Breaking News: Browns Trade for Quarterback Seneca Wallace

It appears that Mike Holmgren got his guy. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns have traded with the Seattle Seahawks for Seneca Wallace.

More on this as it develops.

(Update: It is reported that the trade is a conditional draft pick in 2011, said to be ranging from a fourth- down to a sixth-round choice.  The Browns currently have their 11 selections for the 2010 NFL Draft)

Hmmmm….wasn’t this guy a receiver/skill position for a while? Sounds like Cribbs v. 2.0 ……I say we line up Cribbs and Wallace in the backfield with no true QB…Mack should start practicing aiming his snaps…the defense would never know which way the ball was going and whether they were going to run or pass….

  • REEPJP

Wow, just saw Florio suggested something similar on PFT….forget I ever even posted #1…not a fan of that guy

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udne9JTds5A TS T 2B Cavs Dude

    Who?

  • Lyon

Not exactly sold on him as a QB… but if they think it will work, I’ll have to believe in it for now.

Until Holmgren proves otherwise, I’ll blindly follow.

  • sam

Yay! The answer to our quarterback problems has arrived!

  • abeezy

I’m a hawk fan, just wanna let u browns fans know that you’re getting one hell of a football player in Seneca. He can do it all. He can be a great passer if given enough snaps and u already know he can run.. he can play wr too. I wish the best of luck to Seneca and browns fans..

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udne9JTds5A TS T 2B Cavs Dude

Foolishness, should have picked Troy Smith. Never heard of him, but hey, anyone can play better than Brady Quinn, adn Derek Anderson.

  • abeezy

And holmgren WILL turn your organization around, he took the lowly seahawks from legue worst to a superbowl team.. trust in him, just give him time and patience.

  • Stampy74

Tired of hearing about Troy Smith. If he wasn’t a Buckeye no one would even care.

  • Christopher

    @ Cavs Dude,

I hope I am sensing your sarcasm. Wallace had been a starter for Seattle long before Smith ever wore a Ravens jersey.

And from what I read we gave up a conditional 2011 pick. For that we upgraded our backup QB. Fine with me.

Also Ben Watson to visit Browns offices tomorrow.

  • Stampy74

Wallace has been one of the better backups in the league for years. Stuck behind Hasslebeck in Seattle. His numbers are good for the time he has played. Upgrade over anything we currently have on the roster. Biggest issue is he is 5′ 11″.

  • Stampy74

Wallace will be the starter. Mark it.

  • Gren

@ Sam. He’s not the answer but, he’s certainly a cheaper and (hopefully) more effective backup then D.A.

  • TBrown

I’m a little excited about this. Wallace spent 8 years developing under (mostly) Holmgren’s tutelage, and he was an athletic freak coming out of college. This is the traditional way to get good QBs in the NFL, with a bit of a twist. Instead of developing our own guy, we just trade for the guy that someone else developed.

  • Stampy74

That is unless they bring in someone like McNabb.

  • thebigmack67

I like it…he is better than what played last year.

I really hope we only gave up a mid-round pick for this guy though…

Wonder what Quinn is thinking right now?
    DA IS OUTTA HERE

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udne9JTds5A TS T 2B Cavs Dude

This was a homer pick. Holmgren picked up this guy because of his Seattle ties. How about getting Troy Smith or Tim TeBow? This guy does look big though, but I’ve never heard of em nor have I seen him play.

What do the Browns anticipate doing with Quinn and Anderson bringing Wallace in???

  • s-devo

sick wildcat with him and Cribbs, both have plenty of experience as receivers and qbs, hopefully we get a real qb to play 80% of the snaps

  • TBrown

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wallace ends up as our starter and Holmgren drafts somebody in one of the later rounds to groom. Come to think of it, I guess I also wouldn’t be shocked if Quinn stayed on and Wallace served as the mentor he never had (you know, except for Ken Dorsey).

But if the Browns can get a second or third rounder for Quinn, he’s probably on his way out of town.

  • CBUSDAWG

Tebow? you go to be kidding me. You obviously dont know football since you already stated you dont know who Seneca Wallace is.

  • TBrown

I base these comments on nothing but a hunch, by the way.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Denny

A front office picking a player based on their previous ties?

    Unprecedented.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udne9JTds5A TS T 2B Cavs Dude

Perhaps I don’t know football, I abandoned the Browns at the turn of the century only to jump on the bandwagon when/if they become a winning team that will inevitably fumble on a key drive thus leaving me to wait for next year. But the Cavs just regained the lead!

  • Hot Toluene

Wallace has been the best quarterback on the Seahawks for about 2 years now, but Hasselbeck continues to get the nod from experience / name.

He’s basically Troy Smith but proven able to play at the NFL level (sorry Cavs dude, Troy has not).

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Denny

Matt Bonner is watching this free throw thinking of sandwiches.

  • Bridgecrosser

If this is a 4th plus I am okay with this. There is no way we need all 11 of those picks.

  • jimkanicki

nice to hear from abeezy/hawks fan. reminded me of my own trolling on the phx suns sites letting them know that hickson was more value than they knew.

i was ‘enh’ about this pickup. but you know holmgren knows this guy… and if the fans like him… and it’s a low pick we’re giving up… small salary cap hit… what’s the downside?

  • Stampy74

Trade is for a conditional 2011 draft pick.

Wallace will start unless someone else is added. He played many years for Holmgren and knows the system. He has shown success in the NFL.

You heard it from the Walrus himself. The QB position has to improve. Quinn nor Anderson will start, and one or both will be gone.

  • ben

Gaaaawd this guy is terrible to…

  • stin4u

Consider me slightly optimistic/excited. Sure the name doesn’t light the world on fire, but I agree that this guy has been pretty darn good when he’s played. And Seattle never had a great core of receivers either so….good pickup.

  • Nick

Those who aren’t familiar with Wallace aren’t watching football past 3:30pm on Sundays. Seneca is a solid QB, with proven stats when the situation calls for him. We don’t know what he’s capable of as a starter, same as BQ, unless we give him the reigns from the get-go.

  • mydogsnameisbuckeye

    @28
“Trade is for a conditional 2011 draft pick.

Wallace will start unless someone else is added.”

That’s what I thought as soon as I heard it was conditional because doesn’t a conditional draft pick mean its based off performance? I assume Seattle would want him to start, and I’m sure with the past relationship between MH and Wallace, it would definitely mean he is a starter.

I’m in agreeance with the Cribbs/Wallace comments… Backfield would be ill with those two running around, can’t wait to see what they come up with…

  • AMC

We got this guy for nearly nothing, so I’ve got an open mind. He’s shown some flashes of good play, but I’m not sure he’s a long term answer at QB. Leads me to believe that Holmgren will draft a QB late and try to groom him and use Wallace as the starter because he’s familiar with the West Coast offense.

  • bobby

Wallace is definitely an upgrade from what we have.
ATT COMP YARDS COMP% TD INT
    15 23 127 65.2 1 1 (@SF)
    26 44 261 59.1 1 1 (Chi)
    33 45 257 73.3 1 0 (@Indy)

These are his stats with Seattle in 3 games. Im guessing the 1st one is where Hasselbeck went down, and by game 3 he looked to be in a good rhythm. I agree with Stampy, Wallace will start next year. I fully expect DA and Quinn to be traded (possibly DA cut). Either another QB that is young (1 or 2 years in) will be traded for as a successor or they will draft a QB (Lefevour?) to take over in 2 or 3 years.

  • bobby

btw- those were 3 games in a row and the only real significant playing time last year.

Also- not just Wallace and Cribbs… but lets add Harrison to that mix too. you have 3 good/great athletes in your back field. im excited for the possibilities. im guessing at most the conidtional pick will be a 2/3. If he turns out to be a solid starter that is. and Im good with that if he performs.

  • stin4u

As much as I have supported BQ up to this point….does this mean we’re gonna see a trade? Possibly a draft day chip to move up a round to draft another QB?

  • Jake In Ohio City (Natty The Dog)

Great……another “cheap” route for quarterback. This should end up a lot like Anderson, Quinn, Frye, Dilfer…..and whoever else the roster of QB Busts have been for the past 11 years of Browns football.

Seneca is a great backup…..now Homgren needs to go out and get our starter…who is that gonna be? Because Wallace is not a starter in this league.

I will say, if you play Madden, Wallace is a great QB to use if you don’t make your own because of his speed. He’ll be hurt within the first 5 games if he is a runner.

  • stin4u

    madden….*face in palm*

  • CBUSDAWG

Tony Pike with one of our 2 third rounders. Not that I like it at all, but i think its happening. Seems like another DA to me. I think this pick up is just finding a back up with a chance at catching lighting in a bottle.

  • Team Brady

you all know how I feel about this…

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com Denny

Tony Pike is like 3000x better than DA because his arms are made of metal.

If you’ve ever seen any of the Terminator films (FILMS!), you know cyborgs are better than humans at things.

  • stin4u

I would be shocked if Ben Watson left Cleveland without a contract…..

  • http://gravatar.com PayDaMan

    @42
So would I and that gets me very excited

  • CBUSDAWG

Besides showing emotion and crying which seems to be a trate needed too be a Browns quaterback. So we cant have a Cyborg sorry.

  • Ike

Seneca Wallace will not be the end result at QB of where the Browns ultimately want to be, but he is a conspicously better QB than anyone on the Browns roster and will likely be the best Browns starting QB since Jeff Garcia, at least.

Again, not a homerun but a solid signing nonetheless. I love it as a short term solution.

  • jo

Wallace is a good pickup. 60% cant be agrued with. Better than Quinn and definitely DA, but i still hope we pick someone up, even in the draft.

Browns are turning around right before our eyes though regardless!

  • bobby

I dont want the browns to touch Pike with a 50 foot pole. The guy is a stick. 1 NFL hit and hes done. I also do not think he has good strength or accuracy. Collaros was much better when starting for UC. Wallace is not the end all.. but he should be the starter here for 2 years would be my guess to buy time until a rookie this year can take over.

Agreed with the Watson statement too. I would love to see the browns add him, then cut that gawd awful FA they signed last year (aka Robert “stone hands” Royal).

  • Scott #2

Anyone besides me hoping we take Dan LeFevour? I really like what the brass is doing so far!

  • Tim

    Yay! No Tebow!

  • 5haun

Alright, seriously! I’m beginning to think that Holmgren has been watching me play Madden all of these years. The first thing I would do was trade a pick for Seneca (he’s the poor man’s version of Vick in that game) then get Ben Watson (cheaper cersion of K2). I’d build my team around those guys and a good D and get a dynasty. Now I’m not saying this is going to turn us into contenders, but if we do impove, I want a check!
