Breaking: Jackets, Rick Nash agree to 8-year extension

July 4, 2009Well I guess Turk isn’t going to Portland after all… “Free agent Hedo Turkoglu has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors, multiple league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and is headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion, Carlos Delfino and Anthony Parker – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.” [Adrian Wojnarowski/Yahoo Sports]
A statistically minded Pistons fan concedes that the two big signings won’t be enough for anything in the end: “Of course, if all we focus upon is scoring, then Gordon and Villanueva are above average players. But once we move past scoring we see that Gordon was below average last season with respect to rebounds, steals, turnovers, blocked shots, and assists. And Villanueva was below average with respect to steals, turnovers, and personal fouls (and not really far above average with respect to anything else). In sum, it looks like the Pistons have traded away valuable cap space for two players who are not going to take this team to a championship.” [Dave Berri/Wages of Wins]
Sources indicate that hot-shot prospect Hector Rondon might be seen by our very own DP sometime in the near future: “Also, while I have not been told this and am merely speculating, expect right-hander Hector Rondon to be promoted in the coming days and make his next start sometime next week in Columbus (probably Tuesday July 7th). With John Meloan slated for the spot start in Columbus yesterday, and after he was traded right-hander Brian Grening getting the quick call to fill the short-term void, they will need someone to fill that rotation spot. Conveniently, Rondon pitched on the same night so he can slide right into it.” [Tony Lastoria/Indians Prospect Insider]
Not sure if you even noticed, but it looks like Matt Herges was designated for assignment: “Manager Eric Wedge did not comment on who was coming or going, but in the clubhouse, reliever Matt Herges was shaking hands. ‘I got designated (for assignment),’ Herges said. ‘I’m not here anymore. I don’t really know what my options are at this point. I’m not sure if the Indians would even want me down there (the minors).’ Herges, one of the game’s nicest people, went 2-1 with a 3.55 ERA in 21 appearances.” [Dennis Manoloff/Cleveland Plain Dealer]
When Phil Dawson is holding out, you know something is up with the Browns coaching staff these days: “We knew that Dawson originally held out of of voluntary workouts because he wanted a new contract. However, this is first I’ve heard of anything since Dawson returned during the minicamp sessions. Schefter is well-connected in the NFL, and while I doubt there is a swarm of sources flooding him about Dawson’s situation, I don’t think he would rehash an old rumor for the sake of reaching for news.” [ChrisPokorny/DawgsByNature]
Have you always wanted to keep up with every single athletes tweets on a daily basis? I believe this site has everything you might need: “n the rapidly evolving universe that Warshaw wants to tame, athletes are talking past the mainstream news media to fans (and peers) in slangy, informative, amusing, contentious ways that can be as vivid as they are banal. And teenage (or younger) athletes are digitally updating the world at an astonishing pace.” [Richard Sandomir/New York Times]

Turk-what a whore that ugly dude is; stiffing Portland at the zero hour as Toronto comes up with $56M instead of $50M-I hope the difference is eaten up by Canadian tariffs. Portland is a young, talented, up and coming team-he’s gonna have fun with the stiffs and lame-duck Bosh he’ll play with in Toronto.
How pathetic. In the end…….it helps the Cavs. I repeat, how pathetic.
