No. 23, the Player-Coach: “Everyone knows that LeBron is a general on the floor. He’s constantly talking with his teammates, and pointing around, instructing various cuts, rotations, passes, shots and picks. And if you’ve been close enough to the action, you may even know what he’s saying.
But there’s something really comforting in knowing that he’s actually teaching and reminding others of the game plan and scouting reports.
That’s why I think he and Mike Brown are perfect together. Mike prepares the team, and coaches the games; LeBron makes sure there are results on the floor. Neither get in each others’ way. LeBron is a coachable player, and Mike . . . well, he’s flexible. He knows that when LeBron is taking over, LeBron is taking over, and whatever “play” he draws up has to have room for the spontaneity involved with, yes, LeBron taking over.” [Wine and Goldrush]

Limbo in Berea: “Interestingly, according to sources within the organization, the new Browns regime has not interacted extensively with the full staff of scouts, basically leaving them alone to do their jobs and wonder about their futures. The scouting staff has been busy preparing off-season reports and scouting collegiate talent available during post-season workouts, as if nothing had changed.
While the team’s scouts have been busy helping prepare the team for the future, their individual futures are hazy. Most have expiring contracts come May and, sources close to the organization relay that the organization has failed to shed any real light on their futures or the the direction of the scouting department.” [Lane Adkins/The OBR – S/R]

And finally, some signing day retrospective: “Recruiting is important, there is no doubt about it. It is the lifeblood of college football and you can’t win if you don’t bring in talent that will allow for you to win. I understand that. What I don’t understand is why people get all crazy about a player choosing another school over OSU. Look at Tressel’s track record. Yes, he has pulled some top notch classes (2002, 2008, 2009), but he has also pulled some pretty middle-of-the-pack classes that have a few big time stars, some average players, and some prospects people write off immediately.
That’s where coaching comes in. Jim Tressel and his staff are great coaches. They know they can’t get the top class every year and while they do always land some big fish, they also know they can get players who fit their system well that they can coach up to become that big fish.” [Alex/Eleven Warriors]

I get the feeling that tOSU will be better off without Henderson.
I dont mind the Brownie Elf that much but dressing up some little freak and having him run around out there? No thank you.
Mark, where can I find that t-shirt? I saw someone wearing it the other day and have got to get one..
Aaand nevermind, got it with some clever googling (typing in all the words on the shirt into the google search box, brilliant!).
That elf is borderline terrifying.
Fear the Elf.
When I went to the Browns game against the Raiders I started out at Blind Pig, and I poop you not, a midget dressed up as Brownie walked up to me and handed me a 7oz Miller Lite. Made my season.
Look at the big O-line prospects that have come in recently, and look at how they’ve left. Bollman isn’t exactly the best at coaching them up.
Can’t really blame the kids for going elsewhere – though Henderson’s dad seems like a trip. Now he’s reneging on his NOLI and hasn’t sent it in due to the impending USC doom NCAA hearing. Will be interesting to see what happens but I’m largely over it.
1. LBJ can and does do everything.
2. I want the Elf back. I am not a fan of mascots though. I just want the Elf to be our team logo.
3. I LOVE HOW WE ARE JUST HANGING SOME OF OUR SCOUTS OUT ON A LIMB. These guys do great work for us and they deserve to know whether they have a job or not.
4. I don’t understand all of those numbers. I like predictions that are AVG/HR/RBI… that being said, I like seeing how others view our talent. It’s a shame we won’t have another .300 hitter.
Where’s Marte? I’m a Marte sympathizer and I think he has a bunch of talent and potential (if he gets a spot in the lineup and hits on a regular basis [BOOM take that Wedge])
5. I don’t really get into recruiting. I think it’s interesting that Florida can still recruit even after their coach has changed his stance about retiring as often as another Tiger Woods transgression comes out.
From reading that bit on Lebron’s coaching tendencies, and given the time of year, one can’t help to draw comparisons of him to Peyton Manning. Peyton may be the most accurate comparison to Lebron across the sports landscape.
Kensha-
Yeah, I can see the comparison. You have players like Kobe who are like leaders but Kobe still follows Phil. Whereas LBJ and Peyton will run the play that is best suited for the game. Peyton makes all of his cadences and audibles at the line and LBJ does that stuff on the court. Nice Comparison.
The Peyton/Lebron comparison is nice but – and here is the scary thing – LeBron is just so much more pysically dominating in his sport than Peyton is in his. Because of this I think people overlook the mental aspect of LeBrons game. LeBron is simply amazing.
its funny…my friends and i last year used to joke that LBJ won coach of the year, also.

You got that URL handy? I put that into google and all I get is airfare rates…

Brownie the Elf in 2D – all good
Brownie the Elf in 3D – Creepy.
I heard “somewhere” that the Browns were named after the Brown Bomber, who I guess is Joe Louis. Anyone with knowledge?
Maybe the mascot ought to be a boxer in one of those wonderful robes.
@#10, #11, #12, & #13. Yeah, LeBron’s out there scolding J.J. for a mistake he made on one play, with 10:00 left in the third quarter, of a home game in February, that, at the time, they were leading by 18 points. That’s some commitment to improving the team, its players, and Mike Brown’s defense . . . at all times.
None of this is meant to diminish Mike Brown, of course. I wavered on him a lot early on, but over the last year and a half . . . you can’t argue with success, and dominance.
You can say that he got out-coached in the Eastern Conference Finals last year. And to some extent he was. But there were also a slew of factors that were out of his hands. The test will be this year. We now have the personnel to legitimately match-up against any team / style, and the onus will be on Mike to learn from past mistakes and make sure the Cavs are prepared and the defense is equipped to counter any surprise attack.
But other than that Mike Brown has been stellar over the past year and a half. LeBron may make his job easier in some ways, but it isn’t easy to coach a superstar while remaining on the same page, maintaining a partnership at all times. Mike Brown designs the defense… and LeBron has bought into it to the point where he’s the defensive leader on the floor.
Together, Mike and LeBron have won more games than any other team since the start of the ’08-’09 season.
And despite the loss of John Kuester, our “offensive coordinator”, in the offseason, the Cavs are posting bigger O numbers this year.
Last year, the Cavs shot 46.8% and scored 100.3 points a game. This year, they’re shooting 48.5% and are scoring 101.1 points a game.
@WFNYScott and @WFNYAndrew:
Is there any reason Mike Brown shouldn’t be the frontrunner for Coach of the Year again? The team is on the same pace they were last year, and the Cavs are doing it in the midst of injury problems… Delonte West’s situation… and after incorporating three new starters, while moving three former starters to the bench.
Who would be his competition in a sagging Eastern Conference (at least at the top)? Jay Triano in Toronto? Larry Brown in Charlotte? Mike has to get the nod again, right?
how can the Buckeyes handle Wisconsin, a ranked opponent, while the 2 teams in front of them in the polls play cupcakes, and yet the Bucks LOSE votes in the poll?
