January 13, 2010While the Browns continue to make moves to build up their management team, some of their former employees are finding themselves in the news.
First the positive. Reports say that average head coach, superior person Romeo Crennel will make his triumphant return to the NFL next season as the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. Romeo, who went 24-40 in four seasons as the Browns head coach, will be re-united with his old buddy Charlie Weis, who last week was named the offensive coordinator in KC, and GM Scott Pioli, the former head personnel man for New England. The hope is that the two, under second year head coach Todd Haley, can re-create the magic that worked for three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots.
Good for Romeo for getting back to what he does best, leading a defense. He may be a Peter Principle guy, so being a D-Coordinator again should invigorate him. It should be quite an interesting mix in KC, with two highly decorated coordinators and ex-head coaches working under a young coach in Haley.
Now to the other end of the spectrum.
Old friend, diva WR Braylon Edwards, fresh off of his easy touchdown drop in the Jets playoff win over the weekend was back in Cleveland for his day in court. This stems from the alleged assault outside of a Cleveland night spot on October 5th. The butterfingered one pleaded no contest to aggravated disorderly conduct and was sentenced to three years probation.

Municipal Judge Michelle Earley gave Edwards a suspended 180-day jail sentence and fined him $1,000. She placed him on inactive probation, meaning he will not have to report to a probation officer.
She scolded him, however, for putting himself in such a predicament.
“Someone who has as much to lose as you should not be standing in front of me,” Earley said to Edwards. “Situations like this are senseless. You have to make better choices.”
The incident was classic Braylon. Not thinking when he should have, and showing jealousy towards others when he should have been plenty secure in his own shoes. The fight was the last straw for Eric Mangini and Browns management, who as we all know, shipped him to New York a few days later.
Maybe Braylon is getting the last laugh as the Browns finished the season 5-11, while his new team is in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs. Of course, last week he took a chance to take a shot at his old team in a Yahoo Sports column.
“It’s just inconsistency, frustration, losing confidence, the whole nine yards. When you’re supposed to be this big-name receiver and you’re only getting two or three balls a game and you’re losing, it frustrates you,” Edwards acknowledged. “Then everybody talks about how you’re going to get the ball, then you don’t get balls, then you’re playing with different quarterbacks all the time.
“I had four quarterbacks last year. We had Josh Cribbs playing quarterback at one point last year. Then you have guys who don’t know what they’re doing. Everybody talks about Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne being these great receivers, but their systems are consistent and their offensive coordinators know what they’re doing. They get these guys the ball. Twelve passes a game versus two.”
Oh, but there is more.
“Here, they’re committed to winning football games and everything else is secondary. They don’t worry about petty things here at the Jets organization,” said Edwards, whose squad faces the Bengals again in Saturday’s AFC wild-card matchup. “Everything is built around winning and forget everything else. Over there, everything is petty, worried about the wrong thing – what a guy is saying, what a guy is making. There’s just too much foolishness over there and too many people there who are still worried about the wrong thing.”
Who else is glad that this diva is long gone?

Wow. Really, Braylon? Makes me sick that I ever rooted for you. I hope you drop every ball your way and can’t wait til the day you make your return to Cleveland so you can get the boos you deserve.

FWIW, the Romeo signing will save Randy Lerner and the Browns about $3 million over the next two years.

Thanks Scott, you read my mind on the savings issue. I had a white Braylon jersey that met its end unceremoniously the day after the trade. Turns out replica NFL jersies rip really easily at the seams (almost incredible hulk style). Normally I’m big on donating used clothing, but I decided it wouldn’t be fair to subject someone less fortunate to the inevitable ridicule that would follow while wearing that jersey.
The PD article also mentioned that Edwards is continuing to fund his $1 million scholarship program for inner-city kids, so we should keep that in mind. As much as I don’t like him, he is a reminder that no one is all bad (or all good).
In the Jets last two games of the season, Bray-Bray had 4 receptions for 33 yards. 4 receptions for 33 yards. Way to step up! I can’t wait to read this guy’s comments when the Jets offer him a two year deal for 3 or so million.

MrCleavland – That was part of his sentencing from court, according to Fox8 news last night. The judged ordered him to continue his work in the Cleveland community. I believe that it’s great for the kids, but Butterfingers wouldn’t do it unless he had to.

I think Edwards would have continued the program even if he didn’t have to. I mean, you’d have to be a really scummy dirtbag to renege on a pledge like that (i.e., Michael Scott blowing off his pledge to Scranton schoolkids). Edwards may be 95% insufferable jerk, but he’s done more for school kids that I ever have.
@ JK – I usually wear t shirts, though I tend to wear sweat-wicking fabrics whilst going out on ye olde long run. I also care very little for the NFL and have never owned and never will own a college football jersey. Always just wore scarlet OSU t-shirts to games on Saturdays in cbus.
