The AP’s Tom Withers took time to document the last few weeks of LeBron James, catching up with him while in Akron for the MTAG tour as well as his Bike-a-thon.
If you are even a casual fan of the NBA, you are likely aware of the majority of the article. LeBron’s ties to Akron. His allegiance to his friends and family. His goals of becoming a “global icon.” I mean, James teamed up with Buzz Bissinger to discuss the exact same topics, and it is all encompassed by a documentary.
But as you make your way through the RockKing-eque word count, you find yourself taking away two of LBJ’s latest quotes.
On the addition of Shaquille O’Neal:
“I’m so excited about Shaq,” James said. “Something I haven’t had in my career is a dominant force in the paint, a guy I can go to and he’s going to get us something good. He’s the most dominant force to ever play the game, and to have him on my team, I’m humbled.”
And, of course, the summer of 2010:
“I’m excited about the upcoming season and I have never given any indication that I’m leaving Cleveland,” he said. “I’ve been happy with what the franchise has done for me and my family. It’s been great. Hopefully everything goes right and hopefully I can sign a big contract to stay in Cleveland.”
Obviously, nothing outrageous in terms of a James quote. However, much was made about a quote from a week ago when James mentioned that he would still love his hometown even if his career were to lead him elsewhere. But I would not hold my breath in anticipation of Rachel Nichols reporting this latest piece.
The crazy thing is, with all of the LeBron James news that we have had during this offseason with his tours, books, movies and the like, it is next year that is the “Summer of LeBron.” Those of you that feel a bit of saturation now? You haven’t seen anything yet…
