October 12, 2009“A Win is a Win”
October 12, 2009With Braylon Edwards making his Jets debut this evening, it is interesting to note that there were reportedly other teams looking at the wide receiver in the trade market before things went down. One of which is the team that he will be taking on tonight in the Miami Dolphins.
In a recent piece within the Miami Herald, reportedly the ‘Phins were aware of Edwards’ availability. This goes to show that the deal that was consumated last week was 1) not a spur of the moment trade and 2) was not focused solely around the alleged assault that took place a week ago yesterday. As much as we would all like to think that LeBron James traded away Braylon Edwards, it just isn’t the case.
But what led to Miami – a team in dire need of a top flight receiver – pass up on a guy with boat loads of talent that was being sold at a discount?
His attitude.
The Dolphins decided adding Edwards could subtract from the team even as they were trying to add. In other words, adding him might have brought more talent into the locker room, but also might have ruined some team chemistry or caused some internal issues they didn’t want. […]
Yes, he can be dominant in flashes. Yes, he has the size and speed to be elite. But he can also drop the football in crucial situations and, in fact, is tied for the NFL lead in drops over the past four seasons.
And the dude’s temperamental nature is not necessarily a good thing.
I would also add in the fact that the Dolphins are 1-3 and are facing a Jets team that has one loss on the season. Staring at 1-4 and being in a very tough division is not a place to be if you would have to trade away draft selections to acquire said receiver.
But it also goes to show that Edwards’ temper, attitude and occasional dropped passes were not ignored by potential suitors.
You can bet that many of Browns fans will be tuning in tonight to see what Edwards can do on the Jets with only a few days of work under his belt. The Dolphins, however, will have an even better seat as they find out if the move (or lack thereof) was more beneficial. If Vegas is any indication, it appears that the ‘Phins may have made the better decision.

“Last Sunday, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and wide receiver Braylon Edwards had some on-field disagreements. Those carried over to the team’s meeting room on Monday, when, at one point, Edwards verbally chastised Anderson and used a choice expression to get across his point. Two days later, Edwards was dealt to New York and, though he is too professional to publicly admit it, no one could have been any happier about the deal than Anderson, who had lost all his mojo with Edwards. In fact, it was no coincidence that the Browns’ top wide receiver last week was rookie Mohamed Massaquoi. Anderson and Massaquoi had been working 30 minutes together after practice every day and had developed the kind of rapport that Anderson and Edwards once had.”
That cohesiveness with Massaquoi sure showed up yesterday
#2 – what are you talking about? Massaquoi had nearly 70% of our receiving yardage yesterday. Any receiver would kill for that
@ # 3 — Tell me you’re using irony…please…
I can’t see Edwards playing for a Parcells-run organization.
But then I could never really see Parcells coaching the Cowboys and dealing with Jerry Jones–but he did ( for a while).
so did cleveland…no…they did pass TO edwards!
Mary Kay wrote that the Dolphins almost traded Ronnie Browns for Braylon. That would have been the best move of the century for the browns if they couldve got that through. Dang.
Braylon is good. We made a poop.
The way they talked about braylon tonight was as though he was the 2nd coming of Jerry Rice. OF COURSE YOU LOVE HIM MATT MILLEN! Thanks for the startling insight. Didn’t know you felt that way about WRs. I have assumed he would do better in NY since I first heard the trade happened. Why shouldn’t he? He has to prove he is not just a prima donna. He has to prove it was Cleveland and not Braylon. He only cares about himself. He was trying tonight. Ladies and Gentleman that was Braylon Edwards when he just gives effort. He ran crisp routes. He caught the throws just like it reads in the job description of his profession as an NFL receiver. Did he have an illegal formation penalty or any other bevy of bonehead mistakes? Watching the game I had my early moment of laughter acknowledging that once again this could only happen to a Browns fan. And then I got angry. I am still angry. I stared at the tv with my stomach in knots as he looked like a top flight NFL WR. I feel this way and when my friends asked what I thought of the move my response was “I’d have traded him for a ham sandwhich”. But never the less it hurt to watch that idiot tonight. And what really sucks is frankly, I am old enough to know better but young enough to pretend and I’ll never stop caring as much as I actually think doing so would improve the quality of my life. I will always sit there watching every play of every game and reading every person in the free world’s take before and after. This is just another stupid chapter in the stupid book of Cleveland sports. We just deserve better damnit.
Wow … the drama !!!
