The 5-Hole: Blue Jackets News and Notes – 12/22/09
December 22, 2009While We’re Waiting… Delonte’s Fight and the Future of Jon Gruden and Brady Quinn
December 23, 2009With the news that Brady Quinn is going to miss the final two games of the regular season, former Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson will once again get the starting nod under center. The beareded one will have two games to rectify what was essentially a disaster performance in 2009 with the sole goal of increasing his trade value in the upcoming offseason.
Mike Holmgren’s recent addition to the Browns front office will undoubtedly lead to change. While the future of Eric Mangini and Brady Quinn is fairly uncertain at this stage, the fact that Anderson is due a $2 million roster bonus next season all but guarantees that those No. 3 jerseys are about to become throwbacks come 2010.
Thankfully, Anderson has remained positivethrough the entire process. From the roller coaster ride at the beginning of the season to getting inserted only a handful of games in, and then getting pulled one final time, Anderson feels that this next two contests could offer up some opportunities for some redemption.
“I am excited about the opportunity,” said Anderson. “[We have] obviously been doing some good things. [I’m going to] try to step in and continue to win games. I am way past [being benched],” Anderson continued. “I have no excuse for anything. Obviously, I understood we all had to play better, I had to play better. It was a decision Eric (Mangini) made. I tried to get better in practice, continue to have fun and be a positive presence with my teammates.”
While Brady Quinn’s numbers through the air have left a lot to be desired, it is Anderson’s arm that has gotten him to this point in his career. Unfortunately, following a strong 2007 season, Anderson has been plagued by poor decisions that have often lead to turnovers. One can surmise that Anderson is looking forward to similar protection from the offensive line that Quinn has seen over the past two games – Anderson was often rushed and found himself forcing passes into tight coverage.
In six games this season, Anderson has a completion percentage of 42.9, a passer rating of 36.2 and two touchdowns (as well as two rushing TDs) to go with nine interceptions.

“Operation Increase Derek Anderson’s Trade Value”
Step 1) Do not let him play
Step 2) Accept whatever is offered for him
Step 3) Profit?
So what, are we talking a 4th rounder? Maybe a 3rd? What can we honestly expect to get from our former Pro-Bowler?
What if this was Holmgren’s first order of business, to let DA play so that we can get rid of him?
Then Charlie Weis will be hired as OC, and Quinn will have 2 weeks of rest before heading into the off season.
With Russell looking like he might start on Suday, we have quite a QB Battle on our hands. What’s the over/under on picks in this game? Six? Seven?
Suday? How bout Sunday
Tom Cruise starred in this operation… it was called MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!
(Buh dum – SPLASH)
Ah Cha cha cha!
Charlie Frye! Derek Anderson! Raiders-Browns on CBS!
NBC must be sick that they didn’t flex this classic game to the Sunday night schedule.
Maybe we could trade with the Raiders mid-game and get Frye back 😉
A 3rd rounder TBrown? Have you lost your mind? I’m not sure you could trade him for a bag of footballs at this point given his current contract. It’s more likely he’ll be cut and then sign elsewhere for close to the league minimum I would think.
It’s not possible to increase his trade value. He belongs in the CFL. I hear the Alouettes are looking for a big armed qb who smiles when he tosses 4 interceptions and costs his team a playoff spot.
By the way….can we have a moratorium on the word opportunities?
What? Where are all the links to all of your previous posts? Wait, where am I again?
Cleveland vs. Detroit and Cleveland vs. Kansas City; two games that were projected to be a bunch of butt and wound up being two of the most exciting games of the year.
Oakland vs. Cleveland; Russell vs. Anderson.. for the three-peat? One can hope.
The ultimate irony would be if we could somehow trade him to Tampa Bay since they desperately need something that resembles a QB. DA and K2 together again!
We will get nothing better than a 6th rounder. I say we run Cribbs out of the wild dawg all game
Can’t wait to see Frye vs. DA. ahahaha
I guess Frye suffered a concussion during the Broncos game, so his status is questionable for Sunday. With the way the NFL is dealing with concussions now, my money is on a DA/Russell matchup. Fans in Oakland are as thrilled with another Russell start as we are with another DA start.
Scott, Derek never needed a big pass rush as an excuse to throw into double coverage.
All right, big fella, here we go again! Go on, talk about having “fun” out there, and sling that ball around! Good times …
Anyway, this is the time of year where a bad team’s defense maybe doesn’t mind a little arm tackling here or taking a play off there. Maybe he’ll throw for 300 and Al Davis will wake up from his nap and offer up a 4th rounder in 2011. If not, who else would trade for a guy with a million dollar arm, ten cent head and has been regressing for 2 years.
Yeah, a 3rd would be a bit of a pipe dream, wouldn’t it? Although, Oakland needs a new QB, right? One with a big arm? I mean, maybe we can convince Al Davis that the whole Pro Bowl season wasn’t a fluke?
Holy crap, I am talking myself into this. DA, go play lights out on Sunday so we can trade you to Oakland.
@Harv 21
This could happen. I am almost sure this could happen.
All in favor of putting DaBoll under center? (counting hands) “You cant vote Derek”
And BTW, Brady may look buff but ain’t exactly an iron man out there. Not a good ratio of starts to missing games due to injury. Any word on exactly what his injury is? Oh, never mind, what was I thinking. Don’t want to give the Raiders an edge.
How does one increase DA’s trade value by playing him? I would expect that playing him would lower his value — that is, if it can get any lower.
Meanwhile, the TV blackout watch is under way. I thought that two straight wins might rev up the ticket buyers and the last two games would be televised here. But who can get excited about DA? Ouch.
This is the way it will go…because it’s the Browns:
DA is going to play lights out in his starts, giving the organization just enough reason to feel uncertain about what they should do at QB going into the offseason.
We can’t trade Anderson to Oakland unless he runs a sub-4.4 40yd dash.
Merry Christmas to us! Finally, we get to see a real quarterback under center…
Jack, I think you forgot to capitalize.
I mean, I was hoping to get people a little more fired up. Way too much agreement round these parts lately.
Happy Holidays!
In all seriousness, I expect Anderson to play well in the season’s last two weeks.
Remember, this has been a different team since the bye week. That’s when Mangini inserted Stuckey and the non-Robert Royal tight ends into the game plan, and it ended up being a big help to the passing game. There’s also the new running backs. That should all help D.A.
Brady got his ankle rolled under a defensive guy on the play he ran up the sideline.. it looked like a roll.. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he broke a bone in there.
Anderson is reminding me a lot of the football version of laura Hughes, can we start calling him derika?
I just threw up in my mouth.
DA vs FRYE
ON PAPER VIEW!
AHHA LOL!
I have a thought on Quinn. Maybe this has been brought up before on here, but I haven’t seen it. The statement has been made that there are concerns with Quinn’s accuracy. Is it possible that his muscles are just too big and are negatively impacting his throwing motion, the flexibility in his arm, or just getting in the way? It seems to me that one thing most elite quarterbacks share is NOT their totally jacked up biceps. Maybe Holmgren should ask him to cut back a bit on the muscle building and to focus more on muscle toning and conditioning?
Glaumdawg-
I’m going to go ahead and just pretend that you did not suggest that Brady reduce his dreaminess.
I totally think that DA will play lights out. This is what he has done all along. Meaningless games, no pressure, he excels. Throw in a little importance or stress and BOOM he plays like he doesnt know what color jersey his teammates are. We can all point to the Bengals game, but heck, look at this year when he needed to prove that he deserved a start. Now BQ is on the IR and we are praying for a 4 or 5 win season. No chances of playoffs. Hmm, I think I need DA in my fantasy football superbowl…
(Ok, just kidding on that last part)
FORTY TWO POINT NINE!! lets just let that sink in for a spell folks…..toilet is to the left folks
