NFL Trade Rumors: Browns Shopping Quinn?
March 10, 2010Cleveland Indians News Roundup: Jordan Brown’s Surgery, 40 Man Roster, Lineups, and Kerry Wood Trade Rumors
March 10, 2010Just as it is with NBA Trade Rumor season, so to is NFL Draft Rumor season one of those things you either like or loathe. I personally love everything about the NFL draft because to me it represents unlimited possibilities. There’s nothing but hope and ambition in the air when I read about prospects, mock drafts, etc.
In the latest mock draft by Pat Kirwan for NFL.com, he has our beloved Cleveland Browns taking Tennessee safety Eric Berry with the #7 pick. Seeing as how that’s the guy I have wanted since day one, this is obviously pleasantly exciting to see. But how does it compare to some other notable mock drafts? Let’s take a look around the web and see, shall we?
We’ll start right here with Kirwan and his comments:
7. Cleveland Browns
Eric Berry, S, TennesseeWhen Joe Haden ran slow at the combine, it made this decision an easy one. Berry can play all four secondary spots and some teams have him graded as a top-five pick. A 4.4 in the 40 with a 43-inch vertical and close to 11 feet in the broad jump tells you the kind of athlete Berry is.
Next up, Don Banks for SI.com also has Eric Berry sliding past Tampa at #3, but he has Scott Pioli snagging him for the Chiefs at #5, which leaves the Browns to take Joe Haden at #7:
What a difference a week can make. I went from thinking the Browns had two good choices here between Haden and Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant, and now both of those players have some red flags coming out of Indy. Haden needed to run well to secure his spot in the top 10 and he didn’t, posting 4.57 and 4.58, which looks slow for an elite cornerback. But I’m not going to throw the baby out with the bath water just yet. Haden has time to recover his mojo with a strong pro day workout, and we’re going to fight through the urge to over-react. At least this once.
Moving on to ESPN.com and their “draft experts” Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. Again, both guys agree that Berry will fall past Tampa as long as St Louis takes Bradford #1, but they also both say there’s no way Kansas City lets Berry fall past #5. Bullocks. So who does that leave for Cleveland? McShay sticks to the chalk and picks Joe Haden, but Kiper goes against the grain and picks Jason Pierre-Paul:
CLEVELAND BROWNS
Mel Kiper: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE South Florida
Kiper’s Comment: Pierre-Paul has the chance to be a dynamic star in the NFL if he continues to develop, and he would be a dangerous pass-rusher as he is now. With off-the-charts physical skills for his size, he’s an exciting talent. I said before that he could be the Mario Williams of this draft, and I maintain that thought.
Todd McShay: Joe Haden, CB Florida
Todd’s Take: Haden ran surprisingly slow 40-yard dashes at the combine, but we cannot find any issues with his playing speed on tape. Cleveland could opt for top WR Dez Bryant here, but from a positional value standpoint, we believe the team is better off spending top-seven money on a cornerback.
Finally, we look at Doug Farrar’s mock draft he did for Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner blog. Doug was the only one to resist the urge to buy into St Louis’s overtures regarding Sam Bradford. Instead, he has the Rams sticking with the consensus best player in the draft in Ndamukong Suh, which leaves the Buccaneers to take Eric Berry third. Once again, that leaves the Browns to take Joe Haden:
7. Cleveland Browns: CB Joe Haden, Florida — The slow times at the Combine were cause for concern, but Cleveland’s new front office will go to the film and see the real Haden In coverage.
So, in general, the consensus seems to be that most people doubt Eric Berry can really fall to #7. Even if he gets past Tampa, the belief is that Kansas City will grab him up at #5. I’m personally not concerned about Haden’s 40 time in the combine at all. I’m much more concerned about his technique in coverage, and by all accounts his technique is stellar. There’s no question the Browns need a legit #1 CB, and if they can take care of that at #7, I’m all for it. Unless Eric Berry is sitting there.

Be careful what you wish for. Berry has a monster ego and tremendous jerk potential (see Edwards, B).
As for Pierre-Paul, you can’t be serious. That’s a badminton or synchronized swimming name. I don’t want no Pierre-Pauls in my trenches.
CBS sportsline has us taking Berry. Bradford going 1st
let’s keep the Berry hope alive:

@ Mr. C – I think this team could kinda use a defensive player with an “attitude.” You know maybe like.. Ray Lewis?
I’m fine with attitude, as long as he performs. Think of alot of the great D players. They have ego and attitude. Ray Lewis, Reed, Porter, Revis. Gotta have a little swagger
People make too much about 40 times, sure it’s great having a guy who’s lightening quick, but if he can’t play then the speed is all for nothing. Haden may not be able to run a 4.2-4.3, but that didn’t seem to stop him from being a dominate 3 year starter in the S.E.C. I’m still holding out hope for Berry, but if he’s not there, I want to go Haden because the dude can play.
Does anyone know if there is website or petition against the Browns drafting Jimmy Clausen because I would like to join it. ASAP
Hmmmmm…. Pierre-Paul sounds a little French. Does this mean he’ll be wearing an orange ascot on gameday if we draft him?
You have to have an ego at any defensive position. If you have any doubt in your abilities, you will get burnt, constantly. Gotta love Mel Kiper’s horrible picks for his mock drafts. Whenever he says someone has superstar talent, he’s easily a bust.
I know that some of the greats have some ego and it isn’t necessarily bad, but the late, unlamented Shaun Smith had ego too, and he never shut up and punched out his own QB.
Just sayin’.
I’m convinced that Kiper and McShay do so many different versions of their mocks so that when the draft actually takes place they can say “I called that correctly in my Mock Draft Version X.0”
@BP – if so, then he can hang out with Mr. Lerner after games or perhaps travel with him to see EPL action on the bye week.
JPP is a little too risky for me at this point in my Browns fandom. Berry would be amazing at #7, but I don’t see ANY way he actually falls that far. That guy is a beast. Haden would still be tremendous at #7 though. 40’s are overrated and the track in Indy is very slow. He can run a 4.4 in Indy and all will be good again.
I’d rather have them take Okung or Early Thomas at #7 than JPP. There is going to be good value in the 2nd round at S and CB, so what ever we don’t get in the 1st can be filled in the2nd hopefully.
@MrCleveland: I don’t know if you’ve ever spent time around any college or pro athletes. But, let me tell you, they ALL have huge ego’s. No matter how good they are. Doesn’t mean they can’t be nice people or anything, but most have been babied and had their butts kissed their entire lives. They aren’t used to being humble. Just saying.
With the Williams trade to Detroit, the chances of getting Berry are around 50%. Last week it was around 10%. It looks more and more that the Browns will make a move for a starting QB. How does Quinn and Rogers for the first pick in the draft sound? I don’t care either way.
Eric Berry and Shaun Smith, yea I can see that comparison. Next! Berry at #7 would be a sensational choice but wait until the next mock draft that comes out in an hour to see what someone else thinks.
@paulbip = Browns need more then a #1 they need at least five #1s and they certainly don’t need another rookie QB. They cut Anderson and traded for Wallace I can’t imagine more happening at the dysfunctional position of quarterback.
@8 I agree completely, you have to have an attitude on defense, especially in the AFC North. There may be some concern, what with Mangini’s ‘magic formula’ and all… but as long as the attitude doesn’t disrupt the rest of the team I can’t see a problem.
Bullocks? As in J’Nathan?
Please God let Berry fall to us. We need teams to fear us once again.
This is the first year since 99 where I dont like anyone in the top half of the 1st rd BUT Berry. I say if he’s gone by #7 lets just trade down and stockpile 2nd rd picks or something to that effect.
If Berry doesn’t fall to us we’re moving down, period. Even if he does move to us, we’re moving down. Mangini loves moving down AND Holmgren loves moving down. We move down, and maybe down again until we have 22 picks in this draft, enough for an entire squad…and eventually take the Missouri Tiger or Michigan Wolverine…
@paulbip, it sounds awful. 1st, it sounds impossible. 2nd, how on earth does it make sense to move up 6 spots when there isn’t a clear drop-off in talent from a singular player to all the others? There’s no Peyton Manning in this draft – and even when there is a consensus difference-maker projected at no. 1 overall, Reggie Bush and Jamarcus Russell would like to discuss how well that’s worked out for their teams.
It must be nice to do mock drafts all day. Even by hacks like Kiper.
Only way we get Berry is if Rams take Bradford #1.
