Grading the Cavaliers: Shaquille O’Neal
February 17, 2010Browns Part Ways With Jamal Lewis
February 17, 2010Yesterday I was driving to Columbus trying to keep from thinking about the trade rumors swirling like snowflakes that surrounded my car (eat your heart out Bud Shaw), and I started to think about what items I might find as my wife drags me through the mall worth purchasing. Another Cavs sweatshirt perhaps? Maybe a discounted Tribe hat? My mind drifted (more snow references, man I’m on a roll) to thoughts of that fragile time in Cleveland sports history when we weren’t sure whether we would have another NFL team come to town, or if the league would award us an expansion team.
The popular sentiment was for the league to award us an expansion franchise and let us keep the name Browns plus the history and colors. Now, I was certainly for keeping the history, and even the name. I was kind of luke-warm on the colors to be honest with you. I would have preferred that the new team take on the colors of the Indians, and since that would make two teams with those colors, why not have the Cavs trade as well. I have to say, as much as I can’t stand Pittsburgh, you certainly know how to identify that city. All of it’s teams sport the black and yellow. It makes it easy for a fan doesn’t it?
Now, there is no way that Browns fans are going to give up their colors now. It just would be a foolish battle. Not worth fighting, and I know I’m probably in the minority anyways. So why not change the other two teams to match the Browns? What would that look like? Well, a little like this (big thanks to Denny for the picture work)-
Then you have the Indians look-
Honestly? That Cavs look would be kind of awesome for a special promo night or something. And yes, I brought back the vests. What do you think? Would you like to see all three teams in the same colors? Which color scheme would you prefer?

I like the cavs a lot, probably because it retains the orange on the old school logo. Doubt it would work with the new jerseys.
Indians are really drab, some retro jersey’s from other teams are similar and I was never a fan.
Creating a bunch of Red/White/Blue teams would have been cool, although I kind of like the Browns colors because you know nobody is wearing it simply to look cool
Oh sure so you wanna be like Pitts-Puke now with the same color schemes! Brilliant. đ
I couldn’t resist I had to beat someone to it but I kind of like all the pro sports teams sharing colors but if I had to pick it would be the Cavaliers wine and gold. Of course the Cavaliers have more uniforms then anyone these days. Brown and orange hasn’t been good for to long it’s lost it’s luster and the Indians are basically red, white and blue.
While the Cavs picture shows the origional brown I think the brown used now (ie: the pants this year) is a lot darker.
As for those Indians jerseys you would have to assume that like the Browns white jerseys Orange helmet that the colors of the helmet, undershirt, sweat bands, and socks would all be orange too… if that were the case it would be crazy lol.
Finally, dont forget we’d have to take away all the logos too đ
Negative on this idea. The reason the yinzers have to have standardized colors for their teams is because they’re so poor they couldn’t afford apparel otherwise. The Cavs should feel free to go back to the blue and orange look full-time though. Not that I mind wine and gold, but colors that were good enough for Mark Price and Co. are good enough with me. Then again, do the Cavs really have a true color scheme these days?
And in case anyone uses this as a launch point for another “get rid of Chief Yahoo” suggestion, I’ll preempt and say leave the Chief alone, and the team colors, too.
On the plus side, Wahoo looks a little less racist now, or at least less specific on the racism.
ive thought about this too. for the cavs, it wouldnt be a big deal. dan gilbert loves making alternate jerseys. slap lebron’s name to the back of anything and people will buy it.
awesome!
If anything, the Cavs and Indians should change to orange/brown. Red/blue is the most overused color combo in professional sports and would offer no identity to the city of Cleveland. I will have to ask the great Paul Lukas on his thoughts on this subject. On a side note, I think its great that the Tribe starts spring training in under a week, and the only mention of them on this Cleveland sports blog revolves around them changing their colors to look like the Browns. Thanks for offering fans a reason to be disinterested Larry Dolan, you lose, good day sir!
Honestly, I think it’s good on Pittsburgh to have a consistent color scheme for the teams. I dig it.
Not the greatest photoshopping ever done, but I think the point comes across.
So… I hear the NBA trade deadline is coming up….
Um, LeBernie – DO YOU NOT REALIZE THAT THIS IS AMERRRICA SIR?
Alex @5 FTW.
I say let go with the orange a little more, Denny.
I still have reservations about the long term ramifications of the color switch? And how would the orange and brown mesh with Shaq out there? So many questions…
I actually almost bought a brown and orange cavs hat not all that long ago. It was the new school C with the sword through it, but brown base. I kinda dug it…
B-bo
I’m wine and gold. I think the Richfield Coliseum, where I used to see-um, was decorated to match ’em. I think Gund was decorated to match the blue crew, and I thought it was the sleepiest place ever. I much prefer the new look of the Q, which – again – is consistent with wine and gold.
You’ve gotta be kidding me. Pittsburgh has to have the same colors because of their less than intelligent fan base. I always made fun of my cousins (who live in the Pittsburgh area) for their city being unoriginal. Let’s mak all the teams the same color! no thanks. I like the fact our teams all have their own defining colors. Even the Gladiators & Monsters have their own colors. And I don’t know anyone who wears the colors of their team, without there being a logo, or team name, on the item of clothing. Keep the colors seperate dot com!
Orange Cavs jersey with brown letters would be badass. I have a brown and orange Cavs shirt and I’ve seen a similar hat around town…same with the Indians. Don’t think it really works with the Tribe as well as it does the Cavs though.
Then again…do the Indians really matter at this point anymore?
i agree with #4
Denny, I apologize for my complete lack of patriotism. All colors for all of our teams must be red, white, and blue. Also, I call for the ousting of Latin American Manny Acta in favor for a true American, Hacksaw Jim Duggan. When Fausto walks 6 in a row later this year, Hacksaw can strut to the mound yelling HEYYY-OOOO and then send Fausto to the showers early with a good 2×4 smack.
This idea is bad not just on several levels, but in multiple dimensions and in myriad continua as well. The instrument has not been invented that can measure the badness of this idea.
Just to cite one horror scenario, are you telling us you want to see the Tribe in turd pants too?
This is an idea that David Modell would like.
It’s Ash Wednesday, Rick. A good time to repent.
I’m not liking the O&B color scheme for the cavs:
[Cavs Team Shop]
I like Manny Acta. He stay. But put Hacksaw at third. He’ll just hit guys with the 2×4 and keep them from stupidly rounding third.
@Denny, solid photoshop. I would grade it B+.
with Hacksaw at third, Kenny Lofton scores and the Tribe wins the 2007 World Series
The Indians need to stay the course, but the Cavs for sure need to go back to the Price/Nance colors. Those are the best.
I love the fact that our 3 teams have 3 different color schemes. 4 if you count the Buckeyes.
when you factor in the different Cavs color schemes, it gives nearly unlimited options to wear (who wants to wear green or purple anyway)
Since over half of my ward-drobe is Cleveland/OSU sports apparel, my wife appreciates it as well.
I’m diggin’ the colors. The Cavs jersey looks awesome that way. The Indians one looks really good, but it would be hard to get used to, but it would be kind of awesome
Hacksaw at 3rd and…Tatanka at first. Indians and all.
orange and brown looks great on the cavs.
i would love to see them all wear each others colors on promo nights, but not switch full time
Okay, I’m feeling the idea in general. I do think it’s cool that Pittsblah has the same color scheme for their three teams, and I do like the idea of being the Brown city since it’s so rare. But I wouldn’t go orange and brown for all three teams.
Browns – orange and brown as always
Indians – brown and blue, replace the red with brown
Cavs – brown, orange, gold
that would be siiiick, it would look good and give the region a really cool color-identity to rival pitt, and considerably more attractive to boot.
meh…I feel like the Cavs have gone through so many color variations that it wouldn’t make a whole lot of difference there.
But, IMO, if you’re going to do it you don’t stick with any of the existing schemes. You kick it all to the curb and define a new color scheme that is unique to the city itself and put that on all the teams. That way it’s not the Cavs or the Tribe adopting the Browns’ colors or any other combination. It’s the Cleveland professional sports teams adopting Cleveland’s colors universally.
I think some variation of blue, white, and green to highlight the “green city blue lake” or “forest city” or generally our parks and lake.
