We deserve much better than this. Give me a reason to spend my money and I will.

    So call me a pu$$y if you think I’m a sell-out. But I have the right to call you a moron for wasting your money on something that doesn’t produce results. Repeatedly. You spending your money on tickets, tailgating, parking, expensive beers and food does not make you any more of a fan than I am.

    I guess my million dollar question (post #9) either wasn’t worth a million, or everyone is so frustrated with a Mangini hire they don’t care enough to even think about RAC returning as an assistant. OR maybe…just maybe…people don’t mind the idea of RAC in an assistants role at all.

    My main issue with this move is that is wasn’t made by a GM. I don’t actually mind the choice other than I am worried about who the coordinators will be. I definitely don’t want RAC as the DC, I want the 4-3 defense anyway.

    Doesn’t Mangini believe in the 3-4? I thought thats why Vilma wanted out and possibly Vernon Gholston is developing the rap sheet of a BUST. Which is very sad to see.

    I am very disapointed that this was done without a GM in place either. It virtually means that Kikinos has the job before even interviewing. Is that right? they also did not look at all possible candidates. Lerner wanted to get a deal done fast so he could get back to england, and thats sad. I will still be watching every sunday, and come March ill be raving about the FAs signed and the Draft soon after in April. but this hiring before signing a GM, or even talking to the guy that will probably be hired seems just wrong.

    Mangini might have success here, he might not, but there is no denying the fact that there was something about this coaching search that sure seemed odd…no thorough nationwide search, just a race to sign someone to the dotted line…the proceess didn’t feel right and if I had season tickets I would be selling them too until I saw a product worth paying for on the field.

    Mangini without a gm in place. A coach who’s attitude makes him seem as cranky as a certain NE coach, and as passive as a certain former cleveland coach. This is enough to make even Chuck Norris and Mr.T shed a tear.

    Not that I don’t think Mangini has some potential to succeed, but for the love of god can we at least pretend to look like we know what we’re doing.

    @bk – The Shapiro family is from Baltimore. When Modell moved the Browns, Mark Shapiro told Scott Pioli (they were friends when starting out with the Indians/Browns, respectively) to contact his sister to show him around and help him get settled. Mangini went along for the ride, and ended up marrying the girl.
