MLB Trade Rumors: Fausto Carmona on the Block?
January 29, 2010Cavaliers Preview #48: Cavs at Indiana Pacers
January 29, 2010Before we get blasted in the comments for this being a fluff kind of piece- yes it is. You may choose not to read. You have been warned.
You ever wonder what an NBA player eats after a game? I suppose the question you have to ask is whether or not said player was more than a spectator for most of the contest. I’ve seen star players put down incredible portions of food following a game. Pounds of fruit salad. Pizzas. Yes, that is supposed to be plural. It makes sense when you consider how many calories they use in a game.
This may or may not be of any interest to you, but how would you like to know what a player is at least offered after a big game?
For the game against the Cavaliers, the Timberwolves were given the following choices (players could select as many as they wanted)-
For starters:
Balsamic Glazed Chicken Salad (Romaine hearts, fresh mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes, basil)
Tiger Shrimp Cocktail (12 pcs, spicy dipping sauce and fresh lime)
Salads (house, chef, fruit)
Quaker Steak and Lube Wings (18 pcs, hot, mild, Louisianan Licker)
Bacon Cheeseburger (beef, turkey or veggie).
Yes, only in America is a Bacon Cheeseburger an appetizer…
Entrees:
Full Slab Spicy Hot Smoked Baby Back Ribs (homemade dry rubbed ribs, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and Cajun gravy)
12oz Char Grilled Delmonico Steak (garlic mashed potatoes, caramelized mushrooms, roasted vegetables)
Catch of the Day- Baked Flounder (rice pilaf, roasted vegetables)
Chicken Parmesan w/Pasta Marinara (garlic bread, roasted vegetables).
I have to say, I was a little disappointed here. These are millionaires. No lobster? No Filet Mignon? Well, it was for the visiting team.
In addition, they listed four different pizza options plus a sushi menu. The sushi had to be ordered before the start of the game. I suppose that means any of the other menu items could be ordered at any time.

“Well, it was for the visiting team.”
I’m pretty sure I do remember Windhorst writing that the spread for the Cavs is much more elaborate than what’s written here.
Rick – I like these type of pieces. I have no idea what goes on in a pro locker room/clubhouse. I think its facinating.
2 things:
1.)That picture + plus talks of Quaker Steak has me longing for a Tuesday trip to Valley View.
2.)The only time I would approve a visiting team being offered a Filet Mignon is if it were from the Sirloin Stockade buffet.
These guys get meal money, right? So are they charged for this stuff?
BTW, I think the reason they have to order the sushi before the game is that it takes extra time to cook it.
… and I have a lame lean cuisine frozen dinner thingy waiting for me in the freezer. whoopie.
I thought that was pretty cool. I think I’ve read before that visiting teams in other arenas are given a bag lunch or something for a postgame meal. Speaks to the class of the organization.
Windhorst did infact write a piece on this, and as he described it the spread gets more ellaborate each year. They have sushi on the plane, I guess Lebron and Gilbert love the stuff. Windhorst’s story about how he saw shannon brown take to pieces of pizza on top of each other, roll them up and dunk them in ranch sauce is hilarious. He said the kids could eat amazing amounts of food, and had like 4% body fat.
Mr Cleaveland-
It’s totally like the chocolate chip cookies at Max and Erma’s.
I’ve never been to Quaker Steak :/
@Mr. Cleaveland- players do get a meal stipend at the beginning of each road trip. I’m not exactly sure, but I think that the team would be charged for each player’s order and then the players would have to settle with the team later or something of that nature. It didn’t seem like many of the T-Wolves were that interested in the meals.
Did any of them order the Skip’s Scramble?
The pizza in ranch dressing reminded me of one of the greatest foods I ever ate. At The Feast in Little Italy one time, one of the stands had Italian sausage rolled up in a slice of pizza. It gave me a two day case of heartburn, but was worth every single solitary second.
Sorry to hijack, but food discussion was bound to get hijacked at some point. 🙂
I got me a hankerin’ for the Old Country Buffet
Rick-
Is this a first hand account? Any sources?
They have the Quaker Steak station at the Q, that’s the only time I ever have had it. Louisiana Lickers. You gotta try em. Huge bucket of em… phenomenal.
That menu looks too damn good, makes me so hungry
@Kensha- first hand.
In 2006, NBA players got a $106 per diem. It’s gone up a couple bucks by now. here’s a funny story about how they spend it. One of my favorite quotes is from Jamal Sampson. He was making $800K that year.
“I love it when we have a back-to-back,” Nuggets center Jamal Sampson said. “That means we get free breakfast.”
@jcm that’s a good read, thanks!
Rick, was your bacon cheeseburger appetizer cooked to order?
Not for nothing, but I’m totally going to Canal Road in the Valley tonight before I head out to watch the game. Thanks guys.
And Craig – I get those every year at the Feast. It’s the most enjoyable two days of agony I’ve ever gone through.
Like the ‘fluff’ read Rick, did ya see what they drink after the game. I’m thinking they are thirsty too.
Seen but not partaken of unfortunately Brian. Right side…
@ Denny in #9, go to the original location in Sharon, Pa. Can’t beat the original!!!
Sushi is not cooked, it’s raw, but it does take extra time to make it
I’m lovin’ it!
