Olympic Roster Selected

lebronolympicsThere really was little question that LeBron James would be invited. The question that remains is whether LeBron will join the team for the World Championships this summer. LeBron is not alone however. Several members of the team are or could be free agents this summer and would be hesitant to play until they were signed to their respective teams.

The returning members- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Carlos Boozer and Dwight Howard.

LeBron’s best buddy from the gold medal team- Jason Kidd, will not be returning. Nor will Tayshaun Prince or Michael Redd.

Also on the 27 man roster- Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Chauncey Billups, Amare Stoudemire, Lamar Odom, Al Jefferson, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, OJ Mayo, Andre Iguodala, Kendrick Perkins, Danny Granger, David Lee, Brook Lopez, Russell Westbrook, LaMarcus Aldridge, Gerald Wallace and Eric Gordon.

A 12 man roster will be selected from this group to travel to Turkey and compete for the World Championships.

Love seeing LBJ in his #6 representing the red, white and blue! I can’t wait for next season when he sports his new # in wine and gold. ;)

It’s hard to know who of the returning members will dropout or have other conflicts that preclude them from playing in 2012. Here would be my roster…

    LeBron James
    Dwyane Wade
    Kobe Bryant
    Carmelo Anthony
    Chris Bosh
    Chris Paul
    Deron Williams
    Dwight Howard
    Kevin Durant
    Brook Lopez
    Gerald Wallace
    Derrick Rose

That said you’ve gotta figure 2 of the Lebron, Kobe, Wade, Melo core will beg out for some reason or another this time. You’ve gotta think that Durant will help pick up some of that slack.

Also, I thought it was slightly curious that Joe Johnson wasn’t on the invite list.

Hopefully LBJ will get a bigger jersey this summer. In the picture it looks like he’s losing blood flow to his arms.

I think having a shooter like Durant in the Olympics would help. That’s the one thing American born bballers struggle with, shooting. We have the athleticism, strength, and endurance… but lack pure shooters. I also think having Al Jefferson there would be nice, just plop his big behind in the paint, Shaq style, and wreak havoc on the smaller, weaker Euro teams

Contracts and injuries will obviously play a big part in the 12 that represent the US in Poland this summer. If I were to guess I’d say you were pretty close dwhit. I think Paul might be a scratch depending on his injury, and I wonder about Kobe as well. He is getting pretty beat up this season. He may want some time off.

I hope the practice facility is in New York, ’cause that’s the only time 2 superstars will be playing for the same team at the same time in that city…

Interesting… no Brandon Roy? I guess they leaned a little heavier on guards but Roy should have been there over Gordon and Iggy, perhaps others.

  • dwhit

Great point. Joe Johnson and Roy are two interesting non-invites. You have to wonder if USA Basketball kicked the tires on those guys already and found out that they weren’t looking to get on the team or something.

  • Stinkfist

this just in… Joe Johnson and Brandon Roy have been traded to Team China. In exchange, the US will receive two gymnasts, a lifetime supply of fortune cookies, and a box of those stupid finger traps

Hope Kevin Love gets on the team. Young talent is what we need. No offense to Wallace or Billiups – I’d much rather see the kids go out there and have fun.

If we’ve learned anything from the past, it’s that in international basketball, you’d better have a reliable threat from their crazy not-quite-NBA but not-quite-college 3-point line. That was the reason we used Michael Redd in the Olympics, and Redd was a good contributor. Because of that, some like Jamal Crawford would be really valuable. I think OJ Mayo and Kevin Durant are solid shooters right? Let’s use them on the 12-man squad.
