Preview: Blue Jackets vs. Ducks (Game 60)
February 21, 2009Cavaliers Preview Game #54
February 22, 2009In typical Browns fashion, the team does not exactly have all of the chips falling their way. Much in need of an impact linebacker this off-season, Wake Forest’s Aaron Curry seemed prime for our choosing with the fifth overall selection. However, couple his exponentially increasing hype with the potential slide of top-ranked collegiate players like Michael Crabtree and other teams ahead of the Browns may be looking Curry’s way.
Mary Kay Cabot had a story regarding Curry’s upbringing in this morning’s PD. But what most fans will also want to read is Scout.com’s soundbytes that they obtained from the currently ongoing combine.
He was asked by reporters to give his thoughts about potentially playing for the teams selecting in the top-five and Curry had great things to say about every team.
But again the question about playing in a 3-4 defense came up and Curry believes he has the versatility to make an impact no matter what scheme he plays in.
“It doesn’t matter to me,” Curry said. “I have the ability to rush the passer on the outside and I have the strength to play on the inside in a 3-4. I think I can come in instantly and make an impact on anybody’s defense. My versatility as a linebacker will allow me to play in a 3-4, inside or outside; you can’t go wrong [with me].”
The one thing that the Browns do have going for them is the dually increased hype regarding USC’s quarterback Mark Sanchez. It was once thought that Georgia’s Matt Stafford would be the surefire first selection to the Detroit Lions. However, if Sanchez can prove his worth (at perhaps a lower cost to the team), Stafford could be there for the having at the third overall spot currently held by Kansas City.
If Curry is selected before five, George Kokinis and crew may seriously have to consider trading down or acquiring more draft picks. Rey Malaluga’s name continues to float around the circles of Berea, so it would not be far-fetched for the also-former Trojan to be the one holding the Browns jersey on stage come April.

It’s really a shame that Taylor Mays is staying at USC for his senior season. He would’ve been the perfect guy to trade down to the middle of the round and get.
Wait for next year, Biff!
Taylor Mays would have been good enough to pick at 5 in my mind, Sean Taylor was picked at 6 I think and he was great for the Redskins. Mays seems like a guy who would be a workout star and have his stock shoot up because I’ve heard he runs like a 4.3
Mays would have been worthy of a top-5 in my mind. My problem in looking at this draft (and every draft) is that it’s always easy to say we should trade down… and I would love us to move down to 10-12 and take Rey if Curry is gone.
But, there isn’t really anyone on the board that I can see a team wanting/needing to move up 5-7 spots to get. It takes two teams to tango on draft day. We might get stuck reaching for someone because we can’t trade down.
I guess the other option would be to play “Minnesota Vikings Draft Ball” and just let your pick-clock expire a couple of times. But, then you might not get who you want, either.
I guess that works as a cost-saving mechanism. But I think the goal in trading down would be to acquire more picks while hoping to land the player you want.
My thinking right now is that Curry is looking more and more like he’ll be gone by the browns pick (I really hope Im wrong). While Curry is my first pick, there might be a few teams willing to trade to get Crabtree or one of the top 2 QBs, but if not, I would not mind this idea of getting right tackle. As long as its not Andre Smith who apparently left the combine, and is messing his future up right now.
If Curry is gone, I’d be okay with taking Smith if he’s there…
There is absolutely no way the Lions will pass on Stafford to pick Sanchez, no way. Also……would be absurd for the Browns to pick a right tackle with their #1 pick as they already have tons of cap space locked up on the left side. I’m all for offensive lineman, but it just ain’t gonna happen in round one; you can’t spend half your cap on your offensive tackles.
I agree Randy picking an O-lineman makes no sense whatsoever. I would absolutly love to get Curry. But I was thinking, Detroit has 2 first round picks. What if we offered DA for their 2nd first rounder? They could take Smith at 1 and would have a QB in DA. Then we could take someone like Curry, Jenkins, or maybe trade back and get even more picks. Then with the pick for DA we could pick someone like Knowshown Moreno. I would looooove to get him in the Orange and Brown.
I feel like we’re going to get an OLB/DE player in Brian Orakpo or Everette Brown which isn’t a good thing. Just take a look at what hapenned to Kamerion Wimbley when we drafted an OLB/DE player years ago. If Curry’s gone, then I want Maualuga.
Missing out on Curry would be such a Browns thing to happen…
Curry is my man but i think he will be gone. Maualuga is about a 20 because he can’t cover a pass. He’s a two down guy. Anderson isn’t worth a first round pick. I have him as a 4th rounder if the Browns don’t cough up the 5 mil. Detroit should trade #20 along with their #2 and a 3 next year for our 5. That would give them the stud ol plus a top qb. I would take McCoy (best RB in draft), Unger (plays C,OG,RT) and English OLB with those picks.
