Alex Mack’s Learning Curve Taking Some Time
August 6, 2009Cleveland Sports: By The Numbers – #32
August 6, 2009On Sunday September 13th the Browns kick off their season against the Minnesota Vikings at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Earlier this off-season the Browns got good news when Brett Favre decided not to join the Vikes. While Brett Favre may not be the same guy who slung passes in Green Bay, if you had to choose, I think most of you would choose to face Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels or John David Booty. So, the Browns dodged that bullet in week one. They also had a chance to dodge another giant cannonball or two in the potential suspensions of Kevin and Pat Williams. As of today, it doesn’t look like the Browns (and either DA or BQ) will be so lucky.
The short version of the story is that Kevin and Pat Williams (not related) took a supplement of some kind that had an unmarked diuretic that happens to be banned by the NFL. They tested positive and were facing a four game suspension over the incident. As of yet, they haven’t served any time of those suspensions. There was a chance that the suspensions could come down and the matchup with the Browns could have been the first week of their suspension. That would have been a large (and I mean large) reprieve for the Browns’ offense, specifically the offensive line.
Now, it looks as if the lawsuit that the Williamses filed against the NFL will allow them to play the whole season before the matter is settled in court. It is great news for the players and the Minnesota Vikings who will have the two reaking havoc in the trenches all season. It is bad bad news for the Browns. But, hey, at least the Browns defense will get to face either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels instead of Brett Favre, right? Now, if we could just find a way to get Adrian Peterson suspended…

This is weird because I could have sworn that ESPN reported something on this matter a while ago that said the NFL won this suit.
Death.
Taxes.
Browns open the NFL season at home and lose.
Those are things we can be guaranteed in life.
Great, just great. Now they might go 6-10 and miss the playoffs, instead of going 7-9 and missing the playoffs.Makes me sick.
Are you kidding me!?!?! This is insane. Our season is over. I cannot believe this is happening to us again. Guess it’s time to get geared up for the Cavs.
Wait…this is the Cleveland.com comment section, right?
if 700 pounds of chub just got readded to their line, shouldnt it be “First week just got larder?”
The thing about not facing Brett Favre is that now the Browns defense will make Jackson, or Rosenfels look like a superstar QB. At least that was my opinion the past few years. We’ll see though. New season. hahaha
i know the browns will suck again, but its nice to be reading about them again and getting close to that time of year
I’ve been following this all summer and it is indeed a bad sign for the Browns. This is the best Defensive Tackle tandem in the NFL, bar none.
I just can’t help but think if MIN was playing any other team in Week 1, the suspensions would find a way to stand haha. Definitely still a game the Browns can win. Just stop Adrian Peterson. Unfortunately, that’s much easier said than done..
a bunch of sad people you all are. you guys act suprised that the browns are going to potentially do bad. if it makes you this upset stop watching the browns and wait till basketball season starts. i for one am stoked for this season, and like every other season i see us going undefeated. keep having fun everybody.
This leads us to the great debate – which is sadder, blind optimism or acceptance of reality?
acceptance is sadder. cause the blind optimism is sad from the outside perspective, acceptance of sports futility is sad for the individual and the observer.
