Camp Mangini – It’s No Picnic

large_eric-mangini529The moratorium is over folks. Your resident Tribe sycophant has lifted his personal muzzle about your Cleveland Browns. Maybe its the new regime. Maybe its my fantasy football league getting geared up again. Who knows. But i’m ready to talk some football.

Just a quick post here for you that I think you will find interesting. SI.com’s Monday Morning QB with Peter King this morning actually featured some Browns chatter. Most of it centered around the maturation of QB Brady Quinn under the Brian Daboll system. But what caught my eye was the following:

The Browns, however, were the first team I’ve been around this summer that I just didn’t get a good vibe from. The players are still feeling out Eric Mangini, and more than a few think he’s working them too hard.

You know something, I’m glad to hear it. Mangini should be pushing these guys hard. They are used to four seasons of Tri-C, Crennel Country Club, and many of these guys don’t know any different. This is reality. Hard work now pays off later. Mangini is doing his best to set the no-nonsense tone with his players. If they don’t like it, then tough. Ask Shaun Smith what he thinks.

What I am concerned about is the behind the scenes complaining, if that is indeed happening, since King is getting that “vibe” from the team. Camp is what, not even two weeks old? King is one of, if not the, most respected national football writer in the business. He isn’t one to stretch the truth. There has to be some sort of merit to it.

We will see what happens going forward.

  • Omega King

Wow, that’s solid reporting. They gave me a bad vibe. Very newsworthy.

  • biff

In all fairness though, Peter King is a bumbling idiot who waxed poetic about Phil Savage and the team prior to last year’s debacle. I’m not saying he isn’t plugged into what’s going on in the league and that it’s not likely that a player or two bent his ear about Mangini being oppressive, but I’m not too worried about what Peter King thinks. We’re talking about a man who also thinks that Norah Jones is the hottest thing since Ipods and Family Guy.

  • Swig

He isn’t one to stretch the truth.

    Hahahahahahhahahahahahahaha

  • brwnsgrl

Around this time last year, Peter King was sure the Browns would be making the playoffs. Bet the “vibe” at training camp last summer was great…

  • Creative

He isn’t one to stretch the truth.

    omg.

    is that serious?

Peter King is an awful writer who exagerates constantly, have you ever read Kissing Suzy Kolber?

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com TD

    all – its called “sarcasm.”

  • BisonDeleSightings

Perhaps Brady Quinn didn’t return Peter’s advances, hence the “bad vibe.”

  • MacNip

Once the guys hit the field and realize they are actually going to be playing with a competent coaching staff, that vibe will go away

  • Eli

TD- you forgot to use all capital letters!

  • glenn212

Who care what King thinks…He’s more hype then substance..”Vibe”..please

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com TD

    its a slow news day!

  • CPM

King should stick to keeping his nose in Favre’s nether regions. This is a guy who actually typed: “Brett Favre news: He may or may not play this year, we’ll have to wait and see.”

    Solid, solid, reporting.

  • doc

I just fell off my chair. Peter King a respected sports journalist???? There’s no bigger hack in sportwriting. The last good vibe he got was the one Brett Favre left in his rectum….

  • http://www.clevelandfrowns.com Cleveland Frowns

If only a few teams can be good, and King is getting “good vibes” from every other team but the Browns, that strikes me as a good sign in Browns Town.

  • Pittsburgh is for Man Lovers

He did mention how much he like the Moose Head Saloon in Westlake last year and that place is hella good, so he must be credible.

  • Isis

Peter King is right on one thing, the big “if” is Brian Daboll. Check the track record of rookie coordinators, particularly when attached to young coaches.

Anyone see the training camp guts on both Mangini and Rob Ryan?

  • Isis

Thank goodness for StubHub………someone from Sharon, Pa. will have the pleasure of sitting in my lower level end-zone seats for the entire first year of Mangina. After not being able to attend a game for the past two years under Crennel, it’s unfortunate that my stomach churn didn’t subside with this regime.

Get used an ironclad know-it-all gameplan with no sideline gameday adjustments. Don’t expect much in the way of blitzing……didn’t happen in NY.

  • B-bo

What, no “viva la (fill in the blank)”? I’m so disappointed. Just doesn’t seem like a true rant without it.

  • bobby

too bad we have a different D coordinator then they had in NYJ. The DC is from OAK isis, in case you didnt know.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Denny

Excuse me, I would like the moratorium to be reinstated, please.

  • MrCleaveland

It is truly, truly amazing how many times some people don’t recognize obvious sarcasm.

And I’m not talking about your average Kucinich voter, I’m talking about relatively intelligent people who ought to know better.

    Just amazing.

  • TampaBrett

Something needs photoshopped in his hands.

  • Ben

Wondering what will happen when he names Ratliff the starter…on a side note what if Ratliff wins the job? Is the way to solve the DA/Quinn nonsense admit that they both may stink.

  • bobby

haha.. i like the way you think ben.

  • matt

gosh Isis….the browns are really going to miss having you in the stands this year. you seem to be just the type of person that always makes the day of the lucky fan sitting next to you.

with your incredible ideas on management and game planning, its puzzling how no team has recruited you to be the next general manager or coach…..or even scout for that matter……

  • JM

I’m sorry I didn’t football was supposed to be easy. My God I hope this team is motivated to win a few this year. Peter King can go back to sleeping outside Favre’s house now.

  • DK

Isis not being at games will obviously lead to an 0-16 record. book it.

  • WTPFO

    Leon Powe = Cavalier

  • http://whiskyrebellion.com Battles

I like King’s writing, but I agree with brwnsgrl on this one.

  • Jay

So, if I’m reading correctly, this will be the third straight year Isis will not be attending a Browns Game. I’m assuming (which could land me in trouble) that you are a season ticket holder. If you are, I emplore you to give up your PSL and tickets to a true fan who will not sit at home just because he doesn’t like the coaching regime. Viva La Dawg Pound indeed!

@ MrCleaveland: LMAO @ “And I’m not talking about your average Kucinich voter”

  • Isis

Here’s what Crybaby DA did in being flagged for throwing the ball after getting sacked by Shaun, and what he said:

    I repeat, leadership?

If you look through the trees, Isis, you might see the forest.

  • LaundroMat

I see at least three comments insinuating that Peter King is homosexual, and then bashing him for it. Is this consistent with the professed family-friendly ethos of this site?

  • ben

@33: No. There are three comments insinuating Peter King is homosexual, and then bashing Peter King for being Peter King.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Denny

@LM – I’m not seeing what you’re seeing in the comments. Two insinuating, maybe – but that’s it.

If you want to talk about it more hit me with an email.

  • LaundroMat

Comments 7, 12, 13: the substance of the comments seeming to be that we shouldn’t expect substantive journalism from King because he’s the kind of guy (i.e., homosexual) who’s (amorously) obsessed with Quinn and Favre. Maybe comment 34 actually puts it more precisely, but the anti-homosexual sentiment in the aforementioned comments is clear enough.

I just think that if this site wants to maintain its integrity as a “family-friendly” site, it would be more proactive regarding this sort of comment. Even if you don’t think there’s anything anti-homosexual in 12 and 13, surely mention of Favre’s nether regions and King’s rectum ought to raise some kind of red flag in terms of family-friendliness, right?

  • AJ

Peter King is a bad sports writer. He is completely unprofessional, and spends more time talking about how great his life is than anything pertaining to the NFL. If you read his Monday Morning Quarterback, you will know what I mean. He loves himself a little too much for my taste, and I don’t really consider him to be a credible source. He picks favorites (see: Favre, Brett) and is completely biased. I wouldn’t put too much thought into the “bad vibe” comment; there is probably some truth to what he says, but remember that he only shadowed the Browns for two days. Everyone knows that Mangini pushes his players; naturally, players that are used to being pampered are going to be in for a rude awakening. King’s knee-jerk opinion shouldn’t carry any weight.

    Just get rid of Wedge.

  • paulbip

“Most of it centered around”. Bad english. You can’t center around anything. You should have said “Most of it revolved around”.
