While the Cavs have played reasonably well since Delonte West broke his wrist at Chicago on January 15th, they would certainly do well to get him back on the court sooner rather than later. His perimeter defense and mid-range scoring abilities are un-mirrored by any other players on the Cavs’ roster. The Cavs have won 7 out of the last 10 games if you count the game where West was injured, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. While I won’t call it “ugly” the Cavs have, at times, been about as pretty as a Pittsburgh cheerleader with Delonte on the mend.
But the news could be turning for the better. The News Herald reports that Delonte might be back a bit before the all-star break.
“The last report I got, this is coming off on Thursday,” he said. “This is exciting news. Plus, I’m running out of suits.”
Let’s hope that Delonte is right to be optimistic and that he won’t have to go out and buy any more suits. The Cavs have been fortunate with elevated performances from Lebron James and Mo Williams, along with some surprise contributions by Sasha Pavlovich. Assuming those types of performances continue, the Cavs might even be deeper today than they thought they were before Delonte got hurt in mid January. At the same time, there will be a lot less worried Clevelanders if we don’t have to bet on Sasha playing at his current level for the rest of the season.
