Surprise! Bud Shaw is anti-New Media! “The attraction of new media to sports figures is varied, but one frequently cited is that it allows them to control the message. No middle man (the media). No editing. No misinterpretations. The irony is that what some have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt is that what they really need to stop embarrassing themselves is less exposure and more time to think about what they’re going to say.” [Bud Shaw/Plain Dealer]

The 2010 rotation: more intriguing than disappointing? “You would hope tonight’s start would finally put to rest the annoying suggestion that [Aaron] Laffey belongs in the bullpen. Aaron went eight innings on 112 pitches, and even struck out five. He’s been able to get hitters out the third and fourth time through the order, a step up from some pitchers currently in the rotation.” [Ryan/Let's Go Tribe]

Buckeye football players help fight CMT: “About 60 Ohio State players turned out for the event as fans mingled, with freshman receiver Duron Carter emerging as the winner of the 16-player bracketed showdown. [Terrelle] Pryor, who said he had a migraine headache, was obviously into the game early on but eventually dropped out because he wasn’t feeling well. He answered only one question related to football or the start of preseason camp on Sunday.” [Doug Lesmerises/Plain Dealer]

The Red Sox must not feel very confident about the depth in their rotation. According to a report by FOXSports.com, Boston has signed Paul Byrd to a minor-league deal for the rest of the season. Byrd, who the Red Sox acquired from Cleveland for the stretch run last season, has not pitched at all this year, and according to the report will need time to get back into game shape. It’s unlikely he will be ready for the major leagues before September. [Andrew Johnson/MLB FanHouse]
