“After four seasons of toying with package deals of mediocre support, the Cavs pulled the trigger on acquiring a legitimate top-flight player to pair with the King. Though names like Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace and Delonte West are all considerable talents who have done good work for the Cavs, they’re not the players the Cavs needed to put them in position for a title. The Cavs needed, more than ever this season, to show LeBron James they were willing to do anything to win a title. They needed to give James the equivalent of the Gasol trade. And Wednesday night, they did.” [Matt Moore/NBA FanHouse]
—
“Don’t show up at Verizon Center looking to see [Zydrunas Ilgauskas] firing up three-pointers from the right corner. He’ll be here about as long as Drew Gooden, who was in the passenger seat Wednesday night when Jamison drove away. Gooden clearly needed a ride to Dulles to catch a flight to Los Angeles, where he’ll presumably join the Clippers who were the third party to the Washington-Cleveland deal. Actually, Big Z probably won’t show up in Washington at all. The Wizards can buy him out and he can sit out 30 days, then rejoin the Cavaliers for the playoffs. You think the Cavaliers are crazy enough to not have a veteran big man backing up Shaq?” [Michael Wilbon/Washington Post]
—
“How many different ways can I say that, after the Cavs deal for Washington’s Antawn Jamison? He is exactly the type of veteran power forward this team needs, in terms of talent and character.” [Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer]
—
“This looks like a fine deal, right now. I don’t know how these teams will feel about this trade down the line, because there might be a whole lot to regret. […] Antawn Jamison is a fine player, he stretches the defense, can rebound, can stay out of the way, and he rarely turns the ball over. But Stoudemire is an offensive powerhouse, the leading scorer on the league’s best offense, and someone who could run a devastating pick and roll combination with LeBron James(notes) for years.” [Kelly Dwyer/Ball Dont Lie]
—
“Big Z’s devotion to this franchise and all he’s done for the team is one of the reasons we watch sports. In the silly world of sports that we spend so much of our time worrying about, Big Z not returning to the team he’s done so much for as they try to win their first championship would be a true tragedy. I know basketball’s a business, but that first banner wouldn’t feel quite right without Z. I’m not usually one for sentiment, but I’ll miss big Z, even if it’s just for 30 days.” [John Krolik/Cavs the Blog]
—
“Cleveland not only landed Jamison — one of the best forwards in the L (averaging 20.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg) — but also keeps the ever improving JJ Hickson. Hats off to you, Danny Ferry. OK, LeBron. You now have all the horses you need to win a championship. No more excuses.” [Marcel Mutoni/SLAMOnline]
—
“Danny Ferry’s a crook, and if I’m ever in the same room as him I’m leaving my wallet in the car. First he dumped Larry Hughes and got some value (Delonte) in return. Then he moves Damon Jones for Mo Williams, then Sasha and Ben for Shaq, and now Z (with the chance he comes back) for Jamison essentially. And now his work is done.” [Brendan Bowers/Stepien Rules]
—
“If Big Z re-signs with the Cavs in 30 days, they will have basically stolen Jamison…for NOTHING. For all the Stoudemire talk, Jamison is arguably the better player. He’s a better rebounder and defender and probably fits into the Cavs scheme more so. And on top of that, they didn’t even have to throw in rising talent J.J. Hickson like they would’ve in the Stoudemire deal.” [The No Look Pass]
—
“My question is now to Mike Brown: How are you going to give all these guys their minutes and keep them all happy and productive? We will see how Mike Brown addresses that issue.” [Lake Erie Soldiers]
—
“Now, take all of these problems and combine then with everything else we already knew about Amare’s baggage. Now compare that with Jamison, who presents only two risks…” [Cleveland Frowns]
—
And finally, I was a part of a solid podcast last night with a handful of other Cleveland bloggers that discussed the Jamison trade as well as the first half of the Cavaliers season. Check it out… [Dugout Sports Show]

Z wouldn’t sign with the Mavs would he? Surely everyone from Ferry to LeBron to Moon Dog talked with him about the “plan” and it was discussed that if he were traded, he would be bought out and then come back to the Cavs. Z wouldn’t hold a grudge would he? He now has two new (although not really new, adopted) kids here in Cleveland….I can’t see him signing with Dallas or anywhere else for that matter, as hard as they may try.
Z please come home
And Antwan please play tonight.
With the pending physicals, I doubt we’ll see Jamison before tomorrow or Sunday against the Magic.
I like the trade, but if Z doesn’t come back, Karmic Retribution will prevent the Cavs from winning the title. Plus, Z just got his own puppet commercial!
I liked Bill Simmons using the Jersey Shore reference
“Grunfeld went to the bathroom and Danny Ferry pulled a robbery”
Z and a pick for Jamison.
Z back in 30 days, Gilbert can buy another draft pick for 2 million if he wants.
so…Cavs just get Jamison.
Those worried about the years left on Jamo’s contract. The rest of this year he will be fine. 2011 he will still be fine as he is aging nicely and does not really bang down low in the first place. 2012 if he breaks down, he becomes the next “Cavs large expiring contract”.
I know a lot of folks wanted Amare, but I can’t see the downside of this trade. Oh crap, I forgot about losing the rights to that European guy. OK, the debbie downers win.
Can we at least morph a Cavaliers Jersey on him?
Z will be back if/when he is bought out–signing with Dallas (or really anyone besides LAL, for that matter) has zero benefit over signing back with the Cavs.
Looking forward to seeing the Cavs with An-TAWN (not An-TWAN folks) in Orlando come Sunday.
Just another example of why Danny Ferry and Mike Brown are clearly the best GM/coach combo in town.
I wonder if Z will send the Cavs a postcard from DC?
Titus Pullo, I agree, Mike Brown COTY, Danny Ferry NBAEY, and LeBron James MVP. Cavs 2009-2010 Champs!
Mark my words.
Ya know they talked to Z about taking a bullet forthe team. Take the trade. take 30 days to rest up. GET PAID(withthe buy out and the pro-rated mid-level). I’m sure this was the agreement and you know he will be back. I’m sure number 11 wil be hanging in the rafters soon after he retires.
B-bo.. it’s said “Antwan” but spelled “Antawn”.
Ain’t gonna lie like you-all are. I would have liked Stoudemire better, and I see no huge gain from keeping Hickson. But on its own, this was a great deal.
Oh, and I had been looking forward to the Preldzic/Eyenga combo dominating the NBA in 2016. Bummer.
Denny: po-tay-to, po-tah-to? Fie you, English language!
What the Cavs have now is depth and rotation. Give Mike Brown Credit (Where’s Mike Brown’s Grade?) for keeping a steady rotation. The most important thing we can do to last in the playoffs is to have good energy management.
Energy Management is important because players get worn out late into the season. Especially LeBron James, he huffs and puffs severely deep in the playoffs. Keeping our guys rested an a good rotation will help us.
So Kudo’s to Mike Brown, hopefully he will get Jackson a little involved and keep as many guys playing as long as it’s effective.
Also I hope they aren’t going to be having too many parties in and out of town during the playoffs.
The Cavs lost to the Wiz in DC at the end of last season because of they we’re all partying the night before. That’s not unusual but making sure the players are staying focused, getting rest (sleep included), and keep a good diet. With that said Jamison should be a great addition.
You know how you keep everyone happy? By winning a $#^% ton of games. The players can even expend more effort on the court, because they know they do not have to be on the court for 35+min every night.
I heard rumors that the Cavs have interest in picking up T-Mac if he’s bought out by the Kings. Thoughts/Opinions?
@#7 – I am sure Denny will do his photoshop magic.
@ Maim – it’s a terrible idea and I hope the Cavs don’t do it.
T-Mac? Why don’t we pick up Iverson then??? The Cavs shouldn’t be interested in brand name players as much as they should be interested in valuable players. T-Mac is shooting 43%, which means he would chuck up too many shots and hurt the team.
Also, lets assume Amare would have resigned here, for a max contract. Yeah he’s a better player, and yeah he’s younger, but he would be making almost 2x as much as we’re paying Jamison.
I’m also hoping by the end of the season I will no longer think about drinking Jameson every time someone says Jamison.
Frowns, great job there.
@Titus Pullo – That’s not saying much. (at least until we see what the Browns new monster does).
@Denny – You guys should right an article about the poor dyslexic players in the NBA like Dwyane “Don’t Call Me Dwy-ane” Wade and Antawn “You Say It An-twan” Jamison.
Also, I know it seems like we got Z for “nothing,” and that may be essentially true. But in today’s league, we took on a lot of salary, like $35 million (28 to jam, ~6 for Telfair who will obviously exercise that player option). So, it’s not EXACTLY nothing. It’s a lot of lot of money and now is when we have to be EXTRA grateful that Gilbert is such a dedicated owner.
Everyone thinks he’s super loaded when really he’s smack dab in the middle of the pack.
GILBERT IS NOT LOADED. Just dedicated. Forget Cribbs; let’s get a “Thanks, DG” billboard.
NICE!
@Roosevelt – The value in keeping Hickson is that he can be a 15-8 guy probably by next year for very little money. Great, great value in that contract.
Thinking of numbers, if Boobie were at the 1, Mo at the 2, Bron at the 2/3, Jamison at the 4…hmmm…can Shaq change his number to 5?
Too bad there are only 48 minutes in a game.
Lake Erie Soldiers asks a good question: Where will Jamisons minutes come from? How about adding Powe in the mix too?
Last season we couldnt find enough big players, now we may have too many.
@ Kansha – I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Andy/Jamison frontcourt late in games. Shaq hasn’t played down the line in a ton of games. JJ isn’t going to get the late minutes.
At the same time, it depends on who we’re matched up against. This team is absurdly versatile.
@Denny-
I think your right on there. Jamison will our Mariano Rivera/Kyra Sedgwick: The Closer.
He will be great down the stretch.
@ Mayo I agree with Denny. Mc Grady is bad juju
Figures. I just gave Z some money for pirated Major League DVDs he hasn’t given me yet. Z, don’t worry about the 20 bucks just come back please!
That jersey looks great on Jamison.
@Denny:
It’s spelled “Harv” but pronounced “Lord.”
just saw this: http://thisonesforz.tumblr.com/
@Denny & Kensha – I was thinking about this last night too (I think I need a hobby). You cannot play Shaq in the last minutes of a game. Too many FT problems. They have never played JJ down the streach. I think in most cases its Andy at the 5 and Jamison at the 4. When Z is back he can fit in too.
Man are we deep.
This is all too much.
BACK TO WORK ALL OF YOUSE BEFORE WE’RE ALL CANNED!!!
Great picture Scott
Am I the only person who likes the Telfair addition?
He was basically the Lebron of point guards coming out of high school. Maybe LBJ, Mo, and Shaq can help him reach that potential.
