Browns Release CB Rod Hood

August 31, 2009Rams 24 – Bengals 21
Another week, and another game where Carson Palmer doesn’t play. Chad Ochocinco did not kick any field goals or extra points. It must have felt very familiar for the Bengals defense as they were going up against former Ravens’ starting QB Kyle Boller, now a backup for the Rams. Boller was nearly decapitated at the end of an 8 yard scramble. Apparently he didn’t slide early enough as Bengals LB Keith Rivers hit him and sent Boller’s helmet rolling. There wasn’t much to report from the game. Afterwards, Chad Ochocinco scooped the entire media with his twitter reporting that the Bengals had reached an agreement with their first round draft choice Andre Smith. According to the Enquirer, Carson Palmer is back on the practice field on Sunday, but still not full go. As we all know the success of the Bengals will rely on their signal caller.
Ravens 17 – Panthers 13
All indications are that the Ravens are in mid-season form. This is bad news for the rest of the league and the Browns in particular. Joe Flacco was 23/28 with 247 yards and a TD. He led two first half touchdown drives of 80 and 90 yards a piece. And don’t let the score fool you. The Ravens starting defense exited the game after the first series of the third quarter. At that time, they had given up only a 38 yard field goal. I didn’t do exhaustive research, but I believe two of the four total sacks came at the expense of Jake Delhomme and the Carolina starters.
Buffalo 0 – Steelers 17
Ben Roethlisberger played this week and went 15/19 for 168 yards against the Bills. Hines Ward is still looking effective as well. He caught 5 balls for 74 yards. Roethlisberger has been nursing a bruised foot, but it certainly doesn’t appear that it will keep him off the field. Willie Parker was out with a hamstring injury. Rashard Mendenhall picked up 48 yards on 16 carries with a TD. We don’t really need to talk about the Steelers defense. They are good. Buffalo’s offense didn’t really test them, but when you are the defending champs it is kind of a given.

Rey Mauluga (sorry, no time to look up correct spelling) is closing in on a starting spot in Cinci. How good would he look w/ the Browns right now?
Humboltd, wouldn’t you rather have a wideout who runs a 4.5 40 and was projected to go way later as a slot reciever? Our guy plays a skill position, was touted as “NFL ready”, yet can’t play a snap. What’s the deal ?
Robo is a “smart kid” while everyone here has panned Ray Maauluga as some kind of devient since the Browns passed. Mangini (and his flunkie Kokinis) like “smart” kids. Mack and Robiskie can sure as heck beat Beanie Wells and Ray Maluuega in a game of chess.
Viva la beating the dead horse to a bloody stump!
Beanie Wells wont play 50% of the season.
Your LB boy is a headcase, which is why he fits in so nicely in Cincy. Any takers on an over/under of him having +/-4 DUIs in his career?
Robo is a decent WR. probably wont see the field much unless someone gets hurt.
Mack will be the starter at C for 10 yrs.
if beanie stays healthy, and that is the biggest if that I’ve ever seen, then he could be a legit starter for 3-5 yrs…but he wont last…hes way too injury prone…
Captain Psycho in Cincy will be in the league for 2-3 yrs and then will flame out after a bout with alcoholism and pain meds/PEDs…
DK,
Make sure you book it.
…its rey…
Mack is starting… how are you going to compare a C to a RB? and Dang, I hate having 4-5 pretty good WRs… stupid browns.
Ok Isis, everyone gets it. You only like the Cavs because they’re the winning team in town. The horse is dead, beaten, burned, flayed, mashed and run through a wood chipper already. Maluuega is the second coming at LB, Beanie never gets hurt ever and is the best RB since AP, Shapetti sucks and the Dolans are cashing out. Kokinis is invisible, Mangini won’t talk to the media, and smart people can’t possibly be good at sports. That pretty much sums up every post you’ve made in the last 2+ months. Yay for you.
oh yea, and Gimenez should change his name to “Hacky”
and for like the upteenth time, its Rey Maualuga. if you cant spell it, how can you even claim to know anything about the guy?
@8 A-freakin’-men. frontrunner ahoy!
None of us know how Maualuga will pan out but the early signs seem positive, and he appears to have allayed reactionary doubts about his intelligence/character.
What upsets me is that passing on Maualuga is emblematic of the governing philosophy of the current regime. When you become overly doctrinaire (ie. only drafting “smart”, “high character” guys) you exclude the possibility of getting potential gamebreaking players with some question marks like Rey.
@Humbolt
If true, it’s also emblematic of the philosophy of pretty much every team in the NFL as every team with a pick passed on him so Cinci could pick him up. Judging by that team’s recent history of character judgment I’ll take a “wait and see” approach before regretting the Browns not taking him.
@11 – I agree to some extent about the gamebreakers at the expense of maybe their reactions on the field to it, but when it comes at a price of someone like a TO or a baby TO (denver), or someone along those lines, I personally would rather have someone that delivers on the field and isnt a complete nutjob…
Maualuga might end up being a good LB for a few years, but the dude has been quoted as saying some pretty odd things, he’s been arrested for a drunken fight in college (not saying this is a deal-breaker, but he apparently has had some fights in his past as he grew up in a military family), and acts pretty erratically at times on the sidelines…if they can bottle his aggression and his wildness a bit, he could be a good player…but the fact that so many teams passed on him and took other players before him, if he was such a great player, why was he not chosen earlier? its not like it was only the Browns who passed…
DK – to be honest, I think we’re simpatico on the issue. I know it is tempting to throw TO and Marshall into the mix as knuckle heads who poison team chemistry. But then (just looking at last year’s Super Bowl) there’s also people like Santonio Holmes or Anquan Boldin who have red flags in their files but who have prodigious talent and may be worth the risk. All I’m saying is that I wish the Browns were a bit more open-minded about people in that vein (like Maualuga), b/c you need guys like that to be a top-tier team
Also to add on, its more important to get ‘smart’ guys that don’t have character issues or any question marks with the first draft or two, until there are leaders in the locker room. Until they get a group of core leaders like the Pats (I really hate them, but I Bill gets people to buy in up there) they shouldnt try to take a potential risk like Rey.
With all the time people spend apologizing for not knowing how to spell his name, they could learn his name..
Rey Maualuga
Break it into three parts if you need to do so…
MAU – A – LUGA
Rey Maualuga
Maualuga
Maualuga
Roethlisberger…
Szczerbiak…
Just look, learn, and memorize.
All teams draft with the idea of finding productive players in the draft. That includes finding guys that will contribute to your team culture in a positive manner. Obviously that is the case. Robiskie is a cerebral player who was a very safe bet. Maualuga has a chance to be a very special player, but there were enough questions about his temperament that a lot of people stayed away. We will see.
I am tired of having this conversation. We might as well talk about “pop” vs. “soda” over and over again rather than talk about Maualuga, Beanie, Mack and Robo.

Blog foul #1: Criticizing spelling/grammar in a comments section
Blog foul #2: Criticizing discussion of salient topic in comments section of own blog.
You’re lucky that blog penalties offset.
But Craig, there currently isn’t any real sports happening to discuss. Hence, redebate issues ad-naseum until there’s something on tv worth watching and talking about.
@Humboldt… good points… then again, it isn’t like this is the first time that the Maualuga misspellings have occurred. I let it go in hopes that eventually the name Maualuga would stop appearing in the comments section. I didn’t realize that he would be inextricably linked to Brian Robiskie.
Shall we discuss Tim Couch vs. Donovan McNabb too? Sheesh.
Well obviously if the browns drafted McNabb then we would be in a much better spot then we are now….haha
A lot of holes were filled this year, on and off the field. But our secondary combined with a below average pass rush has to be addressed…..if not it will be our undoing!
Then we will be back to waiting for next year.
Is spending high draft picks on your weakest positions wise even when the positions do not generally warrant high picks? I don’t know how player acquisitions in football flow after the draft, i.e., trading does not seem as prevalent as in MLB and the NBA. I just wonder if we are getting a $600 toilet seat because we really need a toilet seat (center). Can anyone help me with this?
I would say look at Nick Mangold, who was a first round pick, and is now one of the top OL in the league. If Mack becomes that, I have no problem whatsoever.
