While We’re Waiting… Florescent Hat Guy, The Mo Williams Trade, and Rondo’s Elbow
May 1, 2009Paterno: Add a 12th team to the Big Ten
May 1, 2009Since the NFL grants waiver priority to the worst teams in the league, the Browns’ 4-12 record from 2008 placed them pretty high on the list. With the Patriots waiving linebacker Bo Ruud only one year after drafting him, Eric Mangini and George Kokinis pulled the trigger two days later.
Per Browns Media Relations:
The Cleveland Browns today were awarded linebacker Bo Ruud off waivers from the New England Patriots. In addition, the Browns announced that they released running back Allen Patrick.
Ruud was a sixth-round draft choice of New England last year and spent his entire rookie season on the Patriots’ injured reserve list. The 6-3, 235-pounder played in 46 games with 33 starts in his career at Nebraska and totaled 216 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 25 stops for loss. He also intercepted five passes, three of which he returned for touchdowns, tying a school record. Born September 2, 1984, Ruud attended Lincoln (Neb.) Southeast High School.
The Patriots drafted Tyrone McKenzie in the third round of the most recent draft, leaving Ruud without a roster spot.
Ruud was a four-star linebacker coming out of high school. On top of the numbers listed above, Ruud was All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2007. He comes from a decent line of NFL talent as his father and brother both played in the league. His experience in the middle of a 3-4 scheme should help him earn a spot with the 2009 Browns. He’ll likely compete with the Leon Williams’ of the world for a back-up spot to Eric Barton and D’Qwell Jackson.
Not earth-shattering by any means, but it does add to the depth chart.

I just hope this Ruud keeps his helmet on…
6-3, 235-pounder
I’d like to see him put on a bit of weight to play in the middle of the 3-4, personally. As small as D’Qwell is…
Rofl…at what Boomhauer said….We’re still the only team I have ever seen actually called for that penalty.
He’s not a big guy but he’s definitely athletic, could be a cover LB or potentially a nickel back in a scrape (we always seem to be in a scrape at that position)
Can he run? If so, he could be a hybrid safety.
All this talk about Ruud being undersized is pretty pointless. It Mangini already said Maiava whos 5-11 is going to play inside I’m sure he wont have an issue with a guy 4 inches taller trying to do the same thing.
I agree though, he should bulk up to about 245 if he wants to nail a backup job on the team I just dont think it will be part of the decision making process for Mangini.
Correction: ESPN has Maiava listed at 6-0 230 lbs while they have Ruud as 6-3 234 lbs.
I wish the Browns would have gotten Paul Rudd. Then we could at least laugh WITH the team instead of at it.
made with real panther…
60% of the time he’ll tackle everytime!
