January 7, 2010Tom Heckert Visits Cleveland, Cancels Seattle Trip
January 7, 2010ESPN is reporting, per a source, that Eric Mangini and staff will be retained for the 2010 season.
The GM search will continue as Seattles Will Lewis is reportedly heading into town tomorrow.
Rejoice!
From Mike Holmgren:
“I’m happy to announce that Eric Mangini will return as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2010. Over the past few weeks Eric and I have had a chance to talk on a number of occasions including our meetings over the last two days. I was able to gain some tremendous insight into his thought process and philosophies, and came away from our meetings very impressed. In my opinion, Eric has gained the respect and admiration of players, coaches and others in the organization, and with him continuing to lead the team I feel that we are headed in the right direction. Working together, our goal is to build on the strong tradition of this franchise and help get the Browns back to the playoffs.”
And…From Eric Mangini:
“I want to thank Mike for the opportunity to not only meet with him and share my thoughts and vision on what it takes to lead a team, but also to continue what we started here. I believe we made some real, tangible progress throughout the course of the season, culminating with wins in our final four games. I feel as though the culture and mindset that we established this year have laid the foundation for success in 2010 and beyond, and I’m looking forward to working with Mike and a general manager in making this happen.”

Dom and I delived the Walrus as we promised, when I can we expect our next mission?

This isn’t surprising. Look at it this way. If the browns suck next year, Holmgren has a scapegoat. If he had fired Mangini, he would have all the responsibility on his shoulders. It makes sense for Holmgren to keep him, especially because there is a chance of success.
I’ll be the first:
“Viva la Man-Heck!”
More Mangini fine. More Daboll Noooooooooooo. Or is this just a plot to get Gruden when he is ready to come back next year.
Friend of mine in the real estate biz said that Heckert just bought a house in Strongsville.

Cleaveland, I presume, is joking.
Yes, just reprising an old joke.
I hear Heckert bought BQ’s house
I am ok with this. Next step GM (which I think is already a done deal), then a new OC (no chance Daboll is back in that position), a new NFL QB (no draft pick), and then get some talent from those 11 picks.
SIX wins next year, here we come!!!!
[…] seasons come to a conclusion prior to accepting positions elsewhere within the NFL. With Eric Mangini and staff being retained, the rest of the front office building blocks appear to be coming to fruition, all during […]
The extra picks are almost all 5th and sixth rounders.
Must be a kick returner in there somewhere.
Bummer. That’s all I can say. Was hoping to cleanse our franchise of the Mangini era, but what can you do? Am willing to trust Holmgren’s judgment on this, especially since Mangini has been forced into a reduced role where his capacity to destroy lives/teams is minimized.
Perhaps a Gruden or Cowher come available next year if the team is languishing? Sigh. WFNY…
I am shocked wait I’m a native Clevelander nevermind! 🙁 Mangini should be renamed Houdini for being able to escape the chopping block like he reportedly has today. I sure hope this isn’t another decision that us poor fans will come to regret in the long run I mean Holmgren gets paid regardless and could always leave can we say the same? I hope Mangini has no responsibilities other then coaching and babysitting Diebold and Ryan. If all the personnel matters stay with Holmgren and his new GM then this could work, I hope.
Btw as far as Josh Cribbs goes he looks and sounds like the biggest whiner I can remember in this town when it comes to athletes. Watching his little press conference in his car in the driveway at Berea made me laugh.
Go Cavs! Go Tribe! Go Bucks!
I’ll come back to the Browns when Mangini is gone. No sooner. I’m afraid the franchise is setting itself back about 2-3 years in its building plan by keeping him around.
In the meantime, I pray (for everyone’s sake) that he is not allowed within 500 miles of the draft war room in April (or any personnel decisions up to that point).
I wish I had the interviewing skills of Mangini…
please change the title to “Waiting For Next Decade” … add another idiot to the woodpile … when does the Holmgren era end!!!!
@hozo – like the decade suggestion, but Cavs may challenge our cynicism. They have the look this year
THIS WAS THE BEST OUTCOME IMAGINABLE!
Mark my words, Holmgren wants to coach again.
But there is no way he appoints himself coach after just one week.
He waits a year.
LOL @ all the “I’m done with the Browns until Mangini is gone” people. Really?
The same people who will be buying tickets on Craigslist if the Browns start winning games next year.
I may not like the coach, or some players, or the owner, but it’s the Browns. And they have my support no matter what.
(FWIW, I do like the coach, I was just making a point.)
@71: Yes, really. And since I live in N.C., I won’t be buying tix anytime soon.
For the record, I only give unyielding loyalty to my alma mater (OSU). Sure I want all the Cleveland teams to win, but I won’t give my money or support to them just blindly. I stopped when the Browns left town…won’t ever go back to that for a professional sports team.
I’m reserving judgment because I have absolutely no clue what this latest turn of events has in store for the Cleveland Browns but to say I’m skeptical would be an understatement. Lets face it we know less today then we did yesterday and this is after Mike Holmgren was named President of the organization. Everything seems to be flying in the face of making sense but who knows when it comes to the Browns maybe that isn’t such a bad idea. Btw I can’t see Holmgren becoming head coach and being President but then again the Redskins just did that with Shanahan. Maybe this is why Holmgren is hiring a GM. Either that or Mangini bought himself some time before the ax man cometh I don’t know.
