Cactus League Update: Jhonny Peralta Swinging Well
March 4, 2009Speaking Of Tribe Injury News…..
March 4, 2009I touched on it here, and felt that it was worth following with the recent updates given by Paul Hoynes.
Tribe left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is reportedly dealing with a sore throwing arm. The same arm that underwent Tommy John surgery, keeping Choo on the disabled list during the early portion of last season.
After the year that Choo had following activation, the Indians front office is understandably concerned with the injury; even more so due to the fact that Choo is on the South Korean roster for the World Baseball Classic.
If Mark Shapiro wants Choo to be removed from the WBC, it apparently takes several steps that resemble the proverbial jumping through hoops. An objection would have to be filed to the WBC committee. At that point, his case would have to go in front of a panel who would then decide if the Indians have a case or not. Shapiro and team trainer Lonnie Soloff obviously would like to have the injury examined here as opposed to being treated overseas. It’s looking like a fine line between respect for Korea and Choo versus taking steps to ensure that his player does not miss considerable playing time due to an injury that could have been avoided.
Initial word is that South Korea may only use Choo as a designated hitter, which I assume is a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, I’d rather him skip the tournament all together – and I believe the Indians share this sentiment.

(Update: Per Anthony Castrovince, it is the triceps of his throwing arm and not the elbow as previously reported. Not considered serious at this point, but still something that the Indians would prefer to monitor first hand.)

I don’t think we have to worry about the S. Korean team overextending Choo.. they need to keep him healthy enough to serve in their army in a year or two.
Get well Soo.
