The 5-Hole – Blue Jackets News and Notes: 4/7/09 – The “Zero Hour” Edition
April 7, 2009While We’re Waiting… LeBron’s Star Treatment, Gibson’s P.O.A, and Bynum’s Return to L.A.
April 8, 2009Not all that long ago, we had discussed a minor faux pa that occurred on the Internet side of the Browns. Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was listed on the team’s official roster with full bio – which has since been removed.
The consensus was that this was simply a slip up and that the there is no way that the team could consider Maclin with the fifth overall selection. Michael Crabtree, maybe. Maclin, not so fast. But as the draft nears, Scout.com’s Ed Thompson reports that Maclin has in fact made another step in fulfilling the prophecy by including Cleveland in his tour de workouts.
Maclin has already visited with the Cincinnati Bengals, and he is scheduled for official visits with the Detroit Lions, the New York Jets, the St. Louis Rams and the Cleveland Browns so far. He’s also scheduled for a private workout with the Oakland Raiders this week. […]
Over the span of his two seasons at Missouri, Maclin caught 182 passes for 2,315 yards and scored 22 touchdowns.
With the Donte Stallworth situation looking to still be in the early stages, thinking is that Eric Mangini does not feel comfortable rolling into his first season with the Orange and Brown with either Syndric Steptoe or David Patten as his second receiving option – and for good reason. But there is also very little chance that the team would even consider Maclin an option at the fifth overall selection.
The team obviously wants to trade down. However, if anything is taken out of this, it is that Cincinnati and Oakland are also interested in Maclin’s services. If they like him enough, would they want to trade up? Would any other team be eyeing Maclin that would want to jump in front of either team? This remains to be seen.
At least the team appears active in the NFL Draft. This may at least help those of you that still feel undderwhelmed by the whole lack-of-free-agents thing that has occurred over the past few months. Or not.

Popular WR Maclin Visits Browns [Scout.com]

could the Browns / Mangini / Kokinis actually be genius enough to float rumors like this based on “accidental” postings on the website?
Is that little addition to the roster on the webpage thing a trick for every visiting player? Do they show him what it would be like to be featured on the webpage of the Cleveland Browns and it accidentally gets posted?
Under what circumstance would a web person from the Browns be creating a Jeremy Maclin bio page for the website?
Who knows, at this point. Nothing surprises me.
As a jaded fan, I wouldn’t impute brilliance to any move the Browns organization makes right now
I hear you craig. I create/maintain web pages for a living, and you can’t just ‘accidentally’ put a page on. there a several steps to put a page up (As you know).
Something seems fishy.
Exactly Brendon… I can’t create the scenario where this accidentally happens unless it is like the major media and obituaries where they have them pre-written for certain people.
Do the Browns pre-wright their bio pages for potential draft picks? Seems like a move that is ripe for leaks if that is the case.
And go ahead and insert your jokes about how getting drafted by the Browns equates to a career obituary. Just know that I already thought of it.
Could be that they love what Maclin brings to the table. He has very sure hands, and is pretty damn fast. Never know they may actually like him more than Crabtree… But, I just want them to trade DA already so we can know how many more picks we’re gonna have.
It has to be a ‘Whoops!! We “acidentally” showed our hand. Now everyone knows who we want. Now… who wants to trade up to get Maclin so we don’t.’
I’d say there is some gamesmanship going on, trying to bait someone to jump up to 5.
P.S.
The Raiders love Maclin, and may be crazy enough to jump up a few spots to grab him.
Maybe we are planning on grabbing more picks……
I think that maybe their web team has set up some sort of database to html program that lets them automatically take college player info and create a player bio. during testing the site accidentally got published
I read something John Clayton wrote about the price for Braylon Edwards being a first and third round and how that was a good option for teams like the Eagles or Giants. Maybe we are looking at him on the possibility we actually get another first rounder a bit farther down. Maybe that is just hope, I don’t know.
Braylon NYC NK.
I am going to eat a big crow burger here, but if we get a first and third for Braylon….. I do it yesterday. Think of this, a WR with our fifth pick. A stud USC LB with the other 1st rounder. I’m hearing Laurenitis might fall to the 2nd round so we get him with our 2nd rounder. Then even more defense the rest of the draft. Maybe even pick another WR later in the draft. There are some talented WR later in the draft. At least better than Steptoe!!!
The offer was a first, third, AND Hixon for BE: how the Browns turned that down is beyond me. With Plax gone, though, there may still be a chance to get that back.
Don’t look now guys, but you’ve just been cited by Branson Wright: http://blog.cleveland.com/bransonwright/2009/04/a_story_in_the.html

What? Really? Where did you see that?
