While We’re Waiting… Stephen Jackson Rumors, Grading Brian Daboll, and “Milicic in Cleats”

stephenjackson11While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.

Before he was named head coach of the Cavaliers in 2005, Mike Brown twice had the honor of coaching Stephen Jackson: once as an assistant with the Pacers, and before that, as an assistant with the Spurs. Jackson’s time in Indiana wasn’t exactly that of a model citizen, but he was fine in San Antonio, and even got himself a ring as a contributor to the Spurs’ championship in 2003. Maybe Brown, based on this past experience, sees something in Jackson that at this point, most of the rest of us do not.” [Brett Pollakoff/NBA FanHouse]

Um…Kyle Orton, 6-0. [Cecilio Guante]

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has been under scrutiny due to the lack of offense and imagination displayed by the offense. As a unit, the failure to execute on a consistent basis has only compounded the swirling belief the coach is not quite ready for primetime. In the one game against Cincinnati in which the offense displayed the ability to execute on a moderate basis, the Browns were competitive. During the other five contests, the Browns’ offense has been as ineffective as any in the league.” [Lane Adkins/The OBR - S/R]

“In the aftermath of Saturday’s not-that-close 26-18 loss to the Boilermakers, the Buckeyes are turning on golden child Terrelle Pryor after his drama-queen recruitment. The Ohio State internets took to calling Pryor “Lebron in Cleats,” or LiC, this offseason. How’s that working out? One guy on Eleven Warriors has a constant mantra: “only 2 1/2 years left.” Suggestions to change the nickname to JiC, or “Juice in Columbus,” are many, and the proprietor of We Will Always Have Tempe has another suggestion: “Milicic-In-Cleats.” [Brian Cook/The Sporting Blog]

The Jackson rumors need to die. Any trade involving Z that doesn’t send us a big man in return is insane. Having Z coming off the bench with the second unit is what is going to make this team better than a lot of other teams this year.

  • Chris

“Maybe Brown, based on this past experience, sees something in Jackson that at this point, most of the rest of us do not.”

Unfortunately, he doesn’t appear to see that gaudy contract that he carries through sometime near 2025.

    Wrong side of 30? Check.
    Incredibly bad contract? Check.
Attitude problems with current team? Check.

    Again, no thank you.

Um…Kyle Orton’s defense giving up 3 pts combined in the second half of their first 6 games = 6-0. Why didn’t we go after Brian Dawkins again? oh yea- he didn’t play for the jets, that’s right. Long live the jets castoffs!!!

  • Nullster

I’ll take the Jackson Rumors over any speculation of Larry Hughes getting cut and then signing with the Cavs (thank you very much Bulls.com, sorry you got screwed on that trade)

  • Jack

Was this an Isis concession? He’s going to be sooo happy to see the words “Brian Daboll” in a post title!

  • ben

The reason I love Danny Ferry (besides the fact that his bald head is so sexy) is b/c he won’t make this Jackson move unless half of the Cavs roster dies of swine flu.

  • JK

@4 Umm… Dawkins is hurt. Been hurt pretty much all year and was re injured last night. Not sure how he could have helped us.

  • Biff

I’m not one for trading for atrocious contracts but lets not get carried away and act like Stephen Jackson wouldn’t be awesome on this team. He would be a huge upgrade on a team that might still need one final piece to get over the hump.

I’m not advocating a trade, especially one that would dump Z without a wink wink buyout. But come on: dont’ act like Stephen Jackson wouldn’t be a nice addition.

  • Isis

What’s absolutely amazing is that there is not a single comment here in regards to Brian Daboll. Just incredible. Truly.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/ Rick

We were fairly confident you’d be handling that Isis.

Brian Daboll is a green coach. I think everyone agrees that hiring a more experienced coordinator would have been preferable. Daboll has had some growing pains to be sure. They came to a head in his worst performance of the year in Buffalo which ironically is where the Browns won the game.

Other than that, I think Daboll and the rest have been pretty good about trying different things to try and get this team going. Sometimes it is difficult to tell what is bad play-calling and what is bad execution. We have a mix of both to be sure.

Even recognizing Daboll’s bad moments, I have a tough time blaming him for the drops, the bad execution on screens and the general ineffectiveness of the right side of the offensive line.

This is where I come back to people looking for black and white answers in a world full of grey. My stance on Daboll is that he is young and inexperienced. The Browns could have served themselves well to hire an experienced veteran. They didn’t. Daboll has had horrible moments and one really horrendous game in Buffalo. The rest of the time I think it has been a lot of bad execution too. Daboll has at least developed different gameplans from week to week unlike anybody that Crennel had on staff.

Knowing that he is here now and isn’t going to get fired in-season or even probably next season, I am looking/hoping for positive developments. I think his willingness to run the wildcat this week in Pittsburgh was positive. Then again, I don’t know if Daboll is responsible for the split in workload between J. Lewis and Harrison. I question the personnel a lot, but I think that is probably Mangini not Daboll to a large extent.

    Biff:

I don’t think he’d be awesome at all. He’s a 2 or a 3. So do we start him ahead of Parker? Okay. So Parker is 2nd string. What do we do with Gibson? Do we have Jackson play a 3 to spell LeBron? Okay, then what do we do with Moon? I really don’t think he adds anything that the Cavs don’t already have. Of course by letting Z go, we will be GIVING UP on a major advantage we have with matching Z up with other teams’ 2nd center. From everything I’ve read, GS isn’t looking to dump salary. They want a big man and they wouldn’t be letting Z go via a buyout.

  • Jeremy

Isis I think that bashing the Browns is getting old. They stink, we all know that. We can blame many, many things on why they stink. Daboll is one of them, but being a rookie OC with a team that trades away the only offensive threats we had puts an even bigger handcuff on the guy. I am not saying, however, that I think Daboll would be able to do anything with that talent. I guess I am happy that they got something for those guys, because they were walking the first chance they got(can’t blame them btw). This is what we mean by “patience” which you are so proudly and sarcastically to remind us of. We have to give this regime a chance, not because we all wanted them here, but because we have no other choice. I think we would rather talk about the Cavs because we are getting excited about the season, and they make us happy.

I don’t know if a Pryor/Darko comparison is valid. It’s not like OSU picked Pryor over some other, equally hyped players (ie, taking Darko over Wade, Bosh, Carmelo, etc.). Pryor seems like a guy who dominates weak competition (in high school), but just can’t adjust to the higher level of competition at the next level. Call him Bogut in cleats?

  • Biff

@13, I said I wouldn’t do it without a wink wink with Z. As for where he would play, when you have a guy like Lebron who can play 4 positions and guys like West and Parker who can play multiple backcourt positions, it’s not that difficult to find a place to play tall, athletic, talented backcourt guys.

As for where to put Gibson, I think parked at the end of the bench is a nice spot.

  • Matthew R

“What do we do with Gibson” as an argument *against* getting Stephen Jackson is just nuts. I think we know what we’ve got with Boobie and I’ll take Stephen Jackson all day long over him.

The great thing about being a Cavs fan right now is that we can pretty much completely trust Ferry to do the right thing here and not overpay for Jackson. They’ll wait out GS and if it turns out they can pick him up for a song, they’ll do it, and if not, move on secure with the (totally awesome) roster they already have.

Jackson is a warrior and an intimidator, a stud defender on the wing that can run an offense, and would be another guy that’s going to let *us* be the ones creating matchup problems with our huge guards this season, instead of the other way around.

I will say, though, that I think the odds of the Cavs actually getting him are less than 50/50. I think it’d take more than a Z buyout to get it done, and other than that (and of course Boobie) I don’t think there’s much on the roster Ferry is willing to give up.

NBA somewhat secret GM rule: You never trade away a big to get a little. Never.

  • Biff

NBA somewhat secret GM rule #2: Always trade an older, less-talented guy for a younger, more-talented guy.

This completely ignores the salary issue and the “goodwill issue” so I’m not advoctating that this deal get done. I’m just arguing talent and from a talent perspective, you’d do this deal in a cocaine heartbeat.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com RockKing

@18: People always say that, but it’s not true whatsoever. The Cavs traded Joe Smith to get Mo Williams.

    Boom, roasted.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com RockKing

And Biff is absolutely right. The terms of the contract are always a bigger concern than trading size. Besides, you mean to tell me it would be stupid of the Cavs to trade, say, Varejao for CP3?

If the deal makes you a better team, and the contract in the future is something you’re ok with, then you make the trade.
