Cavs 108, Celtics 88: Shaq Injured, Cavs Dominate Without Him
February 26, 2010Guest Post: A Second Look at the Eastern Conference Playoffs
February 26, 2010As my Twitter article proved yesterday, we are in a slow season for sports news. Yes, the Cavs are trying to play themselves into shape for the playoffs, but trying to draw too many conclusions from individual games proves problematic in the NBA. The NFL combine is going, but I think we all know pretty much what options the Browns have at #7 this year. The Indians have pitchers and catchers reporting, but as Andy Baskin told me on Twitter the other day, the Indians have a great chance this year with Russell Branyan and about $100 million in payroll additions. So, rather than report on any other Twitter news, I thought I would take a look and see what we were talking about last year at this time. One point twenty-one gigawatts!
The biggest news story was the trade of Kellen Winslow to the Buccaneers. I know a lot of us were sad to see Winslow go as a playmaker. That might have also been the first and last actual quote we might have gotten from George Kokinis who thanked Winslow for his contributions. Of course now with the benefit of hindsight we all know that the trade was a mixed bag. The Browns lost their most electric playmaker, but also a battered, bruised football player that wanted (and ended up) being the highest paid tight end in the NFL.
While we were already excited by the Indians’ free agent signing of Mark DeRosa, we had our first post about the injury of Kerry Wood with his sore back. And Kerry Wood’s back turned out to be the least of the Indians’ worries as the season progressed and the gutting of our team commenced.
Last year, we broke format to discuss the return of Tiger Woods to golf from injury. Of course we might be able to talk about Tiger’s return to golf this year too at some point. Then again, we won’t be able to get into too many details because of the family friendly nature of the site. I know that our unwillingness to discuss the details of Tiger Woods hardly insulates anyone from anything, but think of it as a protection of our commenting policy.
TD was talking about Browns QBs and wondering if Derek Anderson could still be our guy. Unfortunately for TD he wasn’t talking about DA being “our guy” with relation to awesome bench beards in the dead of winter. At that time, we were still wondering if Mangini and company were trying to drive up trade interest in DA or creating a ginormous smokescreen that would enable them to clear room for a freshly drafted Mark Sanchez.
Last but not least, we were all fretting about the impending doom being foretold by Mangini’s rocky relationship with Shaun Rogers after ignoring him at a couple of chance meetings. A year later we know that Mangini actually ended up getting along fine with Shaun Rogers. We also came to realize that Rogers’ playing style and lack of gap discipline seemed to hurt the team defensive strategy as they played better after Rogers went out with injury.
That’s all for now from the WFNY Way-Back machine. We appreciate you guys bearing with us through the slow times and look forward to the days coming down the road when we have tons and tons of news to discuss with you.

The hot tub time machine is the new delorean…
P.S. The Celtics called, they want to borrow your time machine. They say they’re willing to trade Glen “Don’t Call me Big Baby” Davis for it
ive been following this site for years and ive always sung your praises to friends and colleagues as you guys truly do run the best cleveland sports blog.
however, i think its a tad contradictory to sell “got wood” tshirts and the “witness mo boobie” shirt with, well, boobie-esque o’s yet aspire to run a “family friendly” site. am i looking too much into this? i am by no means a prude, i guess im just thinking aloud. thank you internet.
Cleveland doesn’t need… roads…
