While We’re Waiting… Underestimating the Fans, and Thoughts About the Frontcourt
June 30, 2009Honk Shoooooo…. Tribe Drops Another One
June 30, 2009Bob Finnan of the News Herald is reporting that Varejao’s agent Dan Fegan has confirmed that his client will indeed opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday. This isn’t unexpected. The Cavaliers were certainly prepared for this. It also doesn’t mean that Varejao won’t be back with the Cavs next season.
The Cavs can still negotiate with Andy, and do retain his ‘Bird Rights’ meaning they can go over the salary cap in order to retain his services. He is not a restricted free agent however, so the Cavs would not have the right to just match any offer that he receives.
Will Andy sign with the Cavs? Too many variables to tell at this point. It isn’t certain what the market will be for the big Brazilian. Most teams aren’t looking to make big offers this summer for free agents. Andy has proven to be quite versatile however, and that certainly will work in his advantage. It is also uncertain how the latest round of Charlie Villanueva rumors will affect Andy’s desire to resign with the Cavs.
Check back later for Rock’s analysis on Charlie V and the Cavs.

If I were another team in the East, I would be falling all over myself trying to start rumors of 5 year $50 million deals for AV. I think the truth is that most teams probably realize that Varejao is a nice complementary piece on a good team. He’s only a starter on a team with a ton of scoring and is probably best suited to be a 25 minute a night super sub. That said, the Cavs need him. Even if they sign Chuck V, they won’t have anyone to defend a 4 with a decent offensive game. For me, I’d love to see the Cavs sign Andy to a deal along the lines of 3 years, 25 million.
How many teams can actually do that in the East? The Pistons and who else?
I would be SHOCKED if he came back.
I would be shocked if he isn’t back. I don’t think the market is looking all that fabulous for Andy. I also think the Cavs will end up needing him as much if not more than anybody else.
I’m not sure how many teams in the East are buyers/have cap space for a guy that will want a deal over the MLE.
The Pistons are one, the Raptors could be if they don’t resign their guys, as well as the Hawks. I don’t think the Raptors would be interested. Out West, Memphis, Portland and OK. City would be the only teams I think with enough $$ and any interest.
I can’t believe anybody is going to give him more than the Cavs are scheduled to pay him. I really hope we don’t give this guy 8 million or whatever he THINKS he’s worth…but if somebody else is willing pay him, then great. Let them ruin their cap space.
Signing CV would leverage the Cavs to a position where we could sign and trade him and get the wing player we need. Jackson and JJ need to step up at some point and this would be the time.
@6 – wouldnt you rather re-sign AV and then send Jackson or Hickson in the trade for a wing player?
Not really a comment on Andy – but I think his agent is turning into a Rosenhaus/Boras type. Which is not a good thing.
@7- No way! You won’t get anything for them because the salaries of the traded players have to be within 125% of each other. I think Jackson makes like 800K and Hickson makes around 1.5 million. However, if we sign AV for 8-9 million, we would get a lot more quality in a trade. Not to mention, doing this would maintain our cap flexibility for next year without sacrificing much talent this year.
Sounds like all of this is probably moot anyway. Detroit has a lot of money to spend and they want CV, the Cavs won’t be able to come any where near them in a bidding war.
can the cavs still do a sign and trade involving AV? if so, AV + hickson + gibson to Tor for bosh? or maybe even, AV + hickson + gibson + nathan jawai to phoenix for bosh to Cle for Amare to toronto?
If we can walk away with CV or worst Sheed, that wouldnt be so bad.
AV back, but only for a good (read: cheap) price. He’s not worth breaking the bank on. I know we need a winner now, but if we sign AV to something silly it will put a hurt on our chances to pick people up in the coming years.
If the Cavs get Villanueva, I’d be happy seeing Andy walk and Joe Smith taking his place next season. Joe Smith and more minutes for Darnell Jackson and possibly a healthy J.J.
After watching Joe Smith’s “defense” last year, I shudder at the thought of having him backup CV. The Cavs need someone like AV who can defend bigger PFs and who can help on breakdowns off the dribble.
Wonder if Ferry is encouraging talk that Cavs are more interested in paying big bucks for CV than they really are, in order to drive Detroit’s offer up.
Re Andy, easy to imagine that Joe Dumars might be very interested, given that he played and won with Rodman, a guy with similar intangibles and similarly limited offensive skills.
How long is it going to be before it’s Ferry deja-vu, and he again starts spreading outrageous lies about Varejao and his non-existent demands for $10 million a year.
