NBA Trade Rumors: Cavs Reject Pacers’ Price for Murphy
February 2, 2010NFL Draft: Don’t Count on Brandon Graham in the Second Round
February 2, 2010Not all trade rumors involve the Cavaliers, and that is a good thing. It seems our old friend Larry Hughes isn’t very happy these days. As all good Cavalier fans know, Hughes was a major disappointment for Cleveland after signing hm to a large contract in 2005. Hughes played in a little over half of Cleveland’s games during his time here due to injuries and personal tragedies. His contract was viewed largely as a millstone around the franchise’s neck until Danny Ferry pulled off the now famous six-player deal in 2008 which sent Hughes to the Bulls in exchange for Ben Wallace, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak.
Hughes wasn’t happy here playing sidekick to LeBron James. He also didn’t feel that he should compromise his ‘style’ of basketball in order to fit what the team wanted.
“They wanted me to sacrifice things so we could win,” he said.
Why yes Larry. Not to go all Al Pacino on you, but that is what makes a successful team.
He welcomed his trade to Chicago with open arms, thinking that he fit in better with the Bulls. It turned out that Chicago wasn’t really the best fit for him after all. After finding himself the odd man out of the guard rotation, Hughes pouted his way out of Chicago.
He was traded to the Knicks, where I suspect he figured he could run up and down the floor and play little defense under Coach Mike D’Antoni. Now (you may want to sit down for this surprise) after just under a season in New York, Larry Hughes wants out. And here is my favorite part: he’s not shaving until he gets traded.
You can’t make this stuff up folks. That’ll show ’em, Larry…
Could it be that the grass isn’t always greener outside of Cleveland? I don’t understand what happened. He got to play for Chicago and New York – isn’t that every player’s dream, Bill Simmons? Maybe he can get traded to the Clippers. That should round out the tri-fecta.
And don’t forget to include Soap Opera Hughes in the free agent class of 2010. He’s available July 1st. Teams will no doubt be lining up at midnight the last day of June to talk to the guy that averages playing 58 games a season.

Complete delusion has set in with this man. Amazing.
He’s gonna be looking like DA pretty soon.
I can’t wait for someone to pay him big bucks this summer. I bet it’s Shanxi. Can you imagine how potent a backcourt of Starbury and Laura Hughes would be? Watch out Shandong!
milk was a bad choice.
bwahahahaha
A GM’s performance evaluation has to include trash disposal as well as player aquisition. Dumping that contract and getting Delonte has to somewhat balance Ferry signing him to begin with. Almost as impressive as Paxson’s greatest hit, convincing someone else to pay Shawn Kemp tens of millions. Given that Kemp was already a fat tub of goo with a substance abuse problem, maybe the best NBA con job ever.
Excellent work, Rick. As always.

ah this made me smile….good ol’ back iron Larry
Thank you Alex.
Is it bad that I’m smiling from ear to ear while Larry is crying?
I want Larry to be with the Knicks, as yet another reason why LeBron would avoid playing for them.
Larry Blues and his tears tat just make me think: Tears of a clown! He and Braylon Edwards should get together and become best buddies they could wallow in their anti-Cleveland sentiment while both achieving the same number of championships: zero!
Here is a trade that Bill Simmons came up with on his Twitter. Pretty scary indeed, but it almost makes too much sense to really happen.
CHI gets R.Allen/House expirings (2010 cap space!); SAC gets Deng + T.Allen/Scal exp’s; BOS gets K.Martin, Nocioni + Hinrich. Who says no?
“he’s not shaving until he gets traded.” He is playing for the wrong New York team if this is his style of protest.
“They wanted me to sacrifice things so we could win,” he said.
Quote of the year. Just brilliant.
Larry Hughes is probably the worst player in the NBA
its a group on Facebook……what a chode
Looking forward to another “Tag, you’re it!” post from HeyLarryHughes… dot com. But I have a feeling that Larry isn’t going to get his wish. Just a hunch.
What also kills me is that his contract had bonuses tied to the amount of wins the Cavs had. So, the Cavs were asking him to sacrifice, so the team could win more, and he could make more money. Shame on the Cavs.
Larry Hughs will be the first person elected to the NBA’s Crybabies Hall of Fame
BB – stop trying to be logical… it’s Larry Hughes we’re talking about here 🙂

Amin with the best comment of the year. Genius. This post also made me confirm that the best URL of all time is still alive:

I remember free agency a few years ago and the Cavs really wanted to get Michael Redd. He decided to sign w/ the Bucks and we settled on Larry Hughes. Today, I’m glad we picked up Hughes and not Michael Redd. Even though Larry Hughes is one of the worst 5 basketball players of all time, Michael Redd’s contract would be massive and we’d still be eating that today. And every year, Redd has season ending surgeries. If we had Redd, we wouldn’t have Delonte and Shaq today.
Kinda forgot he played for the Cavs. I always thought of him being in that Nelly video.
Now if Hughes was a Yankee, not shaving would really stick it to the Steinbrenners. I miss Larry like a hole in the head.
Rofl. That is all.
Funny, you blast Hughes, mention negatives, but forget that he was promised the 2 guard spot and lured by Cleveland, then played out of position and played the point. Oh ya, they won the Eastern Conference with Hughes playing point at 6 foot 5 and never been back since? Yes, his brother did die, also his wife almost did, you may call it “personal” but tough for any human. Oh ya, did you mention he won the first “Austin Carr Award”, well if you know hoops, you know Cleveland, you know Austin Carr, the award was to the most professional player on and off the court to the fans, press and community. Oh, such a terrible man. Then, Chicago, hey, let’s face it, a rookie coach, with zero coaching ability, fighting for his job. Then New York, come on? Did you know their season? How about Marbury, Curry, Robinson (benched for a month), Harrington (not allowed to start) and Hughes. One, he got them out of the worst start in Knicks history. Two, he started in December and gave them their best month in almost 20 years in wins.
Also when he started, in the top 5 in steals in the whole NBA. Yes, any hack can google a few stats and trades and write an article, but there is only 400 men that play this game at this level Rick, and you fail to know why Larry Hughes is going on year number 13? The reason, he is a defensive player! Yes, when playing other teams, Hughes plays, Lebron, he has Kobe, he has the top player on the opposing team. He hustles! He will peal 10pts off their game. See RIck, hoops are played on the pro level on a full court basis. Hughes may not average 22 for his season, maybe 14, but he will take 8-10 points off the opposing team. Coaches know it, the league knows it, that is why if he wants to play more than the average 3.7 years the average NBA player career is, he will, and that’s why he is on year number 13. You ever think a player like Nash may know a tad more than D’Antoni? Are do you think starting Duhon 50 games this year was smart?
D’Antoni lost games to sit Robinson and Hughes a month. That is high school crap, No Nash coattails to ride on anymore. Hughes only wants one thing, WIN.
He has been one of the most charitable players in the league and never one bit of trouble off the court. But LeBrons Mom drives a new Hummer, Kobe is on trial, Guns in locker rooms, shootings, Delonte packs an arsenal, but those are all the “good guys”? Learn the game, more important, learn life and true individuals that have overcome adversity in their families that others have never had. Hughes is misunderstood, quiet, but can put in 40 minutes any night. Always in shape, give him 30 minutes twice a week, the teams win, isn’t that what it is all about? Go to the finals? Got to the playoffs? You left the Wizards part out, the Cleveland Eastern Championship, the wins when on court for Chicago and New York, with plain poor analysis and quick writing. What, 25 wins for New York in D’Antoni (highest paid coach’s 2nd year) and Hughes helped with most in Dec/Jan? Where is the analysis? You have to do your homework junior cause a well informed fan will eat you up.
Hey Boogegyman,
Living in Cleveland, when Hughes was promised the two guard then played out of position for Brown’s half court offense with no speed with Lebron and Hughes, we won the Eastern Conference Championship. Ya, he played most the year, 70 games, even outscored Lebron on occasion. Got swept in the finals, but sure, we have added tons of extra talent, every year, but you know what, we have never been back since Hughes clock management, court vision and steals helped get us the farthest we ever been with the so called best player in the NBA. So riddle me that batman?
Hughes was great here, but so good at point, they would not let him go back to his position. Players like to play their position, all do, Hughes and Arenas and Jamieson were so great at Washington, that’s why we went after him, promised the 2 guard, then screwed him to playing point. Not his fault, you think Kobe is going to play point, Lebron? Shaq? Little Moe, sure. Get real on your post, you embarrass yourself.
