November 14, 2009Cavaliers Preview Game #10: Jazz at Cavs (Update – Shaq Out)
November 14, 2009The Iowa Hawkeyes come into the Horseshoe after suffering their first loss of the season to the Northwestern Wildcats at home last weekend. During that disastrous game for the Hawkeyes, they also lost their starting Quarterback for at least the rest of the regular season – local and former Mentor Lake Catholic QB Ricky Stanzi. Redshirt freshman James Vandenberg takes over the offense. The Hawkeye offense had been struggling the past few weeks with Stanzi and will surely find it difficult to score this afternoon against a stout Buckeye defense which is really clicking coming into this game.
The winner of this game will head to the Rose Bowl so the stakes are about as high as they come for a regular season Big 10 game. If the Buckeyes win, it will be their 5th straight Big 10 title but their first Rose Bowl appearance in 13 years. With the loss of their starting QB, the Hawkeyes come in as heavy underdogs. The line opened at 13.5 and is up to as much as 17 points in most places. It’s a beautiful day outside but join us in the comments this afternoon for the game of the year in the Big 10 leading into the Cavs matchup tonight.

If OSU doesnt win this game, i predict riots in cbus. Or atleast i hope they would riot cause i would
That little Iowa superfan child they just showed was frightening
OSU o-line getting handled thus far and Vandenberg is much better than expected.
My internet is going far too slowly to stream. I don’t want to internet-follow a game. I am sad :[
Also, Iowa WR Trey Stross from Avon Lake straight dropped at TD. Bucks were lucky to hold them to 3
rousing Seven Nation Army chant going on right now Denny, sad you are not able to see it
I had a feeling that the 17 point spread was a bit much – the Bucks better get in the end zone here to make it a little less interesting.
I miss Aaron Pettrey. This is way to close for my comfort.
If they lose this game it’s on tressel, plain and simple. The playcalling in the 4th has been atrocious.
Playcalling almost always is atrocious
Oh we’re up 1 score? lets run up the middle 3 times and punt
Can’t stand it
At least ferentz returned the favor by playing for ot instead of taking a shot to win it.
OMG FIRE TRESSEL ALL HE’S DONE IS GET THE BUCKS TO THE ROSE BOWL!
ROSE BOWL? MORE LIKE HOSE SKOAL. NO MORE CONSERVATIVE PLAYCALLS GET ME BRIAN KELLY!!!
Morons.
Hose Skoal?
Agree. with #12…….
Do you want sexy or wins? Tressel will open the O when Pryor proves he can handle it ala Troy Smith.
This game would not have been that close without a kick-off return TD and and an off-sides call on a interception TD for defense
I’m glad the team made the Rose Bowl and I think they’ve had a great season, but at some point I think they need to let Pryor take over a little more. And I’m not suggesting that they start putting up 40-50 passes a game or anything, because the ground attack is deadly right now. But where are the play-action passes? We’re daring teams to crowd the box, but then we’re not making them pay for it.
Also, where are the medium-range passes? Its like they only throw 2-3 yard passes or passes of more than 50 yards. I just can’t figure out how a guy can complete 14 passes for less than 100 yards. I think Pryor is finally figuring out how to play better and not make mistakes, but let’s see a little more imagination from Tressel.
Also to your point #14, this game could have swung the other way if not for #86 on Iowa’s failure to make a single big catch. Or if Iowa had made that chip shot FG. So its kind of silly to point to little things that if they had gone the other way, that would have changed the game. This game was close because it was two good teams who were well matched. But Ohio State won because they were the better team.
@Denny – I never said that Tressel should be fired. I’m a big Tressel advocate generally. I just thought down the stretch of this game, including in OT, he was overly conservative and started playing not to lose. I don’t think Pryor should be chucking it up constantly, but run up the middle three times doesn’t work either.
It’s a nice win and it will be nice to see the boys out in Pasadena for a change.
Now hopefully they can take care of business in Ann Arbor.
Am I the only one who frankly doesn’t care about the bowl? I guess I always want them to win, but if we beat Michigan, I really could care less. The funny thing is, I think most Buckeye fans thought this way until the vest actually got us playing in Bowls that mattered. So which would you rather have, a coach who wins a lot, wins some bowls, loses to Michigan, or Tressel? I’ll take Tressel. I too wish the play calling was less conservative, but a tiger can’t change it stripes.
P.S. My personal belief is that Tressel has a side deal with the OSU heart hospital, and he knows that the stress he causes created patients which he gets a kick back on. The championship season first made me think this, and he has cemented it since then.
Tressel is the best thing to happen to Ohio State, since…….Woody!
He is a V-good football coach, he teaches our kids to have pride and respect for themselves and others….he holds them to high academic standards….he makes them and us have pride in OSU football agian….an example is Charlie Tuna making his players go to his band for their alamater too… He doesnt even know the words!!!!
