September 13, 2009Browns Bullet Points: Week 1 Loss to Favre and Vikings

This interruption, brought to you by Kanye West: “Is it me, or is Ohio State just really not that good? The D seems solid — except when getting run over by Navy’s option attack… or Joe McKnight. But the offense is pedestrian. And if OSU isn’t that good, then USC’s eked win over them doesn’t really speak that highly of the Trojans this season, either. But watch the AP voters give USC all sorts of credit for “gutting it out,” rather than “not playing all that well against a good-but-not-great team.” (I’m with everyone else: Terrelle Pryor is absolutely wasted talent under Jim Tressel. “Turning platinum into pennies,” Spencer Hall called it. I wonder if Pryor is regretting his decision to go to Ohio State. I would be.)” [Dan Shanoff]

Like a white guy dancing: “I’m not gonna say the way the QB competition was structured played into this performance, but I will say that how the QB competition played out did. If one of the two had grabbed it early on, there’s a fairly good chance we wouldn’t have seen the total lack of rhythm and flow in the offense. It was almost like the offense was sitting there saying, “OK, Brady’s had one drive, time for DA, right?” Again, this is on Quinn — and Derek Anderson as well — for not grabbing the job by the balls early on.” [John Taylor/The OBR – S/R]

It’s Ohio. Are we ever comfortable? “While [Matt] Barkley was maintaining his poise, [Terrelle] Pryor took a costly sack that pushed Ohio State out of field-goal range. Then, after USC took the lead with just over a minute left, Pryor was sacked for an 18-yard loss that grew uglier when he was flagged for intentional grounding. Breathtaking as his skills are, Pryor never gives Ohio State fans a sense of comfort. Because he is so inconsistent, they have no idea what to expect.” [Jay Mariotti/FanHouse]

That pic of Flo throwing a pitch kind of scares me.
I’d hit that.
The pitch I mean.
I lol’d at the Kanye quote, well done. I needed it this crappy Monday morning.
From watching Quinn yesterday, I get the feeling that a lot of the problems were related to rhythm….however, are our receivers SO BAD that nobody can get open? It seemed like Quinn had no one to throw to the whole game.
Quinn is essentially a rookie given he didn’t play (but for 3 starts) his first few years. The best (check Elway, John’s rookie year) rookie QB’s go through significant growing pains in learning NFL defenses real-time, as well as getting rhythm with receivers. Give the kid his fair time and shot; there are far more issues on this team to discuss weekly-please.
Omega King (above): dead on.
Linking to Mariotti and Shanoff? What did we do to deserve this?
“What did we do to deserve this?”
Lost a must-win football game. That’ll usually do it 🙂
when he was flagged for intentional grounding.
The right corner blitzed on the play and the receiver (not sure who) was the only player on the right side of the field…What was worse was the receiver tipped off that he was blitzing and Prior nodded.
Aside from his six yard hail mary’s that he throws, Prior is just not that good.
I think we should start putting Vegas odds on whether Pryor is the starter next season. He could probably start working on his receiving skills and do himself more good in the long run.
Isis is right. Quinn is essentially a rookie. People will point to Palmer, Flacco, Big Ben, etc. But they are not the norm people. Get over it.
Quinn did some things that looked really good. He was incredibly mobile against one of the best front 7’s in the game. He demonstrated he has arm strength to spare. And I think he generally looked poised.
Some things were bad – the INT and the Fumble (which was particularly bad). I also think people need to get off the “Check down” thing. The Vikings also have one of the best secondaries in the NFL.
There are going to be growing pains with Quinn. There are with all new QBs. Let it play out. DA-apologists, I’m sorry he didn’t win the competition. I’m sorry he can only throw the deep ball. I’m sorry he has no presence on the field. I’m sorry he is a statue in the pocket. I’m sorry he has no touch on anything under 50 yards. And I’m sorry he trips over his own feet at the line of scrimmage. His time is over, and you’ll just have to get used to that.
If Quinn isn’t our guy, we get ready for McCoy/Bradford/etc. It’s pretty much that simple.
Quinn was terrible, he was in non stop panic mode as soon as he took a snap. It looked like he was riverdancing his feet were so jumpy in the pocket. I know the Vikings are a good defensive team, but that was just really pathetic quarterback play. Quinn’s had enough time in the NFL that he shouldn’t be looking like that. The backwards fumble was just a joke. Our defense was doing a good job containing but they just lost heart watching our offense look offensive. Brady’s going to have to really step up next week and show he’s not just a preseason player. Here’s hoping for some better results.
The bullet point piece should pop up any second now… 🙂
Pryor could put up huge numbers in a wide-open spread offense, but he wants to be a quarterback in the NFL, so even though there are a lot of growing pains right now, this is best for him in the long-run. If it doesn’t work out, he can be turned into a WR in the NFL, but he could still develop into a good throwing quarterback.
@ # 13 – I don’t care if he works out in the NFL. I want him to succeed at OSU, playing football that I actually care about.
@14 then you should also be rooting for him to change positions, right?
Pryor is not going to be a NFL quarterback…
Craig – not necessarily. If he can improve and become a pocket passer, that’s fine. If he’d best suit the team elsewhere, that’s fine – but I’m pretty sure it’d be sour grapes the rest of his time in Cbus if he switched spots. He’s got to grow a lot as a QB. It happened with Troy Smith, it can happen with him. It’ll just be brutal to watch in the mean time.
#14- I agree, I care about OSU football more than pro football, but Terrelle Pryor becoming an NFL-caliber QB could only be good for OSU. I think that it shouldn’t be forced on him at the expense of the team, but he should work to develop as a passer.
#15- I want Pryor to be a QB. With his speed and measurables, I want the ball in his hands every play. As badly as he played for a lot of the game, he did hit on long passes to Posey and Sanzenbacher and had a great run to convert the 3rd and 15. If he learns to go through his progressions and not lock on one man, he’ll be very good since he can buy so much time with his feet.
If Pryor stays for his senior year, I think he can be an NFL quarterback.
Whats it going to take to stop seeing Mariotti links here. That guy should just stop writing and stick to Around the Horn. His articles are nothing more then fluffed up garbage.
