Indians Call Up Tony Sipp From Columbus
April 22, 2009NFL Draft: Beanie Wells Disputes Injury Rumors
April 22, 2009Information isn’t exactly pouring out of Camp Secretive in Berea. In fact, I wonder which is greater, the number of playoff wins by the ‘new Browns’ or the number of legitimate reports about Cleveland’s plans for Saturday?
One report that I had dismissed a while back as posturing was that the Browns were interested in USC QB Mark Sanchez. Perhaps you are like me- with Quinn and Anderson still on the roster, why would they want another QB? Even if a trade of DA was imminent, it still wouldn’t make much sense to me that they use the #5 pick on Sanchez with all the other holes and players available to them. But the talk won’t go away.
More than one source is saying that Sanchez is a legitimate possibility for the Browns at 5. Now I have to pay attention. The more I think about it however, the less it makes sense.
If the Browns were to select Sanchez it would more than likely mean that Quinn is on his way out the door. In fact, Scott Wright made a statement in an interview over at No Logo Needed that the Browns have an offer on the table for a first round pick. Wright didn’t give the team, but you would have to think it was either the Redskins, Jets, Broncos or 49ers.
So let’s try and follow the logic here of taking Sanchez. You get a guy that started only one season of college football. A QB who (according to Scouts Inc.) has a great release and good mechanics. “Arm strength is adequate but not great. He can make all the necessary throws in the NFL but he needs to be good with his timing on certain throws vertically and outside the numbers. Gets good zip on intermediate throws, especially over the middle. But can’t drive it vertically like Stafford and his deep outs take a bit too long to arrive.” He is somewhat mobile, but raises questions about his ability to manage a game, particularly because of inexperience.
So, a QB with an accurate arm on short and intermediate passes, but lacks experience. Isn’t that exactly what we have in Quinn? Except Brady has been through 2 NFL seasons already.
If you take Sanchez and deal Quinn, you are also handing the starting job this year to Anderson. No way Sanchez comes in with his limited experience in college and starts from day one in Cleveland. (Speaking of Sanchez in Cleveland, has the man ever played a game when it was under 40 degrees?) What’s that you say? Flacco and Ryan did it last year? Sure they did. They had success. They also played 4 years in college, and had outstanding defenses and running games to take the burden off the QB.
Not to mention Brady Quinn is the most popular player on the Browns. The team hasn’t seen a player that the town wants to rally behind since Kosar. Why not just paint over the Browns’ mural in Berea while you’re at it Mangini. About the only thing worse than trading Quinn from a PR perspective would be to change the helmets.
So if they took Sanchez and traded away Quinn for picks, the question remains- who is going to catch the ball? It apparently won’t be Crabtree, not even at 5 if you believe this story. Maclin certainly won’t get past Oakland at 7, so forget him with whatever pick you get in return for Brady. That means Percy Harvin and his failed drug test? A reach with Hakeem Nicks? Whichever WR we get in exchange for Edwards?
Count me as one not entirely thrilled with those prospects.

the rumors and sources are probably playing up the browns wanting to draft Dirty so that we get offers to trade our pick…the player we probably want (malaluga) we dont want at 5 so we are looking to trade down and get more picks in the process
0% chance we really take a qb…in any round
If they draft F’ing dirty Sanchez, I will lose it. Some fans apparently want us to trade Edwards, Anderson, Quinn, Rogers, etc. and just start a team full of rookies. Not to mention this is the weakest draft class in years.
Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.
If they take Sanchez, I probably won’t watch a game this year. That would be an epic mistake. His bust potential is way, way too high.
A few things to say here. One, Brady has been knocked on accuracy by people outside of Cleveland. Ill say its better then DA, but its below avg. for an NFL QB. Also, I can see the browns looking at Sanchez if he falls to them to trade with WAS and get an extra 2nd rounder, or later picks. If that happens, then I would think Jenkins is their target. Another thing to think about is if Sanchez is gone, WAS still is looking for another QB. I read on a ESPN chat that there are rumors that they would trade their 1st rounder for BQ. Personally, I would love that. It would allow us to get Raji and Jenkins in round 1, then in round 2 look at LB (Matthews, English) and WR (Nicks, Robiske later). Still not a fan of a potential Edwards trade. I think it hurts more then helps.
I wouldn’t say 0% for any round, remember DA and Quinn are the only QB’s on the roster now.

Exactly like Brady Quinn was two years ago… We already have one overrated pretty boy quarterback on this roster. We don’t need two.
More of a follow-up question to my first post. Would people trade Quinn for Jenkins? I for one would do that and have Jenkins play safety, and maybe slide into a Nickel back at times.
if curry is there they take him— if not they trade quinn, draft sanchez and keep edwards—- they now have another 1st rounder to get 1 of the usc LB’s— they have their 2nd rounder for the center they want—- start the year with derek and a team that won 10 games 2 years ago— minus KW2 plus shawn rogers and 2 drafts
bottomline a qb is a leader position and sanchez is a leader
no way they can have a winning team with quinn and DA on the team at the start of training camp— especially with the contracts they both have
Hey Chris I like your thinking, but one thing that was mentioned. Why would we trade Quinn to get another QB with less mobility and 1 year of college experience. At least Quinn had 4 years of college and two years with the Browns-granted they were mostly from the sidelines. Still I keep Quinn and trade Edwards. Edwards don’t want to be here and we won’t be that good anyway. So we build a little now-suck again this year- then draft Taylor Mays next year. That guy is an absolute stud!
I don’t think they’re intent on trading Quinn or getting Sanchez, but that they’re blowing smoke to drum up interest in their #5. Mangini likes ball control, not vertical passing with the inevitable interceptions, and Derek Anderson doesn’t fit his mold. What coach feels secure enough to start developing a new QB from scratch while playing another one who doesn’t fit the system? Mangini is a control guy, and Anderson is the epitome of undisciplined and erratic, with his red zone interceptions. If this draft is deep in something, it’s LBs, and they’re probably looking to get extra picks and double up on defensive guys. But if any QB is gone, it makes sense that it would be Anderson.
I find this silly, because at this point, everything is smoke and mirrors and nothing is reliable. However, this IS a possibility–even if a remote one–so it’s worth discussing.
Now, I hate to ask silly questions like this, but HOW IN THE NAME OF MEL KIPER’S HAIRSPRAY CAN ANYONE SAY SANCHEZ IS A LEADER?! The guy started A year (as in ONE–SINGULAR) surrounded by NFL-caliber talent against a weak conference, and suddenly we know he’s got the qualities to lead a struggling team at the highest level?! At least with BQ you have a guy who is familiar with the realities of pro football. Brady is no General Patton, but Sanchez doesn’t even qualify as Gomer Pyle! But please, let’s throw tens of millions in guaranteed money and the keys to the franchise over to the new flavor of the month–a guy with a skill set just like the pretty boy we have now, but with less football experience. After all, USC QBs have consistently proven their skill and leadership at the next level: Matt Leinhart sure demonstrated some mad beer bong skills while leading those coeds into the hot tub! John David Booty was a real find in Minnesota! For the love of Pete (Carroll), give me a break!! Mark Freaking Sanchez?! Really?!
If BQ and DA really aren’t the answer at the quarterback spot, then trade Quinn for picks, stick DA behind center, sign some journeyman for backup, and soldier through a 12-14 loss season this year. Then look for a QB next year, when guys who have actual leadership experience are available. Or, here’s a thought: we have a former first rounder with alot of hype who hasn’t had the chance to prove himself one way or the other ALREADY UNDER CONTRACT–perhaps we give him a shot?
Forget QBs, forget WRs, and focus on (1) building the lines (2) stopping the run, and (3) building a ground attack. We play in the AFC North, not the Pac-10 with a bunch of creampuffs, or the Big 12, where video game style offense rules the day. It may not be sexy, it may not make the highlight reels, but it wins games, and that would be nice for a change.
B-bo has it 100% correct.
I’m with b-bo. Focus on the trenches.
But I like video game style offense.
“But I like video game style offense.”
Like the kind where there are two pass plays and two run plays. And if the defense guesses your play, the entire defense collapses on the one player? Oh, and there aren’t 11 guys?
Mark Sanchez is the new Akili Smith.
I read yesterday that Mangini and Crabtree got along great, Crabtree wanted to be a Brown, and the Browns really liked Crabtree. I think that was actually in the PD. So…..conflicting reports?
I mainly like video game offense because I like the word “hut” and can hear it for half an hour straight when playing said video games.
Didn’t the Plain Dealer also report that the Browns fell in love with Crabtree when they met, and Crabtree loved the Browns too? Whats the deal with that?
As a Browns fan, I view the draft as my team’s Superbowl each year. Free-agency is kind of like the playoffs, and this year I felt pretty dissapointed by the Browns performance. I’m hoping they can rebound with a strong performance and win the highest post-draft grade from the experts at ESPN. Boy that would make me happy.
Heck I’m just glad that this year’s Superbowl, er….I mean draft, is looking to be pretty darned exciting. What a lousy showing we had last year! Here we go Brownies, here we go!
@ Ricky – actually, Tony Grossi wrote a post today on cleveland.com saying the exact opposite…
I have said it since Mangenius got hired…I don’t care which guy is our QB as long as the system is built around them…IE if it’s a ball control short passing game…give me Quinn….if it’s a vertical game built around play action give me Anderson…..just pick your style and ride the guy…..
On BE…trade him. If you get offered a 3rd round pick take it. Reality is he’s not resigning and that means we get zero back. Take what ever they offer and call it a day.
No matter what go browns
Luckily for Glaumdawg a good grade from ESPN always equates to the team performing well immediately.
The talk here in DC is that Dan Snyder is in love with dirty Sanchez. Trade down?
I say you have to give Quinn a shot, Anderson is a back-up who had 12 good games, a-la Holcomb. Trade Brayon for a 1st and 3rd or what ever you can get. If we can get Hixon or another receiver in the deal, draft Crabtree and then use the Giants #1 for defense.
One other scenario that no one is talking about is: Brayon to the Eagles for Brown. Get rid of a guy who is unhappy and get a legit shutdown corner to go across from Wright. Then McDonald becomes the nickel back. Suddenly you are a safety away from having a decent defensive backfield.
