Cavz vs. Kings Preview – Welcome Home Z Day!

The Cavaliers (CAVZ!!!) take on the Sacramento Kings this afternoon (3 PM, FSOhio, WTAM 1100) to start a three-game home stretch over the next six days. The main story of the game is the return of Cavz center Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the Z (The Z!!!) after his trade to the Washington Wizards before the trade deadline, followed by his subsequent buyout.

While Z has played in two games since his return to the Cavz, both games were on the road. There has been an ongoing debate to the method in which the Cavz will play Z in his first game back in front of the home crowd that influenced his return. The game plan according to the team has been to bring Ilgauskas off the bench towards the end of the first quarter. While starting Z would be a nice gesture, the argument has been that bringing him off the bench will allow the fans to focus on him as he enters the game. With Andy Varejao out with a hamstring injury, Ilgauskas will still likely come off the bench.

The Kings come in to this game on a three-game losing streak, and are 3-7 in their last 10 games. The Kings also are 7-30 on the road. In addition to not being all that good, the Kings are without rookie guard Tyreke “The Freak” Evans, who is out with a concussion.

On paper, this game shouldn’t be much, if any, of a challenge for the Cavz. The Kings are not a particularly strong road team, are without one of their best players, and will be playing in a rowdier than normal arena.

Welcome back, Z. The team is setting up numerous video and signage tributes to the big man. If any of you are at the game and get good photos, send them our way at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

This time, Brown really had better not screw things up.
This game should not be very competitive; more of an exhibition game, really. And it should sink our magic number for number one seed in the East to three, pending the result of the Orlando-Denver game, which could then reduce it to two. But that’s getting ahead of the day’s immediate festivities…

  • typo

Wouldn’t it be something if brown didn’t play him? On some level it might be funny

  • JNeids

I didn’t love but didn’t hate those intros (Zo Gotti, Antawn Zamison, etc.). But I don’t know how I feel about them introducing him after the starting 5. Wondering if they shoulda just waited till he checked in for the first time…

  • JNeids

Zo Gotti just passed up a WIIIIIIIDE open 3. Makes me wonder about his confidence.

I’m usually not a hater, but I nominate this game as THE MOST boring game in Cavalier history. Letting them hang around, sloppy turn overs, missed offensive opportunities. BORRRRING.

Cavs hurt without Andy. So many missed offensive boards that would have resulted in 2nd chance points.

  • Jeff

    True.

Mo has pretty much played himself out of the game; but West, despite scoring only 4 points, is keeping up the pressure on the Kings and Jamison has put in 20+ to complement LeBron’s scoring.

  • Justin

I think the WFNY crowd is falling in line with the cavs… Lack of enthusiasm on the last few open threads. I think everyone is ready for the post season to start already.

This is becoming a tired refrain after only one and a half games, but the Cavs sorely need Anderson Varejao. Despite the typical sub-par defense against the lesser team, it was fun to watch Jamison do his thing alongside LeBron. And it was good to see Powe out there for 22 minutes, although he didn’t have as big of an impact as he has had in recent games.

I think Brown is aiming for the No. 1 seeds. He put only 8 players on the floor.

Magic numbers update: East (3; stay tuned for Orlando), Overall (6).

Someone help Mo Williams find his game please. Beno Udrih sure looked good. I know one thing Danny Ferry is sure glad he went out and got Antawn Jamison.

  • MattC

Mo is just not that good of a basketball player. That’s all there is to it.

At this point, and good lord I never thought I’d be saying this, but give me Boobie any day over Mo.

Don’t jump off the ledge folks. This was more of an aberration for Mo’s defense than the recent norm.

In his first six games off the injured list, yes his defense was horrible. Starting PG’s averaged 19.5 pts, 7.2 assists and 49.5% shooting here.

However, in the most recent 13 games for the Cavs, starting PG’s averaged only 11.8 pts and 5.6 assists with 38.4% shooting against Cavs.

For the season, according to 82games.com, all PG’s have 19.0 pts and 7.7 asts per 48 mins v Cavs. Adjusting per only the normal 36 minutes of a starter, that means 14.3 pts and 5.8 asts.

Jacob: an always welcome statistical reminder. Expectations for Mo do run very high after we’ve relied on him for so long to be our second scoring threat. I say, if he is comfortable finding Jamison, as he has done consistently of late, then let Jamison put in the points. We can’t expect LeBron, Jamison, and Mo to dump in 20 points each every night. Moreover, the Mo-to-Jamison feed is still a work-in-progress, and there’s still plenty of time for those two to gel. There’s also time for Mo to get his mojo back, and Windy’s argument is that the Cavs need to design plays to free up Mo more often so that Mo can regain his confidence (assuming that his confidence is truly missing). The problem with Windy’s argument is that Mo is and will remain a streaky shooter. Even if he looks as confidant as ever in the next 6 to 8 games, we don’t know what we’ll get from him come playoff time. It would help, I think everyone would agree, if Mo created for himself more and remained a constant threat from deep; he took only two three-point shots in this one while dishing out 7 assists.

Correction: our magic number for overall number one seed ticked down as well, to 5.

    But… but…. Mo is an All-Star*!

    * Just like Derek Anderson was in the Pro Bowl

  • oribiasi

    Denny, that’s not fair/holy.

@16 Fair is debatable but the truth is not, unfortunately.
