While We’re Waiting… Home Court Advantage, Mike Brown’s Decision, and Kanye West’s NBA Playoff Video

While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Quicken Loans Arena Intro

About that home court advantage: “While the Cavs do not like to lose at any time, there is no doubt games here have become a sweet racket.  The Q is consistently loud because so much noise is manufactured through the Scream Team, the human fire engine during the Cavs’ player introductions and the thunderously booed Michigan/Boston Red Sox/John Elway photos on the replay board during opponents’ free throw attempts.  Even a dull game, and this was anything but that, is loud.” [Bill Livingston/Plain Dealer]

I’ve gone on record saying that I supported last night’s move, but not everyone has to agree: “In one of the worst decisions in sports history, Mike Brown decided to rest his starters for the Playoffs last night, and the Cavs lost. LeBron, Mo Williams, and Ilgauskas sat for the whole game, and Varejao and Delonte West sat out the second half. Now the 2008-09 Cavs are merely the 5th team to finish a season with a home record of 39-2.” [Cleveland Frowns]

Brian Spaeth also agrees with Frowns: “As Coach Mike ran the bench into the ground – thereby defeating the purpose of “rest” to some extent – I couldn’t help but have my teen angst.” [BTAA]

So far, so good on the Travis Hafner/Victor Martinez power front.  [DiaTribe]

We may have some competition in the WR market: “Yesterday, Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said his team will listen to trade offers for wide receiversAnquan Bolden. [...]  That forces the Browns to make some concessions if they want to deal Edwards to the Giants. Of course the Browns want to get a smiliar deal Detroit got for shipping Roy Williams to Dallas. Thanks to Bolden now in the mix, it is probably a good chance the Browns won’t get exactly what they want.” [No Logo Needed]

And finally, your musical host for the 2009 NBA Playoffs: Kanye West.  I’ll take Yeezy over the Pussycat Dolls any day of the week.

Was that picture taken during the NBA’s “Green Week”?

The hypocrisy is absurd. Pretty much the only player who does anything environmentally friendly is Steve Nash.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Scott

A: First game of last year’s playoffs.

And I agree. Though they did wear organic t-shirts that week. [makes sarcastic finger wagging gesture]

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/ Rick

How about we trade Edwards for Boldin?

  • Nicko

Cleveland Frowns: Remember never to go to that site. The guy has probably been a Cavaliers fan for five years…

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Scott

Now now, Nicko. Everyone can have their opinion.

  • Lyon

with Boldin in the mix, I don’t think it changes things too much. Philly still needs a big play WR, just like a couple other teams around the league.

    /{trying to believe what I just said}

  • adam

    i <3 kanye and lebron

  • TampaBrett

Cool video. Except the last few seconds.

  • Nicko

    Yeah you are right….

I just don’t understand it, like the whole Chalupa thing. I just don’t get it…

I kind of agree with Cleveland Frowns. I thought for karmic purposes you had to try and win that game. Especially considering that our dread rivals, the Boston Celtics, hold the distinction of holding that record. If that record was held by the Milwaukee Bucks than you let it slide but not the Celtics…

Nicko: Born and raised in Akron since 1978. My grandpa died on the same day of the Drive. I was up in my room crying about the Browns loss (mom said I could have a Super Bowl party right before the Drive started — first party I was ever allowed to invite friends from school to b/c my birthday is in the summer) — when my sister knocked on the door to tell me about it, and I was still more upset about the Browns because my grandpa lived in another country, couldn’t speak English, and I never saw him anyway.

I remember exactly where I was and who I was with for the Fumble, the Shot, and the Ninth Inning.

Can understand your disagreement on Brown’s decision, but “probably been a fan for five years” hurts, man.

“…because my grandpa lived in another country, couldn’t speak English, and I never saw him anyway.”

Awesome visual of you telling your sister, “Who cares?!? He doesn’t even speak English!”

Can we put this notion of “blowing out the bench” to rest. You have 4 guys averaging less than 20min of burn play for 40 min in ONE game. So now they are burnt out and worthless. Please think just a little people.

And seriously Frowny, “one of the worst decisions in sports history”. Way to be overly dramatic.

  • Nicko

    Frowns sorry man….

“In one of the worst decisions in sports history” I thought was a bit dramatic too (like my five years comment)

    My feeling is this:

The record means nothing. It’d be great to be “tied for the best home record of all time” and have LeBron get hurt and have the team bounced in the conference semis. The example I cited both yesterday and in e-mail discussion about this this morning is:

Who remembers that the 2001 Mariners won 116 games (most in MLB history)? Hardly anyone. Why? Because the Mariners got bounced in the ALCS by the Yankees.

And the other point is this: I choose to find encouragement that basically the last seven guys off of our bench took a team playing to improve their seeding into OT, and had a chance to win it (had the Slip Monster not grabbed Boobie’s foot). Some of those guys are going to play a role in the playoffs. Seriously, you don’t find that encouraging?

  • Nicko

And let the record show that Delonte agrees with you. He was pi$$ed he was never brought back in the game, especially the end.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Scott

“And let the record show that Delonte agrees with you. He was pi$$ed he was never brought back in the game, especially the end.”

I was thinking the same thing. But how big of a slap would it be to replace one of those guys in OT after West sat the entire half? I guess there are a lot of variables involved.

Look at it this way, playground ball made it to OT and lost by only one against a full lineup from the opposition.

  • mendy

a playoff bound opposition at that, scott

  • Jay

Jawad Williams just jumped (a healthy) JJ Hickson on the depth chart.

  • marco

    You remember the Mariners.

If we lose in the finals to the lakers, we got nothing. We play the starters for one quarter, we have [a tie for] the record in the bank.

The think I don’t like about punting on the record is that is says that “nothing matters but the championship”. I disagree. Records matter, and giving the fans who bought tickets to the game matters too.

  • dwhit

I hear Kanye West likes fish sticks…

  • bridgecrosser

“In one of the worst decisions in sports history”

Cleveland Frowns eats some Hyperbole for breakfast, has a little Exaggeration for lunch and then takes Over-Reaction out for a nice steak dinner.

Who cares what the home record is unless they win the title?

  • BELIEVEland

@Scott at #2… not last year’s playoffs. That’s at least the season before. First round last year vs Wiz the freebie T’s were yellow. Second round vs Celts they did wine and navy and laid them on your seats, alternating sections to give the arena a checkerboard look.

Looks like 2007 Eastern Conference Finals to me… wine-colored “Beat Detroit” T’s.

  • bridgecrosser

@ Scott – the RISE UP in the rafters should confirm it. They also gave this photo out in a giveaway as a mousepad or something likethat early last season, so it was not taken last year.

  • S-Dub

I hope we’re in the last 12 seconds of that video next year….

  • steveo

I know i’m in the minority here, but Kanye West’s music blows.

if you can even call that music.

  • D-Train

cleveland frowns is almost as bad as the guy that tried to rip off the site “heylarryhughesetc…”

dude. stop writing. stop putting your thoughts into text.

everytime you write something, a steeler fan is born somewhere.
